¹And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

¹Les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel; et l'Eternel les livra entre les mains de Madian, pendant sept ans.

¹ויעשו בני ישראל הרע בעיני יהוה ויתנם יהוה ביד מדין שבע שנים׃

²And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

²La main de Madian fut puissante contre Israël. Pour échapper à Madian, les enfants d'Israël se retiraient dans les ravins des montagnes, dans les cavernes et sur les rochers fortifiés.

²ותעז יד מדין על ישראל מפני מדין עשו להם בני ישראל את המנהרות אשר בהרים ואת המערות ואת המצדות׃

³And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

³Quand Israël avait semé, Madian montait avec Amalek et les fils de l'Orient, et ils marchaient contre lui.

³והיה אם זרע ישראל ועלה מדין ועמלק ובני קדם ועלו עליו׃

⁴and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

⁴Ils campaient en face de lui, détruisaient les productions du pays jusque vers Gaza, et ne laissaient en Israël ni vivres, ni brebis, ni boeufs, ni ânes.

⁴ויחנו עליהם וישחיתו את יבול הארץ עד בואך עזה ולא ישאירו מחיה בישראל ושה ושור וחמור׃

⁵For they came up with their cattle and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.

⁵Car ils montaient avec leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes, ils arrivaient comme une multitude de sauterelles, ils étaient innombrables, eux et leurs chameaux, et ils venaient dans le pays pour le ravager.

⁵כי הם ומקניהם יעלו ואהליהם יבאו כדי ארבה לרב ולהם ולגמליהם אין מספר ויבאו בארץ לשחתה׃

⁶And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah.

⁶Israël fut très malheureux à cause de Madian, et les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Eternel.

⁶וידל ישראל מאד מפני מדין ויזעקו בני ישראל אל יהוה׃

⁷And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah because of Midian,

⁷Lorsque les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Eternel au sujet de Madian,

⁷ויהי כי זעקו בני ישראל אל יהוה על אדות מדין׃

⁸that Jehovah sent a prophet unto the children of Israel: and he said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

⁸l'Eternel envoya un prophète aux enfants d'Israël. Il leur dit: Ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Je vous ai fait monter d'Egypte, et je vous ai fait sortir de la maison de servitude.

⁸וישלח יהוה איש נביא אל בני ישראל ויאמר להם כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל אנכי העליתי אתכם ממצרים ואציא אתכם מבית עבדים׃

⁹and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;

⁹Je vous ai délivrés de la main des Egyptiens et de la main de tous ceux qui vous opprimaient; je les ai chassés devant vous, et je vous ai donné leur pays.

⁹ואצל אתכם מיד מצרים ומיד כל לחציכם ואגרש אותם מפניכם ואתנה לכם את ארצם׃

¹⁰and I said unto you, I am Jehovah your God; ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice.

¹⁰Je vous ai dit: Je suis l'Eternel, votre Dieu; vous ne craindrez point les dieux des Amoréens, dans le pays desquels vous habitez. Mais vous n'avez point écouté ma voix.

¹⁰ואמרה לכם אני יהוה אלהיכם לא תיראו את אלהי האמרי אשר אתם יושבים בארצם ולא שמעתם בקולי׃

¹¹And the angel of Jehovah came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

¹¹Puis vint l'ange de l'Eternel, et il s'assit sous le térébinthe d'Ophra, qui appartenait à Joas, de la famille d'Abiézer. Gédéon, son fils, battait du froment au pressoir, pour le mettre à l'abri de Madian.

¹¹ויבא מלאך יהוה וישב תחת האלה אשר בעפרה אשר ליואש אבי העזרי וגדעון בנו חבט חטים בגת להניס מפני מדין׃

¹²And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him, and said unto him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valor.

¹²L'ange de l'Eternel lui apparut, et lui dit: L'Eternel est avec toi, vaillant héros!

¹²וירא אליו מלאך יהוה ויאמר אליו יהוה עמך גבור החיל׃

¹³And Gideon said unto him, Oh, my lord, if Jehovah is with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? but now Jehovah hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.

¹³Gédéon lui dit: Ah! mon seigneur, si l'Eternel est avec nous, pourquoi toutes ces choses nous sont-elles arrivées? Et où sont tous ces prodiges que nos pères nous racontent, quand ils disent: L'Eternel ne nous a-t-il pas fait monter hors d'Egypte? Maintenant l'Eternel nous abandonne, et il nous livre entre les mains de Madian!

¹³ויאמר אליו גדעון בי אדני ויש יהוה עמנו ולמה מצאתנו כל זאת ואיה כל נפלאתיו אשר ספרו לנו אבותינו לאמר הלא ממצרים העלנו יהוה ועתה נטשנו יהוה ויתננו בכף מדין׃

¹⁴And Jehovah looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian: have not I sent thee?

¹⁴L'Eternel se tourna vers lui, et dit: Va avec cette force que tu as, et délivre Israël de la main de Madian; n'est-ce pas moi qui t'envoie?

¹⁴ויפן אליו יהוה ויאמר לך בכחך זה והושעת את ישראל מכף מדין הלא שלחתיך׃

¹⁵And he said unto him, Oh, Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.

¹⁵Gédéon lui dit: Ah! mon seigneur, avec quoi délivrerai-je Israël? Voici, ma famille est la plus pauvre en Manassé, et je suis le plus petit dans la maison de mon père.

¹⁵ויאמר אליו בי אדני במה אושיע את ישראל הנה אלפי הדל במנשה ואנכי הצעיר בבית אבי׃

¹⁶And Jehovah said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

¹⁶L'Eternel lui dit: Mais je serai avec toi, et tu battras Madian comme un seul homme.

¹⁶ויאמר אליו יהוה כי אהיה עמך והכית את מדין כאיש אחד׃

¹⁷And he said unto him, If now I have found favor in thy sight, then show me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me.

¹⁷Gédéon lui dit: Si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, donne-moi un signe pour montrer que c'est toi qui me parles.

¹⁷ויאמר אליו אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך ועשית לי אות שאתה מדבר עמי׃

¹⁸Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

¹⁸Ne t'éloigne point d'ici jusqu'à ce que je revienne auprès de toi, que j'apporte mon offrande, et que je la dépose devant toi. Et l'Eternel dit: Je resterai jusqu'à ce que tu reviennes.

¹⁸אל נא תמש מזה עד באי אליך והצאתי את מנחתי והנחתי לפניך ויאמר אנכי אשב עד שובך׃

¹⁹And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

¹⁹Gédéon entra, prépara un chevreau, et fit avec un épha de farine des pains sans levain. Il mit la chair dans un panier et le jus dans un pot, les lui apporta sous le térébinthe, et les présenta.

¹⁹וגדעון בא ויעש גדי עזים ואיפת קמח מצות הבשר שם בסל והמרק שם בפרור ויוצא אליו אל תחת האלה ויגש׃

²⁰And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

²⁰L'ange de Dieu lui dit: Prends la chair et les pains sans levain, pose-les sur ce rocher, et répands le jus. Et il fit ainsi.

²⁰ויאמר אליו מלאך האלהים קח את הבשר ואת המצות והנח אל הסלע הלז ואת המרק שפוך ויעש כן׃

²¹Then the angel of Jehovah put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Jehovah departed out of his sight.

²¹L'ange de l'Eternel avança l'extrémité du bâton qu'il avait à la main, et toucha la chair et les pains sans levain. Alors il s'éleva du rocher un feu qui consuma la chair et les pains sans levain. Et l'ange de l'Eternel disparut à ses yeux.

²¹וישלח מלאך יהוה את קצה המשענת אשר בידו ויגע בבשר ובמצות ותעל האש מן הצור ותאכל את הבשר ואת המצות ומלאך יהוה הלך מעיניו׃

²²And Gideon saw that he was the angel of Jehovah; and Gideon said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of Jehovah face to face.

²²Gédéon, voyant que c'était l'ange de l'Eternel, dit: Malheur à moi, Seigneur Eternel! car j'ai vu l'ange de l'Eternel face à face.

²²וירא גדעון כי מלאך יהוה הוא ויאמר גדעון אהה אדני יהוה כי על כן ראיתי מלאך יהוה פנים אל פנים׃

²³And Jehovah said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

²³Et l'Eternel lui dit: Sois en paix, ne crains point, tu ne mourras pas.

²³ויאמר לו יהוה שלום לך אל תירא לא תמות׃

²⁴Then Gideon built an altar there unto Jehovah, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

²⁴Gédéon bâtit là un autel à l'Eternel, et lui donna pour nom l'Eternel paix: il existe encore aujourd'hui à Ophra, qui appartenait à la famille d'Abiézer.

²⁴ויבן שם גדעון מזבח ליהוה ויקרא לו יהוה שלום עד היום הזה עודנו בעפרת אבי העזרי׃

²⁵And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Take thy father's bullock, even the second bullock seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;

²⁵Dans la même nuit, l'Eternel dit à Gédéon: Prends le jeune taureau de ton père, et un second taureau de sept ans. Renverse l'autel de Baal qui est à ton père, et abats le pieu sacré qui est dessus.

²⁵ויהי בלילה ההוא ויאמר לו יהוה קח את פר השור אשר לאביך ופר השני שבע שנים והרסת את מזבח הבעל אשר לאביך ואת האשרה אשר עליו תכרת׃

²⁶and build an altar unto Jehovah thy God upon the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which thou shalt cut down.

²⁶Tu bâtiras ensuite et tu disposeras, sur le haut de ce rocher, un autel à l'Eternel ton Dieu. Tu prendras le second taureau, et tu offriras un holocauste, avec le bois de l'idole que tu auras abattue.

²⁶ובנית מזבח ליהוה אלהיך על ראש המעוז הזה במערכה ולקחת את הפר השני והעלית עולה בעצי האשרה אשר תכרת׃

²⁷Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Jehovah had spoken unto him: and it came to pass, because he feared his father's household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

²⁷Gédéon prit dix hommes parmi ses serviteurs, et fit ce que l'Eternel avait dit; mais, comme il craignait la maison de son père et les gens de la ville, il l'exécuta de nuit, et non de jour.

²⁷ויקח גדעון עשרה אנשים מעבדיו ויעש כאשר דבר אליו יהוה ויהי כאשר ירא את בית אביו ואת אנשי העיר מעשות יומם ויעש לילה׃

²⁸And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

²⁸Lorsque les gens de la ville se furent levés de bon matin, voici, l'autel de Baal était renversé, le pieu sacré placé dessus était abattu, et le second taureau était offert en holocauste sur l'autel qui avait été bâti.

²⁸וישכימו אנשי העיר בבקר והנה נתץ מזבח הבעל והאשרה אשר עליו כרתה ואת הפר השני העלה על המזבח הבנוי׃

²⁹And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

²⁹Ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: Qui a fait cela? Et ils s'informèrent et firent des recherches. On leur dit: C'est Gédéon, fils de Joas, qui a fait cela.

²⁹ויאמרו איש אל רעהו מי עשה הדבר הזה וידרשו ויבקשו ויאמרו גדעון בן יואש עשה הדבר הזה׃

³⁰Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the Asherah that was by it.

³⁰Alors les gens de la ville dirent à Joas: Fais sortir ton fils, et qu'il meure, car il a renversé l'autel de Baal et abattu le pieu sacré qui était dessus.

³⁰ויאמרו אנשי העיר אל יואש הוצא את בנך וימת כי נתץ את מזבח הבעל וכי כרת האשרה אשר עליו׃

³¹And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye contend for Baal? Or will ye save him? he that will contend for him, let him be put to death whilst [it is yet] morning: if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one hath broken down his altar.

³¹Joas répondit à tous ceux qui se présentèrent à lui: Est-ce à vous de prendre parti pour Baal? est-ce à vous de venir à son secours? Quiconque prendra parti pour Baal mourra avant que le matin vienne. Si Baal est un dieu, qu'il plaide lui-même sa cause, puisqu'on a renversé son autel.

³¹ויאמר יואש לכל אשר עמדו עליו האתם תריבון לבעל אם אתם תושיעון אותו אשר יריב לו יומת עד הבקר אם אלהים הוא ירב לו כי נתץ את מזבחו׃

³²Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal contend against him, because he hath broken down his altar.

³²Et en ce jour l'on donna à Gédéon le nom de Jerubbaal, en disant: Que Baal plaide contre lui, puisqu'il a renversé son autel.

³²ויקרא לו ביום ההוא ירבעל לאמר ירב בו הבעל כי נתץ את מזבחו׃

³³Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

³³Tout Madian, Amalek et les fils de l'Orient, se rassemblèrent; ils passèrent le Jourdain, et campèrent dans la vallée de Jizréel.

³³וכל מדין ועמלק ובני קדם נאספו יחדו ויעברו ויחנו בעמק יזרעאל׃

³⁴But the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

³⁴Gédéon fut revêtu de l'esprit de l'Eternel; il sonna de la trompette, et Abiézer fut convoqué pour marcher à sa suite.

³⁴ורוח יהוה לבשה את גדעון ויתקע בשופר ויזעק אביעזר אחריו׃

³⁵And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

³⁵Il envoya des messagers dans tout Manassé, qui fut aussi convoqué pour marcher à sa suite. Il envoya des messagers dans Aser, dans Zabulon et dans Nephthali, qui montèrent à leur rencontre.

³⁵ומלאכים שלח בכל מנשה ויזעק גם הוא אחריו ומלאכים שלח באשר ובזבלון ובנפתלי ויעלו לקראתם׃

³⁶And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken,

³⁶Gédéon dit à Dieu: Si tu veux délivrer Israël par ma main, comme tu l'as dit,

³⁶ויאמר גדעון אל האלהים אם ישך מושיע בידי את ישראל כאשר דברת׃

³⁷behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken.

³⁷voici, je vais mettre une toison de laine dans l'aire; si la toison seule se couvre de rosée et que tout le terrain reste sec, je connaîtrai que tu délivreras Israël par ma main, comme tu l'as dit.

³⁷הנה אנכי מציג את גזת הצמר בגרן אם טל יהיה על הגזה לבדה ועל כל הארץ חרב וידעתי כי תושיע בידי את ישראל כאשר דברת׃

³⁸And it was so; for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.

³⁸Et il arriva ainsi. Le jour suivant, il se leva de bon matin, pressa la toison, et en fit sortir la rosée, qui donna de l'eau plein une coupe.

³⁸ויהי כן וישכם ממחרת ויזר את הגזה וימץ טל מן הגזה מלוא הספל מים׃

³⁹And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me make trial, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

³⁹Gédéon dit à Dieu: Que ta colère ne s'enflamme point contre moi, et je ne parlerai plus que cette fois: Je voudrais seulement faire encore une épreuve avec la toison: que la toison seule reste sèche, et que tout le terrain se couvre de rosée.

³⁹ויאמר גדעון אל האלהים אל יחר אפך בי ואדברה אך הפעם אנסה נא רק הפעם בגזה יהי נא חרב אל הגזה לבדה ועל כל הארץ יהיה טל׃

⁴⁰And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

⁴⁰Et Dieu fit ainsi cette nuit-là. La toison seule resta sèche, et tout le terrain se couvrit de rosée.

⁴⁰ויעש אלהים כן בלילה ההוא ויהי חרב אל הגזה לבדה ועל כל הארץ היה טל׃
