¹And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, that were by the sea, heard how that Jehovah had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

¹Lorsque tous les rois des Amoréens à l'occident du Jourdain et tous les rois des Cananéens près de la mer apprirent que l'Eternel avait mis à sec les eaux du Jourdain devant les enfants d'Israël jusqu'à ce que nous eussions passé, ils perdirent courage et furent consternés à l'aspect des enfants d'Israël.

¹ויהי כשמע כל מלכי האמרי אשר בעבר הירדן ימה וכל מלכי הכנעני אשר על הים את אשר הוביש יהוה את מי הירדן מפני בני ישראל עד עברנו וימס לבבם ולא היה בם עוד רוח מפני בני ישראל׃

²At that time Jehovah said unto Joshua, Make thee knives of flint, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

²En ce temps-là, l'Eternel dit à Josué: Fais-toi des couteaux de pierre, et circoncis de nouveau les enfants d'Israël, une seconde fois.

²בעת ההיא אמר יהוה אל יהושע עשה לך חרבות צרים ושוב מל את בני ישראל שנית׃

³And Joshua made him knives of lint, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

³Josué se fit des couteaux de pierre, et il circoncit les enfants d'Israël sur la colline d'Araloth.

³ויעש לו יהושע חרבות צרים וימל את בני ישראל אל גבעת הערלות׃

⁴And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: all the people that came forth out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came forth out of Egypt.

⁴Voici la raison pour laquelle Josué les circoncit. Tout le peuple sorti d'Egypte, les mâles, tous les hommes de guerre, étaient morts dans le désert, pendant la route, après leur sortie d'Egypte.

⁴וזה הדבר אשר מל יהושע כל העם היצא ממצרים הזכרים כל אנשי המלחמה מתו במדבר בדרך בצאתם ממצרים׃

⁵For all the people that came out were circumcised; but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, they had not circumcised.

⁵Tout ce peuple sorti d'Egypte était circoncis; mais tout le peuple né dans le désert, pendant la route, après la sortie d'Egypte, n'avait point été circoncis.

⁵כי מלים היו כל העם היצאים וכל העם הילדים במדבר בדרך בצאתם ממצרים לא מלו׃

⁶For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the nation, even the men of war that came forth out of Egypt, were consumed, because they hearkened not unto the voice of Jehovah: unto whom Jehovah sware that he would not let them see the land which Jehovah sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

⁶Car les enfants d'Israël avaient marché quarante ans dans le désert jusqu'à la destruction de toute la nation des hommes de guerre qui étaient sortis d'Egypte et qui n'avaient point écouté la voix de l'Eternel; l'Eternel leur jura de ne pas leur faire voir le pays qu'il avait juré à leurs pères de nous donner, pays où coulent le lait et le miel.

⁶כי ארבעים שנה הלכו בני ישראל במדבר עד תם כל הגוי אנשי המלחמה היצאים ממצרים אשר לא שמעו בקול יהוה אשר נשבע יהוה להם לבלתי הראותם את הארץ אשר נשבע יהוה לאבותם לתת לנו ארץ זבת חלב ודבש׃

⁷And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them did Joshua circumcise: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

⁷Ce sont leurs enfants qu'il établit à leur place; et Josué les circoncit, car ils étaient incirconcis, parce qu'on ne les avait point circoncis pendant la route.

⁷ואת בניהם הקים תחתם אתם מל יהושע כי ערלים היו כי לא מלו אותם בדרך׃

⁸And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the nation, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.

⁸Lorsqu'on eut achevé de circoncire toute la nation, ils restèrent à leur place dans le camp jusqu'à leur guérison.

⁸ויהי כאשר תמו כל הגוי להמול וישבו תחתם במחנה עד חיותם׃

⁹And Jehovah said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of that place was called Gilgal, unto this day.

⁹L'Eternel dit à Josué: Aujourd'hui, j'ai roulé de dessus vous l'opprobre de l'Egypte. Et ce lieu fut appelé du nom de Guilgal jusqu'à ce jour.

⁹ויאמר יהוה אל יהושע היום גלותי את חרפת מצרים מעליכם ויקרא שם המקום ההוא גלגל עד היום הזה׃

¹⁰And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal; and they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

¹⁰Les enfants d'Israël campèrent à Guilgal; et ils célébrèrent la Pâque le quatorzième jour du mois, sur le soir, dans les plaines de Jéricho.

¹⁰ויחנו בני ישראל בגלגל ויעשו את הפסח בארבעה עשר יום לחדש בערב בערבות יריחו׃

¹¹And they did eat of the produce of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes and parched grain, in the selfsame day.

¹¹Ils mangèrent du blé du pays le lendemain de la Pâque, des pains sans levain et du grain rôti; ils en mangèrent ce même jour.

¹¹ויאכלו מעבור הארץ ממחרת הפסח מצות וקלוי בעצם היום הזה׃

¹²And the manna ceased on the morrow, after they had eaten of the produce of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

¹²La manne cessa le lendemain de la Pâque, quand ils mangèrent du blé du pays; les enfants d'Israël n'eurent plus de manne, et ils mangèrent des produits du pays de Canaan cette année-là.

¹²וישבת המן ממחרת באכלם מעבור הארץ ולא היה עוד לבני ישראל מן ויאכלו מתבואת ארץ כנען בשנה ההיא׃

¹³And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

¹³Comme Josué était près de Jéricho, il leva les yeux, et regarda. Voici, un homme se tenait debout devant lui, son épée nue dans la main. Il alla vers lui, et lui dit: Es-tu des nôtres ou de nos ennemis?

¹³ויהי בהיות יהושע ביריחו וישא עיניו וירא והנה איש עמד לנגדו וחרבו שלופה בידו וילך יהושע אליו ויאמר לו הלנו אתה אם לצרינו׃

¹⁴And he said, Nay; but [as] prince of the host of Jehovah am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?

¹⁴Il répondit: Non, mais je suis le chef de l'armée de l'Eternel, j'arrive maintenant. Josué tomba le visage contre terre, se prosterna, et lui dit: Qu'est-ce que mon seigneur dit à son serviteur?

¹⁴ויאמר לא כי אני שר צבא יהוה עתה באתי ויפל יהושע אל פניו ארצה וישתחו ויאמר לו מה אדני מדבר אל עבדו׃

¹⁵And the prince of Jehovah's host said unto Joshua, Put off thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

¹⁵Et le chef de l'armée de l'Eternel dit à Josué: Ote tes souliers de tes pieds, car le lieu sur lequel tu te tiens est saint. Et Josué fit ainsi.

¹⁵ויאמר שר צבא יהוה אל יהושע של נעלך מעל רגלך כי המקום אשר אתה עמד עליו קדש הוא ויעש יהושע כן׃
