¹And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the broad place that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Jehovah had commanded to Israel.

¹Alors tout le peuple s'assembla comme un seul homme sur la place qui est devant la porte des eaux. Ils dirent à Esdras, le scribe, d'apporter le livre de la loi de Moïse, prescrite par l'Eternel à Israël.

¹ויאספו כל העם כאיש אחד אל הרחוב אשר לפני שער המים ויאמרו לעזרא הספר להביא את ספר תורת משה אשר צוה יהוה את ישראל׃

²And Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.

²Et le sacrificateur Esdras apporta la loi devant l'assemblée, composée d'hommes et de femmes et de tous ceux qui étaient capables de l'entendre. C'était le premier jour du septième mois.

²ויביא עזרא הכהן את התורה לפני הקהל מאיש ועד אשה וכל מבין לשמע ביום אחד לחדש השביעי׃

³And he read therein before the broad place that was before the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were [attentive] unto the book of the law.

³Esdras lut dans le livre depuis le matin jusqu'au milieu du jour, sur la place qui est devant la porte des eaux, en présence des hommes et des femmes et de ceux qui étaient capables de l'entendre. Tout le peuple fut attentif à la lecture du livre de la loi.

³ויקרא בו לפני הרחוב אשר לפני שער המים מן האור עד מחצית היום נגד האנשים והנשים והמבינים ואזני כל העם אל ספר התורה׃

⁴And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Uriah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, [and] Meshullam.

⁴Esdras, le scribe, était placé sur une estrade de bois, dressée à cette occasion. Auprès de lui, à sa droite, se tenaient Matthithia, Schéma, Anaja, Urie, Hilkija et Maaséja, et à sa gauche, Pedaja, Mischaël, Malkija, Haschum, Haschbaddana, Zacharie et Meschullam.

⁴ויעמד עזרא הספר על מגדל עץ אשר עשו לדבר ויעמד אצלו מתתיה ושמע ועניה ואוריה וחלקיה ומעשיה על ימינו ומשמאלו פדיה ומישאל ומלכיה וחשם וחשבדנה זכריה משלם׃

⁵And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:

⁵Esdras ouvrit le livre à la vue de tout le peuple, car il était élevé au-dessus de tout le peuple; et lorsqu'il l'eut ouvert, tout le peuple se tint en place.

⁵ויפתח עזרא הספר לעיני כל העם כי מעל כל העם היה וכפתחו עמדו כל העם׃

⁶and Ezra blessed Jehovah, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with the lifting up of their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped Jehovah with their faces to the ground.

⁶Esdras bénit l'Eternel, le grand Dieu, et tout le peuple répondit, en levant les mains: Amen! amen! Et ils s'inclinèrent et se prosternèrent devant l'Eternel, le visage contre terre.

⁶ויברך עזרא את יהוה האלהים הגדול ויענו כל העם אמן אמן במעל ידיהם ויקדו וישתחו ליהוה אפים ארצה׃

⁷Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people [stood] in their place.

⁷Josué, Bani, Schérébia, Jamin, Akkub, Schabbethaï, Hodija, Maaséja, Kelitha, Azaria, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaja, et les Lévites, expliquaient la loi au peuple, et chacun restait à sa place.

⁷וישוע ובני ושרביה ימין עקוב שבתי הודיה מעשיה קליטא עזריה יוזבד חנן פלאיה והלוים מבינים את העם לתורה והעם על עמדם׃

⁸And they read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.

⁸Ils lisaient distinctement dans le livre de la loi de Dieu, et ils en donnaient le sens pour faire comprendre ce qu'ils avaient lu.

⁸ויקראו בספר בתורת האלהים מפרש ושום שכל ויבינו במקרא׃

⁹And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto Jehovah your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

⁹Néhémie, le gouverneur, Esdras, le sacrificateur et le scribe, et les Lévites qui enseignaient le peuple, dirent à tout le peuple: Ce jour est consacré à l'Eternel, votre Dieu; ne soyez pas dans la désolation et dans les larmes! Car tout le peuple pleurait en entendant les paroles de la loi.

⁹ויאמר נחמיה הוא התרשתא ועזרא הכהן הספר והלוים המבינים את העם לכל העם היום קדש הוא ליהוה אלהיכם אל תתאבלו ואל תבכו כי בוכים כל העם כשמעם את דברי התורה׃

¹⁰Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye grieved; for the joy of Jehovah is your strength.

¹⁰Ils leur dirent: Allez, mangez des viandes grasses et buvez des liqueurs douces, et envoyez des portions à ceux qui n'ont rien de préparé, car ce jour est consacré à notre Seigneur; ne vous affligez pas, car la joie de l'Eternel sera votre force.

¹⁰ויאמר להם לכו אכלו משמנים ושתו ממתקים ושלחו מנות לאין נכון לו כי קדוש היום לאדנינו ואל תעצבו כי חדות יהוה היא מעזכם׃

¹¹So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.

¹¹Les Lévites calmaient tout le peuple, en disant: Taisez-vous, car ce jour est saint; ne vous affligez pas!

¹¹והלוים מחשים לכל העם לאמר הסו כי היום קדש ואל תעצבו׃

¹²And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.

¹²Et tout le peuple s'en alla pour manger et boire, pour envoyer des portions, et pour se livrer à de grandes réjouissances. Car ils avaient compris les paroles qu'on leur avait expliquées.

¹²וילכו כל העם לאכל ולשתות ולשלח מנות ולעשות שמחה גדולה כי הבינו בדברים אשר הודיעו להם׃

¹³And on the second day were gathered together the heads of fathers' [houses] of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to give attention to the words of the law.

¹³Le second jour, les chefs de famille de tout le peuple, les sacrificateurs et les Lévites, s'assemblèrent auprès d'Esdras, le scribe, pour entendre l'explication des paroles de la loi.

¹³וביום השני נאספו ראשי האבות לכל העם הכהנים והלוים אל עזרא הספר ולהשכיל אל דברי התורה׃

¹⁴And they found written in the law, how that Jehovah had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month;

¹⁴Et ils trouvèrent écrit dans la loi que l'Eternel avait prescrite par Moïse, que les enfants d'Israël devaient habiter sous des tentes pendant la fête du septième mois,

¹⁴וימצאו כתוב בתורה אשר צוה יהוה ביד משה אשר ישבו בני ישראל בסכות בחג בחדש השביעי׃

¹⁵and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and branches of wild olive, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

¹⁵et proclamer cette publication dans toutes leurs villes et à Jérusalem: Allez chercher à la montagne des rameaux d'olivier, des rameaux d'olivier sauvage, des rameaux de myrte, des rameaux de palmier, et des rameaux d'arbres touffus, pour faire des tentes, comme il est écrit.

¹⁵ואשר ישמיעו ויעבירו קול בכל עריהם ובירושלם לאמר צאו ההר והביאו עלי זית ועלי עץ שמן ועלי הדס ועלי תמרים ועלי עץ עבת לעשת סכת ככתוב׃

¹⁶So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the water gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.

¹⁶Alors le peuple alla chercher des rameaux, et ils se firent des tentes sur le toit de leurs maisons, dans leurs cours, dans les parvis de la maison de Dieu, sur la place de la porte des eaux et sur la place de la porte d'Ephraïm.

¹⁶ויצאו העם ויביאו ויעשו להם סכות איש על גגו ובחצרתיהם ובחצרות בית האלהים וברחוב שער המים וברחוב שער אפרים׃

¹⁷And all the assembly of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and dwelt in the booths; for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness.

¹⁷Toute l'assemblée de ceux qui étaient revenus de la captivité fit des tentes, et ils habitèrent sous ces tentes. Depuis le temps de Josué, fils de Nun, jusqu'à ce jour, les enfants d'Israël n'avaient rien fait de pareil. Et il y eut de très grandes réjouissances.

¹⁷ויעשו כל הקהל השבים מן השבי סכות וישבו בסכות כי לא עשו מימי ישוע בן נון כן בני ישראל עד היום ההוא ותהי שמחה גדולה מאד׃

¹⁸Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the ordinance.

¹⁸On lut dans le livre de la loi de Dieu chaque jour, depuis le premier jour jusqu'au dernier. On célébra la fête pendant sept jours, et il y eut une assemblée solennelle le huitième jour, comme cela est ordonné.

¹⁸ויקרא בספר תורת האלהים יום ביום מן היום הראשון עד היום האחרון ויעשו חג שבעת ימים וביום השמיני עצרת כמשפט׃
