1And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.
1Josué assembla toutes les tribus d'Israël à Sichem, et il convoqua les anciens d'Israël, ses chefs, ses juges et ses officiers. Et ils se présentèrent devant Dieu.
1ויאסף יהושע את כל שבטי ישראל שכמה ויקרא לזקני ישראל ולראשיו ולשפטיו ולשטריו ויתיצבו לפני האלהים׃
2And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor: and they served other gods.
2Josué dit à tout le peuple: Ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Vos pères, Térach, père d'Abraham et père de Nachor, habitaient anciennement de l'autre côté du fleuve, et ils servaient d'autres dieux.
2ויאמר יהושע אל כל העם כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל בעבר הנהר ישבו אבותיכם מעולם תרח אבי אברהם ואבי נחור ויעבדו אלהים אחרים׃
3And I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
3Je pris votre père Abraham de l'autre côté du fleuve, et je lui fis parcourir tout le pays de Canaan; je multipliai sa postérité, et je lui donnai Isaac.
3ואקח את אביכם את אברהם מעבר הנהר ואולך אותו בכל ארץ כנען וארב את זרעו ואתן לו את יצחק׃
4And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it: and Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.
4Je donnai à Isaac Jacob et Esaü, et je donnai en propriété à Esaü la montagne de Séir, mais Jacob et ses fils descendirent en Egypte.
4ואתן ליצחק את יעקב ואת עשו ואתן לעשו את הר שעיר לרשת אותו ויעקב ובניו ירדו מצרים׃
5And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did in the midst thereof: and afterward I brought you out.
5J'envoyai Moïse et Aaron, et je frappai l'Egypte par les prodiges que j'opérai au milieu d'elle; puis je vous en fis sortir.
5ואשלח את משה ואת אהרן ואגף את מצרים כאשר עשיתי בקרבו ואחר הוצאתי אתכם׃
6And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and with horsemen unto the Red Sea.
6Je fis sortir vos pères de l'Egypte, et vous arrivâtes à la mer. Les Egyptiens poursuivirent vos pères jusqu'à la mer Rouge, avec des chars et des cavaliers.
6ואוציא את אבותיכם ממצרים ותבאו הימה וירדפו מצרים אחרי אבותיכם ברכב ובפרשים ים סוף׃
7And when they cried out unto Jehovah, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness many days.
7Vos pères crièrent à l'Eternel. Et l'Eternel mit des ténèbres entre vous et les Egyptiens, il ramena sur eux la mer, et elle les couvrit. Vos yeux ont vu ce que j'ai fait aux Egyptiens. Et vous restâtes longtemps dans le désert.
7ויצעקו אל יהוה וישם מאפל ביניכם ובין המצרים ויבא עליו את הים ויכסהו ותראינה עיניכם את אשר עשיתי במצרים ותשבו במדבר ימים רבים׃
8And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that dwelt beyond the Jordan: and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand, and ye possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
8Je vous conduisis dans le pays des Amoréens, qui habitaient de l'autre côté du Jourdain, et ils combattirent contre vous. Je les livrai entre vos mains; vous prîtes possession de leur pays, et je les détruisis devant vous.
8ואביאה אתכם אל ארץ האמרי היושב בעבר הירדן וילחמו אתכם ואתן אותם בידכם ותירשו את ארצם ואשמידם מפניכם׃
9Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel: and he sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you;
9Balak, fils de Tsippor, roi de Moab, se leva et combattit Israël. Il fit appeler Balaam, fils de Beor, pour qu'il vous maudît.
9ויקם בלק בן צפור מלך מואב וילחם בישראל וישלח ויקרא לבלעם בן בעור לקלל אתכם׃
10but I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.
10Mais je ne voulus point écouter Balaam; il vous bénit, et je vous délivrai de la main de Balak.
10ולא אביתי לשמע לבלעם ויברך ברוך אתכם ואצל אתכם מידו׃
11And ye went over the Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.
11Vous passâtes le Jourdain, et vous arrivâtes à Jéricho. Les habitants de Jéricho combattirent contre vous, les Amoréens, les Phéréziens, les Cananéens, les Héthiens, les Guirgasiens, les Héviens et les Jébusiens. Je les livrai entre vos mains,
11ותעברו את הירדן ותבאו אל יריחו וילחמו בכם בעלי יריחו האמרי והפרזי והכנעני והחתי והגרגשי החוי והיבוסי ואתן אותם בידכם׃
12And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
12et j'envoyai devant vous les frelons, qui les chassèrent loin de votre face, comme les deux rois des Amoréens: ce ne fut ni par ton épée, ni par ton arc.
12ואשלח לפניכם את הצרעה ותגרש אותם מפניכם שני מלכי האמרי לא בחרבך ולא בקשתך׃
13And I gave you a land whereon thou hadst not labored, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell therein; of vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.
13Je vous donnai un pays que vous n'aviez point cultivé, des villes que vous n'aviez point bâties et que vous habitez, des vignes et des oliviers que vous n'aviez point plantés et qui vous servent de nourriture.
13ואתן לכם ארץ אשר לא יגעת בה וערים אשר לא בניתם ותשבו בהם כרמים וזיתים אשר לא נטעתם אתם אכלים׃
14Now therefore fear Jehovah, and serve him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt; and serve ye Jehovah.
14Maintenant, craignez l'Eternel, et servez-le avec intégrité et fidélité. Faites disparaître les dieux qu'ont servis vos pères de l'autre côté du fleuve et en Egypte, et servez l'Eternel.
14ועתה יראו את יהוה ועבדו אתו בתמים ובאמת והסירו את אלהים אשר עבדו אבותיכם בעבר הנהר ובמצרים ועבדו את יהוה׃
15And if it seem evil unto you to serve Jehovah, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah.
15Et si vous ne trouvez pas bon de servir l'Eternel, choisissez aujourd'hui qui vous voulez servir, ou les dieux que servaient vos pères au delà du fleuve, ou les dieux des Amoréens dans le pays desquels vous habitez. Moi et ma maison, nous servirons l'Eternel.
15ואם רע בעיניכם לעבד את יהוה בחרו לכם היום את מי תעבדון אם את אלהים אשר עבדו אבותיכם אשר בעבר הנהר ואם את אלהי האמרי אשר אתם ישבים בארצם ואנכי וביתי נעבד את יהוה׃
16And the people answered and said, Far be it from us that we should forsake Jehovah, to serve other gods;
16Le peuple répondit, et dit: Loin de nous la pensée d'abandonner l'Eternel, et de servir d'autres dieux!
16ויען העם ויאמר חלילה לנו מעזב את יהוה לעבד אלהים אחרים׃
17for Jehovah our God, he it is that brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and that did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed;
17Car l'Eternel est notre Dieu; c'est lui qui nous a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude, nous et nos pères; c'est lui qui a opéré sous nos yeux ces grands prodiges, et qui nous a gardés pendant toute la route que nous avons suivie et parmi tous les peuples au milieu desquels nous avons passé.
17כי יהוה אלהינו הוא המעלה אתנו ואת אבותינו מארץ מצרים מבית עבדים ואשר עשה לעינינו את האתות הגדלות האלה וישמרנו בכל הדרך אשר הלכנו בה ובכל העמים אשר עברנו בקרבם׃
18and Jehovah drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites that dwelt in the land: therefore we also will serve Jehovah; for he is our God.
18Il a chassé devant nous tous les peuples, et les Amoréens qui habitaient ce pays. Nous aussi, nous servirons l'Eternel, car il est notre Dieu.
18ויגרש יהוה את כל העמים ואת האמרי ישב הארץ מפנינו גם אנחנו נעבד את יהוה כי הוא אלהינו׃
19And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve Jehovah; for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgression nor your sins.
19Josué dit au peuple: Vous n'aurez pas la force de servir l'Eternel, car c'est un Dieu saint, c'est un Dieu jaloux; il ne pardonnera point vos transgressions et vos péchés.
19ויאמר יהושע אל העם לא תוכלו לעבד את יהוה כי אלהים קדשים הוא אל קנוא הוא לא ישא לפשעכם ולחטאותיכם׃
20If ye forsake Jehovah, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.
20Lorsque vous abandonnerez l'Eternel et que vous servirez des dieux étrangers, il reviendra vous faire du mal, et il vous consumera après vous avoir fait du bien.
20כי תעזבו את יהוה ועבדתם אלהי נכר ושב והרע לכם וכלה אתכם אחרי אשר היטיב לכם׃
21And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve Jehovah.
21Le peuple dit à Josué: Non! car nous servirons l'Eternel.
21ויאמר העם אל יהושע לא כי את יהוה נעבד׃
22And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you Jehovah, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.
22Josué dit au peuple: Vous êtes témoins contre vous-mêmes que c'est vous qui avez choisi l'Eternel pour le servir. Ils répondirent: Nous en sommes témoins.
22ויאמר יהושע אל העם עדים אתם בכם כי אתם בחרתם לכם את יהוה לעבד אותו ויאמרו עדים׃
23Now therefore put away, [said he], the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto Jehovah, the God of Israel.
23Otez donc les dieux étrangers qui sont au milieu de vous, et tournez votre coeur vers l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
23ועתה הסירו את אלהי הנכר אשר בקרבכם והטו את לבבכם אל יהוה אלהי ישראל׃
24And the people said unto Joshua, Jehovah our God will we serve, and unto his voice will we hearken.
24Et le peuple dit à Josué: Nous servirons l'Eternel, notre Dieu, et nous obéirons à sa voix.
24ויאמרו העם אל יהושע את יהוה אלהינו נעבד ובקולו נשמע׃
25So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.
25Josué fit en ce jour une alliance avec le peuple, et lui donna des lois et des ordonnances, à Sichem.
25ויכרת יהושע ברית לעם ביום ההוא וישם לו חק ומשפט בשכם׃
26And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Jehovah.
26Josué écrivit ces choses dans le livre de la loi de Dieu. Il prit une grande pierre, qu'il dressa là sous le chêne qui était dans le lieu consacré à l'Eternel.
26ויכתב יהושע את הדברים האלה בספר תורת אלהים ויקח אבן גדולה ויקימה שם תחת האלה אשר במקדש יהוה׃
27And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it hath heard all the words of Jehovah which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest ye deny your God.
27Et Josué dit à tout le peuple: Voici, cette pierre servira de témoin contre nous, car elle a entendu toutes les paroles que l'Eternel nous a dites; elle servira de témoin contre vous, afin que vous ne soyez pas infidèles à votre Dieu.
27ויאמר יהושע אל כל העם הנה האבן הזאת תהיה בנו לעדה כי היא שמעה את כל אמרי יהוה אשר דבר עמנו והיתה בכם לעדה פן תכחשון באלהיכם׃
28So Joshua sent the people away, every man unto his inheritance.
28Puis Josué renvoya le peuple, chacun dans son héritage.
28וישלח יהושע את העם איש לנחלתו׃
29And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.
29Après ces choses, Josué, fils de Nun, serviteur de l'Eternel, mourut, âgé de cent dix ans.
29ויהי אחרי הדברים האלה וימת יהושע בן נון עבד יהוה בן מאה ועשר שנים׃
30And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.
30On l'ensevelit dans le territoire qu'il avait eu en partage, à Thimnath-Sérach, dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, au nord de la montagne de Gaasch.
30ויקברו אתו בגבול נחלתו בתמנת סרח אשר בהר אפרים מצפון להר געש׃
31And Israel served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of Jehovah, that he had wrought for Israel.
31Israël servit l'Eternel pendant toute la vie de Josué, et pendant toute la vie des anciens qui survécurent à Josué et qui connaissaient tout ce que l'Eternel avait fait en faveur d'Israël.
31ויעבד ישראל את יהוה כל ימי יהושע וכל ימי הזקנים אשר האריכו ימים אחרי יהושע ואשר ידעו את כל מעשה יהוה אשר עשה לישראל׃
32And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money: and they became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.
32Les os de Joseph, que les enfants d'Israël avaient rapportés d'Egypte, furent enterrés à Sichem, dans la portion du champ que Jacob avait achetée des fils de Hamor, père de Sichem, pour cent kesita, et qui appartint à l'héritage des fils de Joseph.
32ואת עצמות יוסף אשר העלו בני ישראל ממצרים קברו בשכם בחלקת השדה אשר קנה יעקב מאת בני חמור אבי שכם במאה קשיטה ויהיו לבני יוסף לנחלה׃
33And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill-country of Ephraim.
33Eléazar, fils d'Aaron, mourut, et on l'enterra à Guibeath-Phinées, qui avait été donnée à son fils Phinées, dans la montagne d'Ephraïm.
33ואלעזר בן אהרן מת ויקברו אתו בגבעת פינחס בנו אשר נתן לו בהר אפרים׃
