¹And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, that I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been [beforetime] sad in his presence.

¹Au mois de Nisan, la vingtième année du roi Artaxerxès, comme le vin était devant lui, je pris le vin et je l'offris au roi. Jamais je n'avais paru triste en sa présence.

¹ויהי בחדש ניסן שנת עשרים לארתחשסתא המלך יין לפניו ואשא את היין ואתנה למלך ולא הייתי רע לפניו׃

²And the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid.

²Le roi me dit: Pourquoi as-tu mauvais visage? Tu n'es pourtant pas malade; ce ne peut être qu'un chagrin de coeur. Je fus saisi d'une grande crainte,

²ויאמר לי המלך מדוע פניך רעים ואתה אינך חולה אין זה כי אם רע לב ואירא הרבה מאד׃

³And I said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

³et je répondis au roi: Que le roi vive éternellement! Comment n'aurais-je pas mauvais visage, lorsque la ville où sont les sépulcres de mes pères est détruite et que ses portes sont consumées par le feu?

³ואמר למלך המלך לעולם יחיה מדוע לא ירעו פני אשר העיר בית קברות אבתי חרבה ושעריה אכלו באש׃

⁴Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

⁴Et le roi me dit: Que demandes-tu? Je priai le Dieu des cieux,

⁴ויאמר לי המלך על מה זה אתה מבקש ואתפלל אל אלהי השמים׃

⁵And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favor in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.

⁵et je répondis au roi: Si le roi le trouve bon, et si ton serviteur lui est agréable, envoie-moi en Juda, vers la ville des sépulcres de mes pères, pour que je la rebâtisse.

⁵ואמר למלך אם על המלך טוב ואם ייטב עבדך לפניך אשר תשלחני אל יהודה אל עיר קברות אבתי ואבננה׃

⁶And the king said unto me (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

⁶Le roi, auprès duquel la reine était assise, me dit alors: Combien ton voyage durera-t-il, et quand seras-tu de retour? Il plut au roi de me laisser partir, et je lui fixai un temps.

⁶ויאמר לי המלך והשגל יושבת אצלו עד מתי יהיה מהלכך ומתי תשוב וייטב לפני המלך וישלחני ואתנה לו זמן׃

⁷Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through till I come unto Judah;

⁷Puis je dis au roi: Si le roi le trouve bon, qu'on me donne des lettres pour les gouverneurs de l'autre côté du fleuve, afin qu'ils me laissent passer et entrer en Juda,

⁷ואומר למלך אם על המלך טוב אגרות יתנו לי על פחוות עבר הנהר אשר יעבירוני עד אשר אבוא אל יהודה׃

⁸and a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the castle which appertaineth to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

⁸et une lettre pour Asaph, garde forestier du roi, afin qu'il me fournisse du bois de charpente pour les portes de la citadelle près de la maison, pour la muraille de la ville, et pour la maison que j'occuperai. Le roi me donna ces lettres, car la bonne main de mon Dieu était sur moi.

⁸ואגרת אל אסף שמר הפרדס אשר למלך אשר יתן לי עצים לקרות את שערי הבירה אשר לבית ולחומת העיר ולבית אשר אבוא אליו ויתן לי המלך כיד אלהי הטובה עלי׃

⁹Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen.

⁹Je me rendis auprès des gouverneurs de l'autre côté du fleuve, et je leur remis les lettres du roi, qui m'avait fait accompagner par des chefs de l'armée et par des cavaliers.

⁹ואבוא אל פחוות עבר הנהר ואתנה להם את אגרות המלך וישלח עמי המלך שרי חיל ופרשים׃

¹⁰And when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, for that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

¹⁰Sanballat, le Horonite, et Tobija, le serviteur ammonite, l'ayant appris, eurent un grand déplaisir de ce qu'il venait un homme pour chercher le bien des enfants d'Israël.

¹⁰וישמע סנבלט החרני וטוביה העבד העמני וירע להם רעה גדלה אשר בא אדם לבקש טובה לבני ישראל׃

¹¹So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

¹¹J'arrivai à Jérusalem, et j'y passai trois jours.

¹¹ואבוא אל ירושלם ואהי שם ימים שלשה׃

¹²And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God put into my heart to do for Jerusalem; neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.

¹²Après quoi, je me levai pendant la nuit avec quelques hommes, sans avoir dit à personne ce que mon Dieu m'avait mis au coeur de faire pour Jérusalem. Il n'y avait avec moi d'autre bête de somme que ma propre monture.

¹²ואקום לילה אני ואנשים מעט עמי ולא הגדתי לאדם מה אלהי נתן אל לבי לעשות לירושלם ובהמה אין עמי כי אם הבהמה אשר אני רכב בה׃

¹³And I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the jackal's well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.

¹³Je sortis de nuit par la porte de la vallée, et je me dirigeai contre la source du dragon et vers la porte du fumier, considérant les murailles en ruines de Jérusalem et réfléchissant à ses portes consumées par le feu.

¹³ואצאה בשער הגיא לילה ואל פני עין התנין ואל שער האשפת ואהי שבר בחומת ירושלם אשר הם פרוצים ושעריה אכלו באש׃

¹⁴Then I went on to the fountain gate and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.

¹⁴Je passai près de la porte de la source et de l'étang du roi, et il n'y avait point de place par où pût passer la bête qui était sous moi.

¹⁴ואעבר אל שער העין ואל ברכת המלך ואין מקום לבהמה לעבר תחתי׃

¹⁵Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall; and I turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned.

¹⁵Je montai de nuit par le torrent, et je considérai encore la muraille. Puis je rentrai par la porte de la vallée, et je fus ainsi de retour.

¹⁵ואהי עלה בנחל לילה ואהי שבר בחומה ואשוב ואבוא בשער הגיא ואשוב׃

¹⁶And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.

¹⁶Les magistrats ignoraient où j'étais allé, et ce que je faisais. Jusqu'à ce moment, je n'avais rien dit aux Juifs, ni aux sacrificateurs, ni aux grands, ni aux magistrats, ni à aucun de ceux qui s'occupaient des affaires.

¹⁶והסגנים לא ידעו אנה הלכתי ומה אני עשה וליהודים ולכהנים ולחרים ולסגנים וליתר עשה המלאכה עד כן לא הגדתי׃

¹⁷Then said I unto them, Ye see the evil case that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.

¹⁷Je leur dis alors: Vous voyez le malheureux état où nous sommes! Jérusalem est détruite, et ses portes sont consumées par le feu! Venez, rebâtissons la muraille de Jérusalem, et nous ne serons plus dans l'opprobre.

¹⁷ואומר אלהם אתם ראים הרעה אשר אנחנו בה אשר ירושלם חרבה ושעריה נצתו באש לכו ונבנה את חומת ירושלם ולא נהיה עוד חרפה׃

¹⁸And I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me, as also of the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for the good [work].

¹⁸Et je leur racontai comment la bonne main de mon Dieu avait été sur moi, et quelles paroles le roi m'avait adressées. Ils dirent: Levons-nous, et bâtissons! Et ils se fortifièrent dans cette bonne résolution.

¹⁸ואגיד להם את יד אלהי אשר היא טובה עלי ואף דברי המלך אשר אמר לי ויאמרו נקום ובנינו ויחזקו ידיהם לטובה׃

¹⁹But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?

¹⁹Sanballat, le Horonite, Tobija, le serviteur ammonite, et Guéschem, l'Arabe, en ayant été informés, se moquèrent de nous et nous méprisèrent. Ils dirent: Que faites-vous là? Vous révoltez-vous contre le roi?

¹⁹וישמע סנבלט החרני וטביה העבד העמוני וגשם הערבי וילעגו לנו ויבזו עלינו ויאמרו מה הדבר הזה אשר אתם עשים העל המלך אתם מרדים׃

²⁰Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.

²⁰Et je leur fis cette réponse: Le Dieu des cieux nous donnera le succès. Nous, ses serviteurs, nous nous lèverons et nous bâtirons; mais vous, vous n'avez ni part, ni droit, ni souvenir dans Jérusalem.

²⁰ואשיב אותם דבר ואומר להם אלהי השמים הוא יצליח לנו ואנחנו עבדיו נקום ובנינו ולכם אין חלק וצדקה וזכרון בירושלם׃
