1Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the [powers] that be are ordained of God.
1Que toute personne soit soumise aux autorités supérieures; car il n'y a point d'autorité qui ne vienne de Dieu, et les autorités qui existent ont été instituées de Dieu.
1כל נפש תכנע לגדלת הרשיות כי אין רשות כי אם מאת האלהים והרשיות הנמצאות על יד אלהים נתמנו׃
2Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment.
2C'est pourquoi celui qui s'oppose à l'autorité résiste à l'ordre que Dieu a établi, et ceux qui résistent attireront une condamnation sur eux-mêmes.
2לכן כל המתקומם לרשות מרד הוא בצווי האלהים והמרדים ישאו את דינם׃
3For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same:
3Ce n'est pas pour une bonne action, c'est pour une mauvaise, que les magistrats sont à redouter. Veux-tu ne pas craindre l'autorité? Fais-le bien, et tu auras son approbation.
3כי השליטים אינם לפחד למעשים הטובים כי אם להרעים ועל כן אם רצונך שלא תירא מן הרשות עשה הטוב והיה לך שבח ממנה׃
4for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil.
4Le magistrat est serviteur de Dieu pour ton bien. Mais si tu fais le mal, crains; car ce n'est pas en vain qu'il porte l'épée, étant serviteur de Dieu pour exercer la vengeance et punir celui qui fait le mal.
4כי משמשת אלהים היא לטוב לך אך אם הרע תעשה ירא כי לא לחנם חגרת חרב היא כי משמשת אלהים היא נקמת בקצף מכל עשה הרע׃
5Wherefore [ye] must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience' sake.
5Il est donc nécessaire d'être soumis, non seulement par crainte de la punition, mais encore par motif de conscience.
5על כן עלינו להכנע לא לבד בעבור הקצף כי גם בעבור דעת חובתנו׃
6For this cause ye pay tribute also; for they are ministers of God's service, attending continually upon this very thing.
6C'est aussi pour cela que vous payez les impôts. Car les magistrats sont des ministres de Dieu entièrement appliqués à cette fonction.
6כי לזאת אף משלמים אתם את המס כי משרתי אלהים המה השקדים על זאת׃
7Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute [is due]; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.
7Rendez à tous ce qui leur est dû: l'impôt à qui vous devez l'impôt, le tribut à qui vous devez le tribut, la crainte à qui vous devez la crainte, l'honneur à qui vous devez l'honneur.
7לכן תנו לכל איש כחובתכם המס לאשר לו המס המכס לאשר לו המכס והמורא לאשר לו המורא והכבוד לאשר לו הכבוד׃
8Owe no man anything, save to love one another: for he that loveth his neighbor hath fulfilled the law.
8Ne devez rien à personne, si ce n'est de vous aimer les uns les autres; car celui qui aime les autres a accompli la loi.
8ואל תהיו חיבים לאיש דבר זולתי אהבת איש את רעהו כי האהב את חברו קים את התורה׃
9For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
9En effet, les commandements: Tu ne commettras point d'adultère, tu ne tueras point, tu ne déroberas point, tu ne convoiteras point, et ceux qu'il peut encore y avoir, se résument dans cette parole: Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même.
9כי מצות לא תנאף לא תרצח לא תגנב לא תענה עד שקר לא תחמד ועוד כאלה כלולות הנה במאמר הזה ואהבת לרעך כמוך׃
10Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: love therefore is the fulfilment of the law.
10L'amour ne fait point de mal au prochain: l'amour est donc l'accomplissement de la loi.
10האהבה לא תרע לרע על כן האהבה קיום התורה כלה׃
11And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we [first] believed.
11Cela importe d'autant plus que vous savez en quel temps nous sommes: c'est l'heure de vous réveiller enfin du sommeil, car maintenant le salut est plus près de nous que lorsque nous avons cru.
11וכזאת עשו מדעתכם את הזמן כי כבר הגיעה השעה להקיץ מן השנה כי ישועתנו קרובה עתה מהיום אשר באנו להאמין׃
12The night is far spent, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
12La nuit est avancée, le jour approche. Dépouillons-nous donc des oeuvres des ténèbres, et revêtons les armes de la lumière.
12הלילה חלף והיום קרב לכן נסירה נא את מעשי החשך ונלבשה את כלי נשק האור׃
13Let us walk becomingly, as in the day; not in revelling and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy.
13Marchons honnêtement, comme en plein jour, loin des excès et de l'ivrognerie, de la luxure et de l'impudicité, des querelles et des jalousies.
13וכמו ביום נתהלכה בצניעות לא בזוללות ובשכרון ולא בבעילות ועשות זמה ולא במריבה וקנאה׃
14But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to [fulfil] the lusts [thereof].
14Mais revêtez-vous du Seigneur Jésus-Christ, et n'ayez pas soin de la chair pour en satisfaire les convoitises.
14כי אם לבשו את האדון ישוע המשיח ודאגו לבשרכם אך לא להגביר התאות׃
