1Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto Jehovah at Mizpah.
1Tous les enfants d'Israël sortirent, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer-Schéba et au pays de Galaad, et l'assemblée se réunit comme un seul homme devant l'Eternel, à Mitspa.
1ויצאו כל בני ישראל ותקהל העדה כאיש אחד למדן ועד באר שבע וארץ הגלעד אל יהוה המצפה׃
2And the chiefs of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.
2Les chefs de tout le peuple, toutes les tribus d'Israël, se présentèrent dans l'assemblée du peuple de Dieu: quatre cent mille hommes de pied, tirant l'épée.
2ויתיצבו פנות כל העם כל שבטי ישראל בקהל עם האלהים ארבע מאות אלף איש רגלי שלף חרב׃
3(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpah.) And the children of Israel said, Tell us, how was this wickedness brought to pass?
3Et les fils de Benjamin apprirent que les enfants d'Israël étaient montés à Mitspa. Les enfants d'Israël dirent: Parlez, comment ce crime a-t-il été commis?
3וישמעו בני בנימן כי עלו בני ישראל המצפה ויאמרו בני ישראל דברו איכה נהיתה הרעה הזאת׃
4And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was murdered, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.
4Alors le Lévite, le mari de la femme qui avait été tuée, prit la parole, et dit: J'étais arrivé, avec ma concubine, à Guibea de Benjamin, pour y passer la nuit.
4ויען האיש הלוי איש האשה הנרצחה ויאמר הגבעתה אשר לבנימן באתי אני ופילגשי ללון׃
5And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about me by night; me they thought to have slain, and my concubine they forced, and she is dead.
5Les habitants de Guibea se sont soulevés contre moi, et ont entouré pendant la nuit la maison où j'étais. Ils avaient l'intention de me tuer, et ils ont fait violence à ma concubine, et elle est morte.
5ויקמו עלי בעלי הגבעה ויסבו עלי את הבית לילה אותי דמו להרג ואת פילגשי ענו ותמת׃
6And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.
6J'ai saisi ma concubine, et je l'ai coupée en morceaux, que j'ai envoyés dans tout le territoire de l'héritage d'Israël; car ils ont commis un crime et une infamie en Israël.
6ואחז בפילגשי ואנתחה ואשלחה בכל שדה נחלת ישראל כי עשו זמה ונבלה בישראל׃
7Behold, ye children of Israel, all of you, give here your advice and counsel.
7Vous voici tous, enfants d'Israël; consultez-vous, et prenez ici une décision!
7הנה כלכם בני ישראל הבו לכם דבר ועצה הלם׃
8And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn unto his house.
8Tout le peuple se leva comme un seul homme, en disant: Nul de nous n'ira dans sa tente, et personne ne retournera dans sa maison.
8ויקם כל העם כאיש אחד לאמר לא נלך איש לאהלו ולא נסור איש לביתו׃
9But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: [we will go up] against it by lot;
9Voici maintenant ce que nous ferons à Guibea: Nous marcherons contre elle d'après le sort.
9ועתה זה הדבר אשר נעשה לגבעה עליה בגורל׃
10and we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victuals for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.
10Nous prendrons dans toutes les tribus d'Israël dix hommes sur cent, cent sur mille, et mille sur dix mille; ils iront chercher des vivres pour le peuple, afin qu'à leur retour on traite Guibea de Benjamin selon toute l'infamie qu'elle a commise en Israël.
10ולקחנו עשרה אנשים למאה לכל שבטי ישראל ומאה לאלף ואלף לרבבה לקחת צדה לעם לעשות לבואם לגבע בנימן ככל הנבלה אשר עשה בישראל׃
11So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.
11Ainsi tous les hommes d'Israël s'assemblèrent contre la ville, unis comme un seul homme.
11ויאסף כל איש ישראל אל העיר כאיש אחד חברים׃
12And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is come to pass among you?
12Les tribus d'Israël envoyèrent des hommes vers toutes les familles de Benjamin, pour dire: Qu'est-ce que ce crime qui s'est commis parmi vous?
12וישלחו שבטי ישראל אנשים בכל שבטי בנימן לאמר מה הרעה הזאת אשר נהיתה בכם׃
13Now therefore deliver up the men, the base fellows, that are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel.
13Livrez maintenant les gens pervers qui sont à Guibea, afin que nous les fassions mourir et que nous ôtions le mal du milieu d'Israël. Mais les Benjamites ne voulurent point écouter la voix de leurs frères, les enfants d'Israël.
13ועתה תנו את האנשים בני בליעל אשר בגבעה ונמיתם ונבערה רעה מישראל ולא אבו בנימן לשמע בקול אחיהם בני ישראל׃
14And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.
14Les Benjamites sortirent de leurs villes, et s'assemblèrent à Guibea, pour combattre les enfants d'Israël.
14ויאספו בני בנימן מן הערים הגבעתה לצאת למלחמה עם בני ישראל׃
15And the children of Benjamin were numbered on that day out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who were numbered seven hundred chosen men.
15Le dénombrement que l'on fit en ce jour des Benjamites sortis des villes fut de vingt-six mille hommes, tirant l'épée, sans compter les habitants de Guibea formant sept cents hommes d'élite.
15ויתפקדו בני בנימן ביום ההוא מהערים עשרים וששה אלף איש שלף חרב לבד מישבי הגבעה התפקדו שבע מאות איש בחור׃
16Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at a hair-breadth, and not miss.
16Parmi tout ce peuple, il y avait sept cents hommes d'élite qui ne se servaient pas de la main droite; tous ceux-là pouvaient, en lançant une pierre avec la fronde, viser à un cheveu sans le manquer.
16מכל העם הזה שבע מאות איש בחור אטר יד ימינו כל זה קלע באבן אל השערה ולא יחטא׃
17And the men of Israel, besides Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.
17On fit aussi le dénombrement des hommes d'Israël, non compris ceux de Benjamin, et l'on en trouva quatre cent mille tirant l'épée, tous gens de guerre.
17ואיש ישראל התפקדו לבד מבנימן ארבע מאות אלף איש שלף חרב כל זה איש מלחמה׃
18And the children of Israel arose, and went up to Beth-el, and asked counsel of God; and they said, Who shall go up for us first to battle against the children of Benjamin? And Jehovah said, Judah [shall go up] first.
18Et les enfants d'Israël se levèrent, montèrent à Béthel, et consultèrent Dieu, en disant: Qui de nous montera le premier pour combattre les fils de Benjamin? l'Eternel répondit: Juda montera le premier.
18ויקמו ויעלו בית אל וישאלו באלהים ויאמרו בני ישראל מי יעלה לנו בתחלה למלחמה עם בני בנימן ויאמר יהוה יהודה בתחלה׃
19And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.
19Dès le matin, les enfants d'Israël se mirent en marche, et ils campèrent près de Guibea.
19ויקומו בני ישראל בבקר ויחנו על הגבעה׃
20And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel set the battle in array against them at Gibeah.
20Et les hommes d'Israël s'avancèrent pour combattre ceux de Benjamin, et ils se rangèrent en bataille contre eux devant Guibea.
20ויצא איש ישראל למלחמה עם בנימן ויערכו אתם איש ישראל מלחמה אל הגבעה׃
21And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites on that day twenty and two thousand men.
21Les fils de Benjamin sortirent de Guibea, et ils étendirent sur le sol ce jour-là vingt-deux mille hommes d'Israël.
21ויצאו בני בנימן מן הגבעה וישחיתו בישראל ביום ההוא שנים ועשרים אלף איש ארצה׃
22And the people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves, and set the battle again in array in the place where they set themselves in array the first day.
22Le peuple, les hommes d'Israël reprirent courage, et ils se rangèrent de nouveau en bataille dans le lieu où ils s'étaient placés le premier jour.
22ויתחזק העם איש ישראל ויספו לערך מלחמה במקום אשר ערכו שם ביום הראשון׃
23And the children of Israel went up and wept before Jehovah until even; and they asked of Jehovah, saying, Shall I again draw nigh to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And Jehovah said, Go up against him.
23Et les enfants d'Israël montèrent, et ils pleurèrent devant l'Eternel jusqu'au soir; ils consultèrent l'Eternel, en disant: Dois-je m'avancer encore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin, mon frère? L'Eternel répondit: Montez contre lui.
23ויעלו בני ישראל ויבכו לפני יהוה עד הערב וישאלו ביהוה לאמר האוסיף לגשת למלחמה עם בני בנימן אחי ויאמר יהוה עלו אליו׃
24And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.
24Les enfants d'Israël s'avancèrent contre les fils de Benjamin, le second jour.
24ויקרבו בני ישראל אל בני בנימן ביום השני׃
25And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
25Et ce même jour, les Benjamites sortirent de Guibea à leur rencontre, et ils étendirent encore sur le sol dix-huit mille hommes des enfants d'Israël, tous tirant l'épée.
25ויצא בנימן לקראתם מן הגבעה ביום השני וישחיתו בבני ישראל עוד שמנת עשר אלף איש ארצה כל אלה שלפי חרב׃
26Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto Beth-el, and wept, and sat there before Jehovah, and fasted that day until even; and they offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before Jehovah.
26Tous les enfants d'Israël et tout le peuple montèrent et vinrent à Béthel; ils pleurèrent et restèrent là devant l'Eternel, ils jeûnèrent en ce jour jusqu'au soir, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices d'actions de grâces devant l'Eternel.
26ויעלו כל בני ישראל וכל העם ויבאו בית אל ויבכו וישבו שם לפני יהוה ויצומו ביום ההוא עד הערב ויעלו עלות ושלמים לפני יהוה׃
27And the children of Israel asked of Jehovah (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
27Et les enfants d'Israël consultèrent l'Eternel, -c'était là que se trouvait alors l'arche de l'alliance de Dieu,
27וישאלו בני ישראל ביהוה ושם ארון ברית האלהים בימים ההם׃
28and Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And Jehovah said, Go up; for to-morrow I will deliver him into thy hand.
28et c'était Phinées, fils d'Eléazar, fils d'Aaron, qui se tenait à cette époque en présence de Dieu, -et ils dirent: Dois-je marcher encore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin, mon frère, ou dois-je m'en abstenir? L'Eternel répondit: Montez, car demain je les livrerai entre vos mains.
28ופינחס בן אלעזר בן אהרן עמד לפניו בימים ההם לאמר האוסף עוד לצאת למלחמה עם בני בנימן אחי אם אחדל ויאמר יהוה עלו כי מחר אתננו בידך׃
29And Israel set liers-in-wait against Gibeah round about.
29Alors Israël plaça une embuscade autour de Guibea.
29וישם ישראל ארבים אל הגבעה סביב׃
30And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and set themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.
30Les enfants d'Israël montèrent contre les fils de Benjamin, le troisième jour, et ils se rangèrent en bataille devant Guibea, comme les autres fois.
30ויעלו בני ישראל אל בני בנימן ביום השלישי ויערכו אל הגבעה כפעם בפעם׃
31And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite and kill of the people, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to Beth-el, and the other to Gibeah, in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
31Et les fils de Benjamin sortirent à la rencontre du peuple, et ils se laissèrent attirer loin de la ville. Ils commencèrent à frapper à mort parmi le peuple comme les autres fois, sur les routes dont l'une monte à Béthel et l'autre à Guibea par la campagne, et ils tuèrent environ trente hommes d'Israël.
31ויצאו בני בנימן לקראת העם הנתקו מן העיר ויחלו להכות מהעם חללים כפעם בפעם במסלות אשר אחת עלה בית אל ואחת גבעתה בשדה כשלשים איש בישראל׃
32And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them away from the city unto the highways.
32Les fils de Benjamin disaient: Les voilà battus devant nous comme auparavant! Mais les enfants d'Israël disaient: Fuyons, et attirons-les loin de la ville dans les chemins.
32ויאמרו בני בנימן נגפים הם לפנינו כבראשנה ובני ישראל אמרו ננוסה ונתקנהו מן העיר אל המסלות׃
33And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and set themselves in array at Baal-tamar: and the liers-in-wait of Israel brake forth out of their place, even out of Maareh-geba.
33Tous les hommes d'Israël quittèrent leur position, et se rangèrent à Baal-Thamar; et l'embuscade d'Israël s'élança du lieu où elle était, de Maaré-Guibea.
33וכל איש ישראל קמו ממקומו ויערכו בבעל תמר וארב ישראל מגיח ממקמו ממערה גבע׃
34And there came over against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore; but they knew not that evil was close upon them.
34Dix mille hommes choisis sur tout Israël arrivèrent devant Guibea. Le combat fut rude, et les Benjamites ne se doutaient pas du désastre qu'ils allaient éprouver.
34ויבאו מנגד לגבעה עשרת אלפים איש בחור מכל ישראל והמלחמה כבדה והם לא ידעו כי נגעת עליהם הרעה׃
35And Jehovah smote Benjamin before Israel; and the children of Israel destroyed of Benjamin that day twenty and five thousand and a hundred men: all these drew the sword.
35L'Eternel battit Benjamin devant Israël, et les enfants d'Israël tuèrent ce jour-là vingt-cinq mille et cent hommes de Benjamin, tous tirant l'épée.
35ויגף יהוה את בנימן לפני ישראל וישחיתו בני ישראל בבנימן ביום ההוא עשרים וחמשה אלף ומאה איש כל אלה שלף חרב׃
36So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten; for the men of Israel gave place to Benjamin, because they trusted unto the liers-in-wait whom they had set against Gibeah.
36Les fils de Benjamin regardaient comme battus les hommes d'Israël, qui cédaient du terrain à Benjamin et se reposaient sur l'embuscade qu'ils avaient placée contre Guibea.
36ויראו בני בנימן כי נגפו ויתנו איש ישראל מקום לבנימן כי בטחו אל הארב אשר שמו אל הגבעה׃
37And the liers-in-wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers-in-wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.
37Les gens en embuscade se jetèrent promptement sur Guibea, ils se portèrent en avant et frappèrent toute la ville du tranchant de l'épée.
37והארב החישו ויפשטו אל הגבעה וימשך הארב ויך את כל העיר לפי חרב׃
38Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers-in-wait was, that they should make a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city.
38Suivant un signal convenu avec les hommes d'Israël, ceux de l'embuscade devaient faire monter de la ville une épaisse fumée.
38והמועד היה לאיש ישראל עם הארב הרב להעלותם משאת העשן מן העיר׃
39And the men of Israel turned in the battle, and Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons; for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.
39Les hommes d'Israël firent alors volte-face dans la bataille. Les Benjamites leur avaient tué déjà environ trente hommes, et ils disaient: Certainement les voilà battus devant nous comme dans le premier combat!
39ויהפך איש ישראל במלחמה ובנימן החל להכות חללים באיש ישראל כשלשים איש כי אמרו אך נגוף נגף הוא לפנינו כמלחמה הראשנה׃
40But when the cloud began to arise up out of the city in a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them; and, behold, the whole of the city went up [in smoke] to heaven.
40Cependant une épaisse colonne de fumée commençait à s'élever de la ville. Les Benjamites regardèrent derrière eux; et voici, de la ville entière les flammes montaient vers le ciel.
40והמשאת החלה לעלות מן העיר עמוד עשן ויפן בנימן אחריו והנה עלה כליל העיר השמימה׃
41And the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed; for they saw that evil was come upon them.
41Les hommes d'Israël avaient fait volte-face; et ceux de Benjamin furent épouvantés, en voyant le désastre qui allait les atteindre.
41ואיש ישראל הפך ויבהל איש בנימן כי ראה כי נגעה עליו הרעה׃
42Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle followed hard after them; and they that came out of the cities destroyed them in the midst thereof.
42Ils tournèrent le dos devant les hommes d'Israël, et s'enfuirent par le chemin du désert. Mais les assaillants s'attachèrent à leurs pas, et ils détruisirent pendant le trajet ceux qui étaient sortis des villes.
42ויפנו לפני איש ישראל אל דרך המדבר והמלחמה הדביקתהו ואשר מהערים משחיתים אותו בתוכו׃
43They inclosed the Benjamites round about, [and] chased them, [and] trod them down at [their] resting-place, as far as over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.
43Ils enveloppèrent Benjamin, le poursuivirent, l'écrasèrent dès qu'il voulait se reposer, jusqu'en face de Guibea du côté du soleil levant.
43כתרו את בנימן הרדיפהו מנוחה הדריכהו עד נכח הגבעה ממזרח שמש׃
44And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these [were] men of valor.
44Il tomba dix-huit mille hommes de Benjamin, tous vaillants.
44ויפלו מבנימן שמנה עשר אלף איש את כל אלה אנשי חיל׃
45And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men, and followed hard after them unto Gidom, and smote of them two thousand men.
45Parmi ceux qui tournèrent le dos pour s'enfuir vers le désert au rocher de Rimmon, les hommes d'Israël en firent périr cinq mille sur les routes; ils les poursuivirent jusqu'à Guideom, et ils en tuèrent deux mille.
45ויפנו וינסו המדברה אל סלע הרמון ויעללהו במסלות חמשת אלפים איש וידביקו אחריו עד גדעם ויכו ממנו אלפים איש׃
46So that all who fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these [were] men of valor.
46Le nombre total des Benjamites qui périrent ce jour-là fut de vingt-cinq mille hommes tirant l'épée, tous vaillants.
46ויהי כל הנפלים מבנימן עשרים וחמשה אלף איש שלף חרב ביום ההוא את כל אלה אנשי חיל׃
47But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon, and abode in the rock of Rimmon four months.
47Six cents hommes, qui avaient tourné le dos et qui s'étaient enfuis vers le désert au rocher de Rimmon, demeurèrent là pendant quatre mois.
47ויפנו וינסו המדברה אל סלע הרמון שש מאות איש וישבו בסלע רמון ארבעה חדשים׃
48And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city, and the cattle, and all that they found: moreover all the cities which they found they set on fire.
48Les hommes d'Israël revinrent vers les fils de Benjamin, et ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, depuis les hommes des villes jusqu'au bétail, et tout ce que l'on trouva. Ils mirent aussi le feu à toutes les villes qui existaient.
48ואיש ישראל שבו אל בני בנימן ויכום לפי חרב מעיר מתם עד בהמה עד כל הנמצא גם כל הערים הנמצאות שלחו באש׃
