¹And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab:

¹Israël demeurait à Sittim; et le peuple commença à se livrer à la débauche avec les filles de Moab.

¹וישב ישראל בשטים ויחל העם לזנות אל בנות מואב׃

²for they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

²Elles invitèrent le peuple aux sacrifices de leurs dieux; et le peuple mangea, et se prosterna devant leurs dieux.

²ותקראן לעם לזבחי אלהיהן ויאכל העם וישתחוו לאלהיהן׃

³And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.

³Israël s'attacha à Baal-Peor, et la colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Israël.

³ויצמד ישראל לבעל פעור ויחר אף יהוה בישראל׃

⁴And Jehovah said unto Moses, Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may turn away from Israel.

⁴L'Eternel dit à Moïse: Assemble tous les chefs du peuple, et fais pendre les coupables devant l'Eternel en face du soleil, afin que la colère ardente de l'Eternel se détourne d'Israël.

⁴ויאמר יהוה אל משה קח את כל ראשי העם והוקע אותם ליהוה נגד השמש וישב חרון אף יהוה מישראל׃

⁵And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that have joined themselves unto Baal-peor.

⁵Moïse dit aux juges d'Israël: Que chacun de vous tue ceux de ses gens qui se sont attachés à Baal-Peor.

⁵ויאמר משה אל שפטי ישראל הרגו איש אנשיו הנצמדים לבעל פעור׃

⁶And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.

⁶Et voici, un homme des enfants d'Israël vint et amena vers ses frères une Madianite, sous les yeux de Moïse et sous les yeux de toute l'assemblée des enfants d'Israël, tandis qu'ils pleuraient à l'entrée de la tente d'assignation.

⁶והנה איש מבני ישראל בא ויקרב אל אחיו את המדינית לעיני משה ולעיני כל עדת בני ישראל והמה בכים פתח אהל מועד׃

⁷And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand;

⁷A cette vue, Phinées, fils d'Eléazar, fils du sacrificateur Aaron, se leva du milieu de l'assemblée, et prit une lance, dans sa main.

⁷וירא פינחס בן אלעזר בן אהרן הכהן ויקם מתוך העדה ויקח רמח בידו׃

⁸and he went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

⁸Il suivit l'homme d'Israël dans sa tente, et il les perça tous les deux, l'homme d'Israël, puis la femme, par le bas-ventre. Et la plaie s'arrêta parmi les enfants d'Israël.

⁸ויבא אחר איש ישראל אל הקבה וידקר את שניהם את איש ישראל ואת האשה אל קבתה ותעצר המגפה מעל בני ישראל׃

⁹And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.

⁹Il y en eut vingt-quatre mille qui moururent de la plaie.

⁹ויהיו המתים במגפה ארבעה ועשרים אלף׃

¹⁰And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

¹⁰L'Eternel parla à Moïse, et dit:

¹⁰וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר׃

¹¹Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

¹¹Phinées, fils d'Eléazar, fils du sacrificateur Aaron, a détourné ma fureur de dessus les enfants d'Israël, parce qu'il a été animé de mon zèle au milieu d'eux; et je n'ai point, dans ma colère, consumé les enfants d'Israël.

¹¹פינחס בן אלעזר בן אהרן הכהן השיב את חמתי מעל בני ישראל בקנאו את קנאתי בתוכם ולא כליתי את בני ישראל בקנאתי׃

¹²Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

¹²C'est pourquoi tu diras que je traite avec lui une alliance de paix.

¹²לכן אמר הנני נתן לו את בריתי שלום׃

¹³and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

¹³Ce sera pour lui et pour sa postérité après lui l'alliance d'un sacerdoce perpétuel, parce qu'il a été zélé pour son Dieu, et qu'il a fait l'expiation pour les enfants d'Israël.

¹³והיתה לו ולזרעו אחריו ברית כהנת עולם תחת אשר קנא לאלהיו ויכפר על בני ישראל׃

¹⁴Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Simeonites.

¹⁴L'homme d'Israël, qui fut tué avec la Madianite, s'appelait Zimri, fils de Salu; il était chef d'une maison paternelle des Siméonites.

¹⁴ושם איש ישראל המכה אשר הכה את המדינית זמרי בן סלוא נשיא בית אב לשמעני׃

¹⁵And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian.

¹⁵La femme qui fut tuée, la Madianite, s'appelait Cozbi, fille de Tsur, chef des peuplades issues d'une maison paternelle en Madian.

¹⁵ושם האשה המכה המדינית כזבי בת צור ראש אמות בית אב במדין הוא׃

¹⁶And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

¹⁶L'Eternel parla à Moïse, et dit:

¹⁶וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר׃

¹⁷Vex the Midianites, and smite them;

¹⁷Traite les Madianites en ennemis, et tuez-les;

¹⁷צרור את המדינים והכיתם אותם׃

¹⁸for they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.

¹⁸car ils se sont montrés vos ennemis, en vous séduisant par leurs ruses, dans l'affaire de Peor, et dans l'affaire de Cozbi, fille d'un chef de Madian, leur soeur, tuée le jour de la plaie qui eut lieu à l'occasion de Peor.

¹⁸כי צררים הם לכם בנכליהם אשר נכלו לכם על דבר פעור ועל דבר כזבי בת נשיא מדין אחתם המכה ביום המגפה על דבר פעור׃
