1Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
1Eliphaz de Théman prit la parole et dit:
1ויען אליפז התימני ויאמר׃
2If one assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?
2Si nous osons ouvrir la bouche, en seras-tu peiné? Mais qui pourrait garder le silence?
2הנסה דבר אליך תלאה ועצר במלין מי יוכל׃
3Behold, thou hast instructed many, And thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
3Voici, tu as souvent enseigné les autres, Tu as fortifié les mains languissantes,
3הנה יסרת רבים וידים רפות תחזק׃
4Thy words have upholden him that was falling, And thou hast made firm the feeble knees.
4Tes paroles ont relevé ceux qui chancelaient, Tu as affermi les genoux qui pliaient.
4כושל יקימון מליך וברכים כרעות תאמץ׃
5But now it is come unto thee, and thou faintest; It toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
5Et maintenant qu'il s'agit de toi, tu faiblis! Maintenant que tu es atteint, tu te troubles!
5כי עתה תבוא אליך ותלא תגע עדיך ותבהל׃
6Is not thy fear [of God] thy confidence, [And] the integrity of thy ways thy hope?
6Ta crainte de Dieu n'est-elle pas ton soutien? Ton espérance, n'est-ce pas ton intégrité?
6הלא יראתך כסלתך תקותך ותם דרכיך׃
7Remember, I pray thee, who [ever] perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?
7Cherche dans ton souvenir: quel est l'innocent qui a péri? Quels sont les justes qui ont été exterminés?
7זכר נא מי הוא נקי אבד ואיפה ישרים נכחדו׃
8According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, And sow trouble, reap the same.
8Pour moi, je l'ai vu, ceux qui labourent l'iniquité Et qui sèment l'injustice en moissonnent les fruits;
8כאשר ראיתי חרשי און וזרעי עמל יקצרהו׃
9By the breath of God they perish, And by the blast of his anger are they consumed.
9Ils périssent par le souffle de Dieu, Ils sont consumés par le vent de sa colère,
9מנשמת אלוה יאבדו ומרוח אפו יכלו׃
10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, And the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
10Le rugissement des lions prend fin, Les dents des lionceaux sont brisées;
10שאגת אריה וקול שחל ושני כפירים נתעו׃
11The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, And the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.
11Le lion périt faute de proie, Et les petits de la lionne se dispersent.
11ליש אבד מבלי טרף ובני לביא יתפרדו׃
12Now a thing was secretly brought to me, And mine ear received a whisper thereof.
12Une parole est arrivée furtivement jusqu'à moi, Et mon oreille en a recueilli les sons légers.
12ואלי דבר יגנב ותקח אזני שמץ מנהו׃
13In thoughts from the visions of the night, When deep sleep falleth on men,
13Au moment où les visions de la nuit agitent la pensée, Quand les hommes sont livrés à un profond sommeil,
13בשעפים מחזינות לילה בנפל תרדמה על אנשים׃
14Fear came upon me, and trembling, Which made all my bones to shake.
14Je fus saisi de frayeur et d'épouvante, Et tous mes os tremblèrent.
14פחד קראני ורעדה ורב עצמותי הפחיד׃
15Then a spirit passed before my face; The hair of my flesh stood up.
15Un esprit passa près de moi.... Tous mes cheveux se hérissèrent....
15ורוח על פני יחלף תסמר שערת בשרי׃
16It stood still, but I could not discern the appearance thereof; A form was before mine eyes: [There was] silence, and I heard a voice, [saying],
16Une figure d'un aspect inconnu était devant mes yeux, Et j'entendis une voix qui murmurait doucement:
16יעמד ולא אכיר מראהו תמונה לנגד עיני דממה וקול אשמע׃
17Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?
17L'homme serait-il juste devant Dieu? Serait-il pur devant celui qui l'a fait?
17האנוש מאלוה יצדק אם מעשהו יטהר גבר׃
18Behold, he putteth no trust in his servants; And his angels he chargeth with folly:
18Si Dieu n'a pas confiance en ses serviteurs, S'il trouve de la folie chez ses anges,
18הן בעבדיו לא יאמין ובמלאכיו ישים תהלה׃
19How much more them that dwell in houses of clay, Whose foundation is in the dust, Who are crushed before the moth!
19Combien plus chez ceux qui habitent des maisons d'argile, Qui tirent leur origine de la poussière, Et qui peuvent être écrasés comme un vermisseau!
19אף שכני בתי חמר אשר בעפר יסודם ידכאום לפני עש׃
20Betwixt morning and evening they are destroyed: They perish for ever without any regarding it.
20Du matin au soir ils sont brisés, Ils périssent pour toujours, et nul n'y prend garde;
20מבקר לערב יכתו מבלי משים לנצח יאבדו׃
21Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.
21Le fil de leur vie est coupé, Ils meurent, et ils n'ont pas acquis la sagesse.
21הלא נסע יתרם בם ימותו ולא בחכמה׃
