¹And Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah spake unto all the people, saying,

¹Schephathia, fils de Matthan, Guedalia, fils de Paschhur, Jucal, fils de Schélémia, et Paschhur, fils de Malkija, entendirent les paroles que Jérémie adressait à tout le peuple, en disant:

¹וישמע שפטיה בן מתן וגדליהו בן פשחור ויוכל בן שלמיהו ופשחור בן מלכיה את הדברים אשר ירמיהו מדבר אל כל העם לאמר׃

²Thus saith Jehovah, He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey, and he shall live.

²Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Celui qui restera dans cette ville mourra par l'épée, par la famine ou par la peste; mais celui qui sortira pour se rendre aux Chaldéens, aura la vie sauve, sa vie sera son butin, et il vivra.

²כה אמר יהוה הישב בעיר הזאת ימות בחרב ברעב ובדבר והיצא אל הכשדים יחיה והיתה לו נפשו לשלל וחי׃

³Thus saith Jehovah, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it.

³Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Cette ville sera livrée à l'armée du roi de Babylone, qui la prendra.

³כה אמר יהוה הנתן תנתן העיר הזאת ביד חיל מלך בבל ולכדה׃

⁴Then the princes said unto the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death; forasmuch as he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

⁴Et les chefs dirent au roi: Que cet homme soit mis à mort! car il décourage les hommes de guerre qui restent dans cette ville, et tout le peuple, en leur tenant de pareils discours; cet homme ne cherche pas le bien de ce peuple, il ne veut que son malheur.

⁴ויאמרו השרים אל המלך יומת נא את האיש הזה כי על כן הוא מרפא את ידי אנשי המלחמה הנשארים בעיר הזאת ואת ידי כל העם לדבר אליהם כדברים האלה כי האיש הזה איננו דרש לשלום לעם הזה כי אם לרעה׃

⁵And Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he that can do anything against you.

⁵Le roi Sédécias répondit: Voici, il est entre vos mains; car le roi ne peut rien contre vous.

⁵ויאמר המלך צדקיהו הנה הוא בידכם כי אין המלך יוכל אתכם דבר׃

⁶Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

⁶Alors ils prirent Jérémie, et le jetèrent dans la citerne de Malkija, fils du roi, laquelle se trouvait dans la cour de la prison; ils descendirent Jérémie avec des cordes. Il n'y avait point d'eau dans la citerne, mais il y avait de la boue; et Jérémie enfonça dans la boue.

⁶ויקחו את ירמיהו וישלכו אתו אל הבור מלכיהו בן המלך אשר בחצר המטרה וישלחו את ירמיהו בחבלים ובבור אין מים כי אם טיט ויטבע ירמיהו בטיט׃

⁷Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin,)

⁷Ebed-Mélec, l'Ethiopien, eunuque qui était dans la maison du roi, apprit qu'on avait mis Jérémie dans la citerne. Le roi était assis à la porte de Benjamin.

⁷וישמע עבד מלך הכושי איש סריס והוא בבית המלך כי נתנו את ירמיהו אל הבור והמלך יושב בשער בנימן׃

⁸Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king, saying,

⁸Ebed-Mélec sortit de la maison du roi, et parla ainsi au roi:

⁸ויצא עבד מלך מבית המלך וידבר אל המלך לאמר׃

⁹My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city.

⁹O roi, mon seigneur, ces hommes ont mal agi en traitant de la sorte Jérémie, le prophète, en le jetant dans la citerne; il mourra de faim là où il est, car il n'y a plus de pain dans la ville.

⁹אדני המלך הרעו האנשים האלה את כל אשר עשו לירמיהו הנביא את אשר השליכו אל הבור וימת תחתיו מפני הרעב כי אין הלחם עוד בעיר׃

¹⁰Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

¹⁰Le roi donna cet ordre à Ebed-Mélec, l'Ethiopien: Prends ici trente hommes avec toi, et tu retireras de la citerne Jérémie, le prophète, avant qu'il ne meure.

¹⁰ויצוה המלך את עבד מלך הכושי לאמר קח בידך מזה שלשים אנשים והעלית את ירמיהו הנביא מן הבור בטרם ימות׃

¹¹So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

¹¹Ebed-Mélec prit avec lui les hommes, et se rendit à la maison du roi, dans un lieu au-dessous du trésor; il en sortit des lambeaux usés et de vieux haillons, et les descendit à Jérémie dans la citerne, avec des cordes.

¹¹ויקח עבד מלך את האנשים בידו ויבא בית המלך אל תחת האוצר ויקח משם בלוי הסחבות ובלוי מלחים וישלחם אל ירמיהו אל הבור בחבלים׃

¹²And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn-out garments under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

¹²Ebed-Mélec, l'Ethiopien, dit à Jérémie: Mets ces lambeaux usés et ces haillons sous tes aisselles, sous les cordes. Et Jérémie fit ainsi.

¹²ויאמר עבד מלך הכושי אל ירמיהו שים נא בלואי הסחבות והמלחים תחת אצלות ידיך מתחת לחבלים ויעש ירמיהו כן׃

¹³So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

¹³Ils tirèrent Jérémie avec les cordes, et le firent monter hors de la citerne. Jérémie resta dans la cour de la prison.

¹³וימשכו את ירמיהו בחבלים ויעלו אתו מן הבור וישב ירמיהו בחצר המטרה׃

¹⁴Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of Jehovah: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.

¹⁴Le roi Sédécias envoya chercher Jérémie, le prophète, et le fit venir auprès de lui dans la troisième entrée de la maison de l'Eternel. Et le roi dit à Jérémie: J'ai une chose à te demander; ne me cache rien.

¹⁴וישלח המלך צדקיהו ויקח את ירמיהו הנביא אליו אל מבוא השלישי אשר בבית יהוה ויאמר המלך אל ירמיהו שאל אני אתך דבר אל תכחד ממני דבר׃

¹⁵Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, thou wilt not hearken unto me.

¹⁵Jérémie répondit à Sédécias: Si je te la dis, ne me feras-tu pas mourir? Et si je te donne un conseil, tu ne m'écouteras pas.

¹⁵ויאמר ירמיהו אל צדקיהו כי אגיד לך הלוא המת תמיתני וכי איעצך לא תשמע אלי׃

¹⁶So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As Jehovah liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

¹⁶Le roi Sédécias jura secrètement à Jérémie, en disant: L'Eternel est vivant, lui qui nous a donné la vie! je ne te ferai pas mourir, et je ne te livrerai pas entre les mains de ces hommes qui en veulent à ta vie.

¹⁶וישבע המלך צדקיהו אל ירמיהו בסתר לאמר חי יהוה את אשר עשה לנו את הנפש הזאת אם אמיתך ואם אתנך ביד האנשים האלה אשר מבקשים את נפשך׃

¹⁷Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If thou wilt go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thy house.

¹⁷Jérémie dit alors à Sédécias: Ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: Si tu vas te rendre aux chefs du roi de Babylone, tu auras la vie sauve, et cette ville ne sera pas brûlée par le feu; tu vivras, toi et ta maison.

¹⁷ויאמר ירמיהו אל צדקיהו כה אמר יהוה אלהי צבאות אלהי ישראל אם יצא תצא אל שרי מלך בבל וחיתה נפשך והעיר הזאת לא תשרף באש וחיתה אתה וביתך׃

¹⁸But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

¹⁸Mais si tu ne te rends pas aux chefs du roi de Babylone, cette ville sera livrée entre les mains des Chaldéens, qui la brûleront par le feu; et toi, tu n'échapperas pas à leurs mains.

¹⁸ואם לא תצא אל שרי מלך בבל ונתנה העיר הזאת ביד הכשדים ושרפוה באש ואתה לא תמלט מידם׃

¹⁹And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

¹⁹Le roi Sédécias dit à Jérémie: Je crains les Juifs qui ont passé aux Chaldéens; je crains qu'on ne me livre entre leurs mains, et qu'ils ne m'outragent.

¹⁹ויאמר המלך צדקיהו אל ירמיהו אני דאג את היהודים אשר נפלו אל הכשדים פן יתנו אתי בידם והתעללו בי׃

²⁰But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of Jehovah, in that which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well with thee, and thy soul shall live.

²⁰Jérémie répondit: On ne te livrera pas. Ecoute la voix de l'Eternel dans ce que je te dis; tu t'en trouveras bien, et tu auras la vie sauve.

²⁰ויאמר ירמיהו לא יתנו שמע נא בקול יהוה לאשר אני דבר אליך וייטב לך ותחי נפשך׃

²¹But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that Jehovah hath showed me:

²¹Mais si tu refuses de sortir, voici ce que l'Eternel m'a révélé:

²¹ואם מאן אתה לצאת זה הדבר אשר הראני יהוה׃

²²behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Thy familiar friends have set thee on, and have prevailed over thee: [now that] thy feet are sunk in the mire, they are turned away back.

²²Toutes les femmes qui restent dans la maison du roi de Juda seront menées aux chefs du roi de Babylone, et elles diront: Tu as été trompé, dominé, par ceux qui t'annonçaient la paix; et quand tes pieds sont enfoncés dans la boue, ils se retirent.

²²והנה כל הנשים אשר נשארו בבית מלך יהודה מוצאות אל שרי מלך בבל והנה אמרות הסיתוך ויכלו לך אנשי שלמך הטבעו בבץ רגלך נסגו אחור׃

²³And they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans; and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

²³Toutes tes femmes et tes enfants seront menés aux Chaldéens; et toi, tu n'échapperas pas à leurs mains, tu seras saisi par la main du roi de Babylone, et cette ville sera brûlée par le feu.

²³ואת כל נשיך ואת בניך מוצאים אל הכשדים ואתה לא תמלט מידם כי ביד מלך בבל תתפש ואת העיר הזאת תשרף באש׃

²⁴Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

²⁴Sédécias dit à Jérémie: Que personne ne sache rien de ces discours, et tu ne mourras pas.

²⁴ויאמר צדקיהו אל ירמיהו איש אל ידע בדברים האלה ולא תמות׃

²⁵But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king; hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:

²⁵Si les chefs apprennent que je t'ai parlé, et s'ils viennent te dire: Rapporte-nous ce que tu as dit au roi, et ce que le roi t'a dit, ne nous cache rien, et nous ne te ferons pas mourir, -

²⁵וכי ישמעו השרים כי דברתי אתך ובאו אליך ואמרו אליך הגידה נא לנו מה דברת אל המלך אל תכחד ממנו ולא נמיתך ומה דבר אליך המלך׃

²⁶then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.

²⁶tu leur répondras: J'ai supplié le roi de ne pas me renvoyer dans la maison de Jonathan, de peur que je n'y meure.

²⁶ואמרת אליהם מפיל אני תחנתי לפני המלך לבלתי השיבני בית יהונתן למות שם׃

²⁷Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

²⁷Tous les chefs vinrent auprès de Jérémie et le questionnèrent. Il leur répondit entièrement comme le roi l'avait ordonné. Ils gardèrent alors le silence et se retirèrent, car la chose ne s'était pas répandue.

²⁷ויבאו כל השרים אל ירמיהו וישאלו אתו ויגד להם ככל הדברים האלה אשר צוה המלך ויחרשו ממנו כי לא נשמע הדבר׃

²⁸So Jeremiah abode in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

²⁸Jérémie resta dans la cour de la prison jusqu'au jour de la prise de Jérusalem. Lorsque Jérusalem fut prise, -

²⁸וישב ירמיהו בחצר המטרה עד יום אשר נלכדה ירושלם והיה כאשר נלכדה ירושלם׃
