¹There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.

¹Il y avait dans le pays d'Uts un homme qui s'appelait Job. Et cet homme était intègre et droit; il craignait Dieu, et se détournait du mal.

¹איש היה בארץ עוץ איוב שמו והיה האיש ההוא תם וישר וירא אלהים וסר מרע׃

²And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

²Il lui naquit sept fils et trois filles.

²ויולדו לו שבעה בנים ושלוש בנות׃

³His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

³Il possédait sept mille brebis, trois mille chameaux, cinq cents paires de boeufs, cinq cents ânesses, et un très grand nombre de serviteurs. Et cet homme était le plus considérable de tous les fils de l'Orient.

³ויהי מקנהו שבעת אלפי צאן ושלשת אלפי גמלים וחמש מאות צמד בקר וחמש מאות אתונות ועבדה רבה מאד ויהי האיש ההוא גדול מכל בני קדם׃

⁴And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

⁴Ses fils allaient les uns chez les autres et donnaient tour à tour un festin, et ils invitaient leurs trois soeurs à manger et à boire avec eux.

⁴והלכו בניו ועשו משתה בית איש יומו ושלחו וקראו לשלשת אחיתיהם לאכל ולשתות עמהם׃

⁵And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

⁵Et quand les jours de festin étaient passés, Job appelait et sanctifiait ses fils, puis il se levait de bon matin et offrait pour chacun d'eux un holocauste; car Job disait: Peut-être mes fils ont-ils péché et ont-ils offensé Dieu dans leur coeur. C'est ainsi que Job avait coutume d'agir.

⁵ויהי כי הקיפו ימי המשתה וישלח איוב ויקדשם והשכים בבקר והעלה עלות מספר כלם כי אמר איוב אולי חטאו בני וברכו אלהים בלבבם ככה יעשה איוב כל הימים׃

⁶Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.

⁶Or, les fils de Dieu vinrent un jour se présenter devant l'Eternel, et Satan vint aussi au milieu d'eux.

⁶ויהי היום ויבאו בני האלהים להתיצב על יהוה ויבוא גם השטן בתוכם׃

⁷And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

⁷L'Eternel dit à Satan: D'où viens-tu? Et Satan répondit à l'Eternel: De parcourir la terre et de m'y promener.

⁷ויאמר יהוה אל השטן מאין תבא ויען השטן את יהוה ויאמר משוט בארץ ומהתהלך בה׃

⁸And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.

⁸L'Eternel dit à Satan: As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job? Il n'y a personne comme lui sur la terre; c'est un homme intègre et droit, craignant Dieu, et se détournant du mal.

⁸ויאמר יהוה אל השטן השמת לבך על עבדי איוב כי אין כמהו בארץ איש תם וישר ירא אלהים וסר מרע׃

⁹Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

⁹Et Satan répondit à l'Eternel: Est-ce d'une manière désintéressée que Job craint Dieu?

⁹ויען השטן את יהוה ויאמר החנם ירא איוב אלהים׃

¹⁰Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

¹⁰Ne l'as-tu pas protégé, lui, sa maison, et tout ce qui est à lui? Tu as béni l'oeuvre de ses mains, et ses troupeaux couvrent le pays.

¹⁰הלא את שכת בעדו ובעד ביתו ובעד כל אשר לו מסביב מעשה ידיו ברכת ומקנהו פרץ בארץ׃

¹¹But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

¹¹Mais étends ta main, touche à tout ce qui lui appartient, et je suis sûr qu'il te maudit en face.

¹¹ואולם שלח נא ידך וגע בכל אשר לו אם לא על פניך יברכך׃

¹²And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.

¹²L'Eternel dit à Satan: Voici, tout ce qui lui appartient, je te le livre; seulement, ne porte pas la main sur lui. Et Satan se retira de devant la face de l'Eternel.

¹²ויאמר יהוה אל השטן הנה כל אשר לו בידך רק אליו אל תשלח ידך ויצא השטן מעם פני יהוה׃

¹³And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,

¹³Un jour que les fils et les filles de Job mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné,

¹³ויהי היום ובניו ובנתיו אכלים ושתים יין בבית אחיהם הבכור׃

¹⁴that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;

¹⁴il arriva auprès de Job un messager qui dit: Les boeufs labouraient et les ânesses paissaient à côté d'eux;

¹⁴ומלאך בא אל איוב ויאמר הבקר היו חרשות והאתנות רעות על ידיהם׃

¹⁵and the Sabeans fell [upon them], and took them away: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁵des Sabéens se sont jetés dessus, les ont enlevés, et ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée. Et je me suis échappé moi seul, pour t'en apporter la nouvelle.

¹⁵ותפל שבא ותקחם ואת הנערים הכו לפי חרב ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך׃

¹⁶While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁶Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit: Le feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel, a embrasé les brebis et les serviteurs, et les a consumés. Et je me suis échappé moi seul, pour t'en apporter la nouvelle.

¹⁶עוד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר אש אלהים נפלה מן השמים ותבער בצאן ובנערים ותאכלם ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך׃

¹⁷While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁷Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit: Des Chaldéens, formés en trois bandes, se sont jetés sur les chameaux, les ont enlevés, et ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée. Et je me suis échappé moi seul, pour t'en apporter la nouvelle.

¹⁷עוד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר כשדים שמו שלשה ראשים ויפשטו על הגמלים ויקחום ואת הנערים הכו לפי חרב ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך׃

¹⁸While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;

¹⁸Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit: Tes fils et tes filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné;

¹⁸עד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר בניך ובנותיך אכלים ושתים יין בבית אחיהם הבכור׃

¹⁹and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁹et voici, un grand vent est venu de l'autre côté du désert, et a frappé contre les quatre coins de la maison; elle s'est écroulée sur les jeunes gens, et ils sont morts. Et je me suis échappé moi seul, pour t'en apporter la nouvelle.

¹⁹והנה רוח גדולה באה מעבר המדבר ויגע בארבע פנות הבית ויפל על הנערים וימותו ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך׃

²⁰Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;

²⁰Alors Job se leva, déchira son manteau, et se rasa la tête; puis, se jetant par terre, il se prosterna,

²⁰ויקם איוב ויקרע את מעלו ויגז את ראשו ויפל ארצה וישתחו׃

²¹and he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.

²¹et dit: Je suis sorti nu du sein de ma mère, et nu je retournerai dans le sein de la terre. L'Eternel a donné, et l'Eternel a ôté; que le nom de l'Eternel soit béni!

²¹ויאמר ערם יצתי מבטן אמי וערם אשוב שמה יהוה נתן ויהוה לקח יהי שם יהוה מברך׃

²²In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

²²En tout cela, Job ne pécha point et n'attribua rien d'injuste à Dieu.

²²בכל זאת לא חטא איוב ולא נתן תפלה לאלהים׃
