1And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.
1Dans ce temps où il n'y avait point de roi en Israël, un Lévite, qui séjournait à l'extrémité de la montagne d'Ephraïm, prit pour sa concubine une femme de Bethléhem de Juda.
1ויהי בימים ההם ומלך אין בישראל ויהי איש לוי גר בירכתי הר אפרים ויקח לו אשה פילגש מבית לחם יהודה׃
2And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there the space of four months.
2Sa concubine lui fit infidélité, et elle le quitta pour aller dans la maison de son père à Bethléhem de Juda, où elle resta l'espace de quatre mois.
2ותזנה עליו פילגשו ותלך מאתו אל בית אביה אל בית לחם יהודה ותהי שם ימים ארבעה חדשים׃
3And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly unto her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house; and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
3Son mari se leva et alla vers elle, pour parler à son coeur et la ramener. Il avait avec lui son serviteur et deux ânes. Elle le fit entrer dans la maison de son père; et quand le père de la jeune femme le vit, il le reçut avec joie.
3ויקם אישה וילך אחריה לדבר על לבה להשיבו ונערו עמו וצמד חמרים ותביאהו בית אביה ויראהו אבי הנערה וישמח לקראתו׃
4And his father-in-law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.
4Son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, le retint trois jours chez lui. Ils mangèrent et burent, et ils y passèrent la nuit.
4ויחזק בו חתנו אבי הנערה וישב אתו שלשת ימים ויאכלו וישתו וילינו שם׃
5And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son-in-law, Strengthen thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye shall go your way.
5Le quatrième jour, ils se levèrent de bon matin, et le Lévite se disposait à partir. Mais le père de la jeune femme dit à son gendre: Prends un morceau de pain pour fortifier ton coeur; vous partirez ensuite.
5ויהי ביום הרביעי וישכימו בבקר ויקם ללכת ויאמר אבי הנערה אל חתנו סעד לבך פת לחם ואחר תלכו׃
6So they sat down, and did eat and drink, both of them together: and the damsel's father said unto the man, Be pleased, I pray thee, to tarry all night, and let thy heart be merry.
6Et ils s'assirent, et ils mangèrent et burent eux deux ensemble. Puis le père de la jeune femme dit au mari: Décide-toi donc à passer la nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse.
6וישבו ויאכלו שניהם יחדו וישתו ויאמר אבי הנערה אל האיש הואל נא ולין ויטב לבך׃
7And the man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.
7Le mari se levait pour s'en aller; mais, sur les instances de son beau-père, il passa encore la nuit.
7ויקם האיש ללכת ויפצר בו חתנו וישב וילן שם׃
8And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel's father said, Strengthen thy heart, I pray thee, and tarry ye until the day declineth; and they did eat, both of them.
8Le cinquième jour, il se leva de bon matin pour partir. Alors le père de la jeune femme dit: Fortifie ton coeur, je te prie; et restez jusqu'au déclin du jour. Et ils mangèrent eux deux.
8וישכם בבקר ביום החמישי ללכת ויאמר אבי הנערה סעד נא לבבך והתמהמהו עד נטות היום ויאכלו שניהם׃
9And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thy heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
9Le mari se levait pour s'en aller, avec sa concubine et son serviteur; mais son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, lui dit: Voici, le jour baisse, il se fait tard, passez donc la nuit; voici, le jour est sur son déclin, passe ici la nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse; demain vous vous lèverez de bon matin pour vous mettre en route, et tu t'en iras à ta tente.
9ויקם האיש ללכת הוא ופילגשו ונערו ויאמר לו חתנו אבי הנערה הנה נא רפה היום לערב לינו נא הנה חנות היום לין פה וייטב לבבך והשכמתם מחר לדרככם והלכת לאהלך׃
10But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of asses saddled; his concubine also was with him.
10Le mari ne voulut point passer la nuit, il se leva et partit. Il arriva jusque devant Jebus, qui est Jérusalem, avec les deux ânes bâtés et avec sa concubine.
10ולא אבה האיש ללון ויקם וילך ויבא עד נכח יבוס היא ירושלם ועמו צמד חמורים חבושים ופילגשו עמו׃
11When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.
11Lorsqu'ils furent près de Jebus, le jour avait beaucoup baissé. Le serviteur dit alors à son maître: Allons, dirigeons-nous vers cette ville des Jébusiens, et nous y passerons la nuit.
11הם עם יבוס והיום רד מאד ויאמר הנער אל אדניו לכה נא ונסורה אל עיר היבוסי הזאת ונלין בה׃
12And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.
12Son maître lui répondit: Nous n'entrerons pas dans une ville d'étrangers, où il n'y a point d'enfants d'Israël, nous irons jusqu'à Guibea.
12ויאמר אליו אדניו לא נסור אל עיר נכרי אשר לא מבני ישראל הנה ועברנו עד גבעה׃
13And he said unto his servant, Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.
13Il dit encore à son serviteur: Allons, approchons-nous de l'un de ces lieux, Guibea ou Rama, et nous y passerons la nuit.
13ויאמר לנערו לך ונקרבה באחד המקמות ולנו בגבעה או ברמה׃
14So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them near to Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
14Ils continuèrent à marcher, et le soleil se coucha quand ils furent près de Guibea, qui appartient à Benjamin.
14ויעברו וילכו ותבא להם השמש אצל הגבעה אשר לבנימן׃
15And they turned aside thither, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.
15Ils se dirigèrent de ce côté pour aller passer la nuit à Guibea. Le Lévite entra, et il s'arrêta sur la place de la ville. Il n'y eut personne qui les reçût dans sa maison pour qu'ils y passassent la nuit.
15ויסרו שם לבוא ללון בגבעה ויבא וישב ברחוב העיר ואין איש מאסף אותם הביתה ללון׃
16And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even: now the man was of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.
16Et voici, un vieillard revenait le soir de travailler aux champs; cet homme était de la montagne d'Ephraïm, il séjournait à Guibea, et les gens du lieu étaient Benjamites.
16והנה איש זקן בא מן מעשהו מן השדה בערב והאיש מהר אפרים והוא גר בגבעה ואנשי המקום בני ימיני׃
17And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?
17Il leva les yeux, et vit le voyageur sur la place de la ville. Et le vieillard lui dit: Où vas-tu, et d'où viens-tu?
17וישא עיניו וירא את האיש הארח ברחב העיר ויאמר האיש הזקן אנה תלך ומאין תבוא׃
18And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah unto the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim; from thence am I, and I went to Beth-lehem-judah: and I am [now] going to the house of Jehovah; and there is no man that taketh me into his house.
18Il lui répondit: Nous allons de Bethléhem de Juda jusqu'à l'extrémité de la montagne d'Ephraïm, d'où je suis. J'étais allé à Bethléhem de Juda, et je me rends à la maison de l'Eternel. Mais il n'y a personne qui me reçoive dans sa demeure.
18ויאמר אליו עברים אנחנו מבית לחם יהודה עד ירכתי הר אפרים משם אנכי ואלך עד בית לחם יהודה ואת בית יהוה אני הלך ואין איש מאסף אותי הביתה׃
19Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man that is with thy servants: there is no want of anything.
19Nous avons cependant de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes; nous avons aussi du pain et du vin pour moi, pour ta servante, et pour le garçon qui est avec tes serviteurs. Il ne nous manque rien.
19וגם תבן גם מספוא יש לחמורינו וגם לחם ויין יש לי ולאמתך ולנער עם עבדיך אין מחסור כל דבר׃
20And the old man said, Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.
20Le vieillard dit: Que la paix soit avec toi! Je me charge de tous tes besoins, tu ne passeras pas la nuit sur la place.
20ויאמר האיש הזקן שלום לך רק כל מחסורך עלי רק ברחוב אל תלן׃
21So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder; and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
21Il les fit entrer dans sa maison, et il donna du fourrage aux ânes. Les voyageurs se lavèrent les pieds; puis ils mangèrent et burent.
21ויביאהו לביתו ויבול לחמורים וירחצו רגליהם ויאכלו וישתו׃
22As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, beset the house round about, beating at the door; and they spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thy house, that we may know him.
22Pendant qu'ils étaient à se réjouir, voici, les hommes de la ville, gens pervers, entourèrent la maison, frappèrent à la porte, et dirent au vieillard, maître de la maison: Fais sortir l'homme qui est entré chez toi, pour que nous le connaissions.
22המה מיטיבים את לבם והנה אנשי העיר אנשי בני בליעל נסבו את הבית מתדפקים על הדלת ויאמרו אל האיש בעל הבית הזקן לאמר הוצא את האיש אשר בא אל ביתך ונדענו׃
23And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this folly.
23Le maître de la maison, se présentant à eux, leur dit: Non, mes frères, ne faites pas le mal, je vous prie; puisque cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne commettez pas cette infamie.
23ויצא אליהם האיש בעל הבית ויאמר אלהם אל אחי אל תרעו נא אחרי אשר בא האיש הזה אל ביתי אל תעשו את הנבלה הזאת׃
24Behold, here is my daughter a virgin, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not any such folly.
24Voici, j'ai une fille vierge, et cet homme a une concubine; je vous les amènerai dehors; vous les déshonorerez, et vous leur ferez ce qu'il vous plaira. Mais ne commettez pas sur cet homme une action aussi infâme.
24הנה בתי הבתולה ופילגשהו אוציאה נא אותם וענו אותם ועשו להם הטוב בעיניכם ולאיש הזה לא תעשו דבר הנבלה הזאת׃
25But the men would not hearken to him: so the man laid hold on his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
25Ces gens ne voulurent point l'écouter. Alors l'homme prit sa concubine, et la leur amena dehors. Ils la connurent, et ils abusèrent d'elle toute la nuit jusqu'au matin; puis ils la renvoyèrent au lever de l'aurore.
25ולא אבו האנשים לשמע לו ויחזק האיש בפילגשו ויצא אליהם החוץ וידעו אותה ויתעללו בה כל הלילה עד הבקר וישלחוה בעלות השחר׃
26Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.
26Vers le matin, cette femme alla tomber à l'entrée de la maison de l'homme chez qui était son mari, et elle resta là jusqu'au jour.
26ותבא האשה לפנות הבקר ותפל פתח בית האיש אשר אדוניה שם עד האור׃
27And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands upon the threshold.
27Et le matin, son mari se leva, ouvrit la porte de la maison, et sortit pour continuer son chemin. Mais voici, la femme, sa concubine, était étendue à l'entrée de la maison, les mains sur le seuil.
27ויקם אדניה בבקר ויפתח דלתות הבית ויצא ללכת לדרכו והנה האשה פילגשו נפלת פתח הבית וידיה על הסף׃
28And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going; but none answered: then he took her up upon the ass; and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
28Il lui dit: Lève-toi, et allons-nous-en. Elle ne répondit pas. Alors le mari la mit sur un âne, et partit pour aller dans sa demeure.
28ויאמר אליה קומי ונלכה ואין ענה ויקחה על החמור ויקם האיש וילך למקמו׃
29And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.
29Arrivé chez lui, il prit un couteau, saisit sa concubine, et la coupa membre par membre en douze morceaux, qu'il envoya dans tout le territoire d'Israël.
29ויבא אל ביתו ויקח את המאכלת ויחזק בפילגשו וינתחה לעצמיה לשנים עשר נתחים וישלחה בכל גבול ישראל׃
30And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider it, take counsel, and speak.
30Tous ceux qui virent cela dirent: Jamais rien de pareil n'est arrivé et ne s'est vu depuis que les enfants d'Israël sont montés du pays d'Egypte jusqu'à ce jour; prenez la chose à coeur, consultez-vous, et parlez!
30והיה כל הראה ואמר לא נהיתה ולא נראתה כזאת למיום עלות בני ישראל מארץ מצרים עד היום הזה שימו לכם עליה עצו ודברו׃
