1Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod: and the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
1Jerubbaal, qui est Gédéon, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, se levèrent de bon matin, et campèrent près de la source de Harod. Le camp de Madian était au nord de Gédéon, vers la colline de Moré, dans la vallée.
1וישכם ירבעל הוא גדעון וכל העם אשר אתו ויחנו על עין חרד ומחנה מדין היה לו מצפון מגבעת המורה בעמק׃
2And Jehovah said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.
2L'Eternel dit à Gédéon: Le peuple que tu as avec toi est trop nombreux pour que je livre Madian entre ses mains; il pourrait en tirer gloire contre moi, et dire: C'est ma main qui m'a délivré.
2ויאמר יהוה אל גדעון רב העם אשר אתך מתתי את מדין בידם פן יתפאר עלי ישראל לאמר ידי הושיעה לי׃
3Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
3Publie donc ceci aux oreilles du peuple: Que celui qui est craintif et qui a peur s'en retourne et s'éloigne de la montagne de Galaad. Vingt-deux mille hommes parmi le peuple s'en retournèrent, et il en resta dix mille.
3ועתה קרא נא באזני העם לאמר מי ירא וחרד ישב ויצפר מהר הגלעד וישב מן העם עשרים ושנים אלף ועשרת אלפים נשארו׃
4And Jehovah said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
4L'Eternel dit à Gédéon: Le peuple est encore trop nombreux. Fais-les descendre vers l'eau, et là je t'en ferai le triage; celui dont je te dirai: Que celui-ci aille avec toi, ira avec toi; et celui dont je te dirai: Que celui-ci n'aille pas avec toi, n'ira pas avec toi.
4ויאמר יהוה אל גדעון עוד העם רב הורד אותם אל המים ואצרפנו לך שם והיה אשר אמר אליך זה ילך אתך הוא ילך אתך וכל אשר אמר אליך זה לא ילך עמך הוא לא ילך׃
5So he brought down the people unto the water: and Jehovah said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
5Gédéon fit descendre le peuple vers l'eau, et l'Eternel dit à Gédéon: Tous ceux qui laperont l'eau avec la langue comme lape le chien, tu les sépareras de tous ceux qui se mettront à genoux pour boire.
5ויורד את העם אל המים ויאמר יהוה אל גדעון כל אשר ילק בלשונו מן המים כאשר ילק הכלב תציג אותו לבד וכל אשר יכרע על ברכיו לשתות׃
6And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
6Ceux qui lapèrent l'eau en la portant à la bouche avec leur main furent au nombre de trois cents hommes, et tout le reste du peuple se mit à genoux pour boire.
6ויהי מספר המלקקים בידם אל פיהם שלש מאות איש וכל יתר העם כרעו על ברכיהם לשתות מים׃
7And Jehovah said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand; and let all the people go every man unto his place.
7Et l'Eternel dit à Gédéon: C'est par les trois cents hommes qui ont lapé, que je vous sauverai et que je livrerai Madian entre tes mains. Que tout le reste du peuple s'en aille chacun chez soi.
7ויאמר יהוה אל גדעון בשלש מאות האיש המלקקים אושיע אתכם ונתתי את מדין בידך וכל העם ילכו איש למקמו׃
8So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man unto his tent, but retained the three hundred men: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
8On prit les vivres du peuple et ses trompettes. Puis Gédéon renvoya tous les hommes d'Israël chacun dans sa tente, et il retint les trois cents hommes. Le camp de Madian était au-dessous de lui dans la vallée.
8ויקחו את צדה העם בידם ואת שופרתיהם ואת כל איש ישראל שלח איש לאהליו ובשלש מאות האיש החזיק ומחנה מדין היה לו מתחת בעמק׃
9And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Arise, get thee down into the camp; for I have delivered it into thy hand.
9L'Eternel dit à Gédéon pendant la nuit: Lève-toi, descends au camp, car je l'ai livré entre tes mains.
9ויהי בלילה ההוא ויאמר אליו יהוה קום רד במחנה כי נתתיו בידך׃
10But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Purah thy servant down to the camp:
10Si tu crains de descendre, descends-y avec Pura, ton serviteur.
10ואם ירא אתה לרדת רד אתה ופרה נערך אל המחנה׃
11and thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thy hands be strengthened to go down into the camp. Then went he down with Purah his servant unto the outermost part of the armed men that were in the camp.
11Tu écouteras ce qu'ils diront, et après cela tes mains seront fortifiées: descends donc au camp. Il descendit avec Pura, son serviteur, jusqu'aux avant-postes du camp.
11ושמעת מה ידברו ואחר תחזקנה ידיך וירדת במחנה וירד הוא ופרה נערו אל קצה החמשים אשר במחנה׃
12And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is upon the sea-shore for multitude.
12Madian, Amalek, et tous les fils de l'Orient, étaient répandus dans la vallée comme une multitude de sauterelles, et leurs chameaux étaient innombrables comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer.
12ומדין ועמלק וכל בני קדם נפלים בעמק כארבה לרב ולגמליהם אין מספר כחול שעל שפת הים לרב׃
13And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man telling a dream unto his fellow; and he said, Behold, I dreamed a dream; and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came unto the tent, and smote it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.
13Gédéon arriva; et voici, un homme racontait à son camarade un songe. Il disait: J'ai eu un songe; et voici, un gâteau de pain d'orge roulait dans le camp de Madian; il est venu heurter jusqu'à la tente, et elle est tombée; il l'a retournée sens dessus dessous, et elle a été renversée.
13ויבא גדעון והנה איש מספר לרעהו חלום ויאמר הנה חלום חלמתי והנה צלול לחם שערים מתהפך במחנה מדין ויבא עד האהל ויכהו ויפל ויהפכהו למעלה ונפל האהל׃
14And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: into his hand God hath delivered Midian, and all the host.
14Son camarade répondit, et dit: Ce n'est pas autre chose que l'épée de Gédéon, fils de Joas, homme d'Israël; Dieu a livré entre ses mains Madian et tout le camp.
14ויען רעהו ויאמר אין זאת בלתי אם חרב גדעון בן יואש איש ישראל נתן האלהים בידו את מדין ואת כל המחנה׃
15And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped; and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, Arise; for Jehovah hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
15Lorsque Gédéon eut entendu le récit du songe et son explication, il se prosterna, revint au camp d'Israël, et dit: Levez-vous, car l'Eternel a livré entre vos mains le camp de Madian.
15ויהי כשמע גדעון את מספר החלום ואת שברו וישתחו וישב אל מחנה ישראל ויאמר קומו כי נתן יהוה בידכם את מחנה מדין׃
16And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers.
16Il divisa en trois corps les trois cents hommes, et il leur remit à tous des trompettes et des cruches vides, avec des flambeaux dans les cruches.
16ויחץ את שלש מאות האיש שלשה ראשים ויתן שופרות ביד כלם וכדים רקים ולפדים בתוך הכדים׃
17And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.
17Il leur dit: Vous me regarderez et vous ferez comme moi. Dès que j'aborderai le camp, vous ferez ce que je ferai;
17ויאמר אליהם ממני תראו וכן תעשו והנה אנכי בא בקצה המחנה והיה כאשר אעשה כן תעשון׃
18When I blow the trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, For Jehovah and for Gideon.
18et quand je sonnerai de la trompette, moi et tous ceux qui seront avec moi, vous sonnerez aussi de la trompette tout autour du camp, et vous direz: Pour l'Eternel et pour Gédéon!
18ותקעתי בשופר אנכי וכל אשר אתי ותקעתם בשופרות גם אתם סביבות כל המחנה ואמרתם ליהוה ולגדעון׃
19So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.
19Gédéon et les cent hommes qui étaient avec lui arrivèrent aux abords du camp au commencement de la veille du milieu, comme on venait de placer les gardes. Ils sonnèrent de la trompette, et brisèrent les cruches qu'ils avaient à la main.
19ויבא גדעון ומאה איש אשר אתו בקצה המחנה ראש האשמרת התיכונה אך הקם הקימו את השמרים ויתקעו בשופרות ונפוץ הכדים אשר בידם׃
20And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands wherewith to blow; and they cried, The sword of Jehovah and of Gideon.
20Les trois corps sonnèrent de la trompette, et brisèrent les cruches; ils saisirent de la main gauche les flambeaux et de la main droite les trompettes pour sonner, et ils s'écrièrent: Epée pour l'Eternel et pour Gédéon!
20ויתקעו שלשת הראשים בשופרות וישברו הכדים ויחזיקו ביד שמאולם בלפדים וביד ימינם השופרות לתקוע ויקראו חרב ליהוה ולגדעון׃
21And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran; and they shouted, and put [them] to flight.
21Ils restèrent chacun à sa place autour du camp, et tout le camp se mit à courir, à pousser des cris, et à prendre la fuite.
21ויעמדו איש תחתיו סביב למחנה וירץ כל המחנה ויריעו ויניסו׃
22And they blew the three hundred trumpets, and Jehovah set every man's sword against his fellow, and against all the host; and the host fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.
22Les trois cents hommes sonnèrent encore de la trompette; et, dans tout le camp, l'Eternel leur fit tourner l'épée les uns contre les autres. Le camp s'enfuit jusqu'à Beth-Schitta vers Tseréra, jusqu'au bord d'Abel-Mehola près de Tabbath.
22ויתקעו שלש מאות השופרות וישם יהוה את חרב איש ברעהו ובכל המחנה וינס המחנה עד בית השטה צררתה עד שפת אבל מחולה על טבת׃
23And the men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian.
23Les hommes d'Israël se rassemblèrent, ceux de Nephthali, d'Aser et de tout Manassé, et ils poursuivirent Madian.
23ויצעק איש ישראל מנפתלי ומן אשר ומן כל מנשה וירדפו אחרי מדין׃
24And Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill-country of Ephraim, saying, Come down against Midian, and take before them the waters, as far as Beth-barah, even the Jordan. So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth-barah, even the Jordan.
24Gédéon envoya des messagers dans toute la montagne d'Ephraïm, pour dire: Descendez à la rencontre de Madian, et coupez-leur le passage des eaux jusqu'à Beth-Bara et celui du Jourdain. Tous les hommes d'Ephraïm se rassemblèrent et ils s'emparèrent du passage des eaux jusqu'à Beth-Bara et de celui du Jourdain.
24ומלאכים שלח גדעון בכל הר אפרים לאמר רדו לקראת מדין ולכדו להם את המים עד בית ברה ואת הירדן ויצעק כל איש אפרים וילכדו את המים עד בית ברה ואת הירדן׃
25And they took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.
25Ils saisirent deux chefs de Madian, Oreb et Zeeb; ils tuèrent Oreb au rocher d'Oreb, et ils tuèrent Zeeb au pressoir de Zeeb. Ils poursuivirent Madian, et ils apportèrent les têtes d'Oreb et de Zeeb à Gédéon de l'autre côté du Jourdain.
25וילכדו שני שרי מדין את ערב ואת זאב ויהרגו את עורב בצור עורב ואת זאב הרגו ביקב זאב וירדפו אל מדין וראש ערב וזאב הביאו אל גדעון מעבר לירדן׃
