¹After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

¹Après cela, Job ouvrit la bouche et maudit le jour de sa naissance.

¹אחרי כן פתח איוב את פיהו ויקלל את יומו׃

²And Job answered and said:

²Il prit la parole et dit:

²ויען איוב ויאמר׃

³Let the day perish wherein I was born, And the night which said, There is a man-child conceived.

³Périsse le jour où je suis né, Et la nuit qui dit: Un enfant mâle est conçu!

³יאבד יום אולד בו והלילה אמר הרה גבר׃

⁴Let that day be darkness; Let not God from above seek for it, Neither let the light shine upon it.

⁴Ce jour! qu'il se change en ténèbres, Que Dieu n'en ait point souci dans le ciel, Et que la lumière ne rayonne plus sur lui!

⁴היום ההוא יהי חשך אל ידרשהו אלוה ממעל ואל תופע עליו נהרה׃

⁵Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own; Let a cloud dwell upon it; Let all that maketh black the day terrify it.

⁵Que l'obscurité et l'ombre de la mort s'en emparent, Que des nuées établissent leur demeure au-dessus de lui, Et que de noirs phénomènes l'épouvantent!

⁵יגאלהו חשך וצלמות תשכן עליו עננה יבעתהו כמרירי יום׃

⁶As for that night, let thick darkness seize upon it: Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; Let it not come into the number of the months.

⁶Cette nuit! que les ténèbres en fassent leur proie, Qu'elle disparaisse de l'année, Qu'elle ne soit plus comptée parmi les mois!

⁶הלילה ההוא יקחהו אפל אל יחד בימי שנה במספר ירחים אל יבא׃

⁷Lo, let that night be barren; Let no joyful voice come therein.

⁷Que cette nuit devienne stérile, Que l'allégresse en soit bannie!

⁷הנה הלילה ההוא יהי גלמוד אל תבא רננה בו׃

⁸Let them curse it that curse the day, Who are ready to rouse up leviathan.

⁸Qu'elle soit maudite par ceux qui maudissent les jours, Par ceux qui savent exciter le léviathan!

⁸יקבהו אררי יום העתידים ערר לויתן׃

⁹Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark: Let it look for light, but have none; Neither let it behold the eyelids of the morning:

⁹Que les étoiles de son crépuscule s'obscurcissent, Qu'elle attende en vain la lumière, Et qu'elle ne voie point les paupières de l'aurore!

⁹יחשכו כוכבי נשפו יקו לאור ואין ואל יראה בעפעפי שחר׃

¹⁰Because it shut not up the doors of my [mother's] womb, Nor hid trouble from mine eyes.

¹⁰Car elle n'a pas fermé le sein qui me conçut, Ni dérobé la souffrance à mes regards.

¹⁰כי לא סגר דלתי בטני ויסתר עמל מעיני׃

¹¹Why died I not from the womb? Why did I not give up the ghost when my mother bare me?

¹¹Pourquoi ne suis-je pas mort dans le ventre de ma mère? Pourquoi n'ai-je pas expiré au sortir de ses entrailles?

¹¹למה לא מרחם אמות מבטן יצאתי ואגוע׃

¹²Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breast, that I should suck?

¹²Pourquoi ai-je trouvé des genoux pour me recevoir, Et des mamelles pour m'allaiter?

¹²מדוע קדמוני ברכים ומה שדים כי אינק׃

¹³For now should I have lain down and been quiet; I should have slept; then had I been at rest,

¹³Je serais couché maintenant, je serais tranquille, Je dormirais, je reposerais,

¹³כי עתה שכבתי ואשקוט ישנתי אז ינוח לי׃

¹⁴With kings and counsellors of the earth, Who built up waste places for themselves;

¹⁴Avec les rois et les grands de la terre, Qui se bâtirent des mausolées,

¹⁴עם מלכים ויעצי ארץ הבנים חרבות למו׃

¹⁵Or with princes that had gold, Who filled their houses with silver:

¹⁵Avec les princes qui avaient de l'or, Et qui remplirent d'argent leurs demeures.

¹⁵או עם שרים זהב להם הממלאים בתיהם כסף׃

¹⁶Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been, As infants that never saw light.

¹⁶Ou je n'existerais pas, je serais comme un avorton caché, Comme des enfants qui n'ont pas vu la lumière.

¹⁶או כנפל טמון לא אהיה כעללים לא ראו אור׃

¹⁷There the wicked cease from troubling; And there the weary are at rest.

¹⁷Là ne s'agitent plus les méchants, Et là se reposent ceux qui sont fatigués et sans force;

¹⁷שם רשעים חדלו רגז ושם ינוחו יגיעי כח׃

¹⁸There the prisoners are at ease together; They hear not the voice of the taskmaster.

¹⁸Les captifs sont tous en paix, Ils n'entendent pas la voix de l'oppresseur;

¹⁸יחד אסירים שאננו לא שמעו קול נגש׃

¹⁹The small and the great are there: And the servant is free from his master.

¹⁹Le petit et le grand sont là, Et l'esclave n'est plus soumis à son maître.

¹⁹קטן וגדול שם הוא ועבד חפשי מאדניו׃

²⁰Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, And life unto the bitter in soul;

²⁰Pourquoi donne-t-il la lumière à celui qui souffre, Et la vie à ceux qui ont l'amertume dans l'âme,

²⁰למה יתן לעמל אור וחיים למרי נפש׃

²¹Who long for death, but it cometh not, And dig for it more than for hid treasures;

²¹Qui espèrent en vain la mort, Et qui la convoitent plus qu'un trésor,

²¹המחכים למות ואיננו ויחפרהו ממטמונים׃

²²Who rejoice exceedingly, And are glad, when they can find the grave?

²²Qui seraient transportés de joie Et saisis d'allégresse, s'ils trouvaient le tombeau?

²²השמחים אלי גיל ישישו כי ימצאו קבר׃

²³[Why is light given] to a man whose way is hid, And whom God hath hedged in?

²³A l'homme qui ne sait où aller, Et que Dieu cerne de toutes parts?

²³לגבר אשר דרכו נסתרה ויסך אלוה בעדו׃

²⁴For my sighing cometh before I eat, And my groanings are poured out like water.

²⁴Mes soupirs sont ma nourriture, Et mes cris se répandent comme l'eau.

²⁴כי לפני לחמי אנחתי תבא ויתכו כמים שאגתי׃

²⁵For the thing which I fear cometh upon me, And that which I am afraid of cometh unto me.

²⁵Ce que je crains, c'est ce qui m'arrive; Ce que je redoute, c'est ce qui m'atteint.

²⁵כי פחד פחדתי ויאתיני ואשר יגרתי יבא לי׃

²⁶I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest; But trouble cometh.

²⁶Je n'ai ni tranquillité, ni paix, ni repos, Et le trouble s'est emparé de moi.

²⁶לא שלותי ולא שקטתי ולא נחתי ויבא רגז׃
