¹Call now; is there any that will answer thee? And to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?

¹Crie maintenant! Qui te répondra? Auquel des saints t'adresseras-tu?

¹קרא נא היש עונך ואל מי מקדשים תפנה׃

²For vexation killeth the foolish man, And jealousy slayeth the silly one.

²L'insensé périt dans sa colère, Le fou meurt dans ses emportements.

²כי לאויל יהרג כעש ופתה תמית קנאה׃

³I have seen the foolish taking root: But suddenly I cursed his habitation.

³J'ai vu l'insensé prendre racine; Puis soudain j'ai maudit sa demeure.

³אני ראיתי אויל משריש ואקוב נוהו פתאם׃

⁴His children are far from safety, And they are crushed in the gate, Neither is there any to deliver them:

⁴Plus de prospérité pour ses fils; Ils sont foulés à la porte, et personne qui les délivre!

⁴ירחקו בניו מישע וידכאו בשער ואין מציל׃

⁵Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, And taketh it even out of the thorns; And the snare gapeth for their substance.

⁵Sa moisson est dévorée par des affamés, Qui viennent l'enlever jusque dans les épines, Et ses biens sont engloutis par des hommes altérés.

⁵אשר קצירו רעב יאכל ואל מצנים יקחהו ושאף צמים חילם׃

⁶For affliction cometh not forth from the dust, Neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

⁶Le malheur ne sort pas de la poussière, Et la souffrance ne germe pas du sol;

⁶כי לא יצא מעפר און ומאדמה לא יצמח עמל׃

⁷But man is born unto trouble, As the sparks fly upward.

⁷L'homme naît pour souffrir, Comme l'étincelle pour voler.

⁷כי אדם לעמל יולד ובני רשף יגביהו עוף׃

⁸But as for me, I would seek unto God, And unto God would I commit my cause;

⁸Pour moi, j'aurais recours à Dieu, Et c'est à Dieu que j'exposerais ma cause.

⁸אולם אני אדרש אל אל ואל אלהים אשים דברתי׃

⁹Who doeth great things and unsearchable, Marvellous things without number:

⁹Il fait des choses grandes et insondables, Des merveilles sans nombre;

⁹עשה גדלות ואין חקר נפלאות עד אין מספר׃

¹⁰Who giveth rain upon the earth, And sendeth waters upon the fields;

¹⁰Il répand la pluie sur la terre, Et envoie l'eau sur les campagnes;

¹⁰הנתן מטר על פני ארץ ושלח מים על פני חוצות׃

¹¹So that he setteth up on high those that are low, And those that mourn are exalted to safety.

¹¹Il relève les humbles, Et délivre les affligés;

¹¹לשום שפלים למרום וקדרים שגבו ישע׃

¹²He frustrateth the devices of the crafty, So that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

¹²Il anéantit les projets des hommes rusés, Et leurs mains ne peuvent les accomplir;

¹²מפר מחשבות ערומים ולא תעשינה ידיהם תושיה׃

¹³He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; And the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.

¹³Il prend les sages dans leur propre ruse, Et les desseins des hommes artificieux sont renversés:

¹³לכד חכמים בערמם ועצת נפתלים נמהרה׃

¹⁴They meet with darkness in the day-time, And grope at noonday as in the night.

¹⁴Ils rencontrent les ténèbres au milieu du jour, Ils tâtonnent en plein midi comme dans la nuit.

¹⁴יומם יפגשו חשך וכלילה ימששו בצהרים׃

¹⁵But he saveth from the sword of their mouth, Even the needy from the hand of the mighty.

¹⁵Ainsi Dieu protège le faible contre leurs menaces, Et le sauve de la main des puissants;

¹⁵וישע מחרב מפיהם ומיד חזק אביון׃

¹⁶So the poor hath hope, And iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

¹⁶Et l'espérance soutient le malheureux, Mais l'iniquité ferme la bouche.

¹⁶ותהי לדל תקוה ועלתה קפצה פיה׃

¹⁷Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: Therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty.

¹⁷Heureux l'homme que Dieu châtie! Ne méprise pas la correction du Tout-Puissant.

¹⁷הנה אשרי אנוש יוכחנו אלוה ומוסר שדי אל תמאס׃

¹⁸For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; He woundeth, and his hands make whole.

¹⁸Il fait la plaie, et il la bande; Il blesse, et sa main guérit.

¹⁸כי הוא יכאיב ויחבש ימחץ וידו תרפינה׃

¹⁹He will deliver thee in six troubles; Yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

¹⁹Six fois il te délivrera de l'angoisse, Et sept fois le mal ne t'atteindra pas.

¹⁹בשש צרות יצילך ובשבע לא יגע בך רע׃

²⁰In famine he will redeem thee from death; And in war from the power of the sword.

²⁰Il te sauvera de la mort pendant la famine, Et des coups du glaive pendant la guerre.

²⁰ברעב פדך ממות ובמלחמה מידי חרב׃

²¹Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue; Neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

²¹Tu seras à l'abri du fléau de la langue, Tu seras sans crainte quand viendra la dévastation.

²¹בשוט לשון תחבא ולא תירא משד כי יבוא׃

²²At destruction and dearth thou shalt laugh; Neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

²²Tu te riras de la dévastation comme de la famine, Et tu n'auras pas à redouter les bêtes de la terre;

²²לשד ולכפן תשחק ומחית הארץ אל תירא׃

²³For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field; And the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

²³Car tu feras alliance avec les pierres des champs, Et les bêtes de la terre seront en paix avec toi.

²³כי עם אבני השדה בריתך וחית השדה השלמה לך׃

²⁴And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; And thou shalt visit thy fold, and shalt miss nothing.

²⁴Tu jouiras du bonheur sous ta tente, Tu retrouveras tes troupeaux au complet,

²⁴וידעת כי שלום אהלך ופקדת נוך ולא תחטא׃

²⁵Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, And thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

²⁵Tu verras ta postérité s'accroître, Et tes rejetons se multiplier comme l'herbe des champs.

²⁵וידעת כי רב זרעך וצאצאיך כעשב הארץ׃

²⁶Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, Like as a shock of grain cometh in in its season.

²⁶Tu entreras au sépulcre dans la vieillesse, Comme on emporte une gerbe en son temps.

²⁶תבוא בכלח אלי קבר כעלות גדיש בעתו׃

²⁷Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; Hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

²⁷Voilà ce que nous avons reconnu, voilà ce qui est; A toi d'entendre et de mettre à profit.

²⁷הנה זאת חקרנוה כן היא שמענה ואתה דע לך׃
