¹And Naomi her mother-in-law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

¹Naomi, sa belle-mère, lui dit: Ma fille, je voudrais assurer ton repos, afin que tu fusses heureuse.

¹ותאמר לה נעמי חמותה בתי הלא אבקש לך מנוח אשר ייטב לך׃

²And now is not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to-night in the threshing-floor.

²Et maintenant Boaz, avec les servantes duquel tu as été, n'est-il pas notre parent? Voici, il doit vanner cette nuit les orges qui sont dans l'aire.

²ועתה הלא בעז מדעתנו אשר היית את נערותיו הנה הוא זרה את גרן השערים הלילה׃

³Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the threshing-floor, but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

³Lave-toi et oins-toi, puis remets tes habits, et descends à l'aire. Tu ne te feras pas connaître à lui, jusqu'à ce qu'il ait achevé de manger et de boire.

³ורחצת וסכת ושמת שמלתך עליך וירדתי הגרן אל תודעי לאיש עד כלתו לאכל ולשתות׃

⁴And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.

⁴Et quand il ira se coucher, observe le lieu où il se couche. Ensuite va, découvre ses pieds, et couche-toi. Il te dira lui-même ce que tu as à faire.

⁴ויהי בשכבו וידעת את המקום אשר ישכב שם ובאת וגלית מרגלתיו ושכבתי והוא יגיד לך את אשר תעשין׃

⁵And she said unto her, All that thou sayest I will do.

⁵Elle lui répondit: Je ferai tout ce que tu as dit.

⁵ותאמר אליה כל אשר תאמרי אעשה׃

⁶And she went down unto the threshing-floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law bade her.

⁶Elle descendit à l'aire, et fit tout ce qu'avait ordonné sa belle-mère.

⁶ותרד הגרן ותעש ככל אשר צותה חמותה׃

⁷And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.

⁷Boaz mangea et but, et son coeur était joyeux. Il alla se coucher à l'extrémité d'un tas de gerbes. Ruth vint alors tout doucement, découvrit ses pieds, et se coucha.

⁷ויאכל בעז וישת וייטב לבו ויבא לשכב בקצה הערמה ותבא בלט ותגל מרגלתיו ותשכב׃

⁸And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself; and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.

⁸Au milieu de la nuit, cet homme eut une frayeur; il se pencha, et voici, une femme était couchée à ses pieds.

⁸ויהי בחצי הלילה ויחרד האיש וילפת והנה אשה שכבת מרגלתיו׃

⁹And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thy handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.

⁹Il dit: Qui es-tu? Elle répondit: Je suis Ruth, ta servante; étends ton aile sur ta servante, car tu as droit de rachat.

⁹ויאמר מי את ותאמר אנכי רות אמתך ופרשת כנפך על אמתך כי גאל אתה׃

¹⁰And he said, Blessed be thou of Jehovah, my daughter: thou hast showed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.

¹⁰Et il dit: Sois bénie de l'Eternel, ma fille! Ce dernier trait témoigne encore plus en ta faveur que le premier, car tu n'as pas recherché des jeunes gens, pauvres ou riches.

¹⁰ויאמר ברוכה את ליהוה בתי היטבת חסדך האחרון מן הראשון לבלתי לכת אחרי הבחורים אם דל ואם עשיר׃

¹¹And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou sayest; for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a worthy woman.

¹¹Maintenant, ma fille, ne crains point; je ferai pour toi tout ce que tu diras; car toute la porte de mon peuple sait que tu es une femme vertueuse.

¹¹ועתה בתי אל תיראי כל אשר תאמרי אעשה לך כי יודע כל שער עמי כי אשת חיל את׃

¹²And now it is true that I am a near kinsman; howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.

¹²Il est bien vrai que j'ai droit de rachat, mais il en existe un autre plus proche que moi.

¹²ועתה כי אמנם כי אם גאל אנכי וגם יש גאל קרוב ממני׃

¹³Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as Jehovah liveth: lie down until the morning.

¹³Passe ici la nuit. Et demain, s'il veut user envers toi du droit de rachat, à la bonne heure, qu'il le fasse; mais s'il ne lui plaît pas d'en user envers toi, j'en userai, moi, l'Eternel est vivant! Reste couchée jusqu'au matin.

¹³ליני הלילה והיה בבקר אם יגאלך טוב יגאל ואם לא יחפץ לגאלך וגאלתיך אנכי חי יהוה שכבי עד הבקר׃

¹⁴And she lay at his feet until the morning. And she rose up before one could discern another. For he said, Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.

¹⁴Elle resta couchée à ses pieds jusqu'au matin, et elle se leva avant qu'on pût se reconnaître l'un l'autre. Boaz dit: Qu'on ne sache pas qu'une femme est entrée dans l'aire.

¹⁴ותשכב מרגלתו עד הבקר ותקם בטרום יכיר איש את רעהו ויאמר אל יודע כי באה האשה הגרן׃

¹⁵And he said, Bring the mantle that is upon thee, and hold it; and she held it; and he measured six [measures] of barley, and laid it on her: and he went into the city.

¹⁵Et il ajouta: Donne le manteau qui est sur toi, et tiens-le. Elle le tint, et il mesura six mesures d'orge, qu'il chargea sur elle. Puis il rentra dans la ville.

¹⁵ויאמר הבי המטפחת אשר עליך ואחזי בה ותאחז בה וימד שש שערים וישת עליה ויבא העיר׃

¹⁶And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.

¹⁶Ruth revint auprès de sa belle-mère, et Naomi dit: Est-ce toi, ma fille? Ruth lui raconta tout ce que cet homme avait fait pour elle.

¹⁶ותבוא אל חמותה ותאמר מי את בתי ותגד לה את כל אשר עשה לה האיש׃

¹⁷And she said, These six [measures] of barley gave he me; for he said, Go not empty unto thy mother-in-law.

¹⁷Elle dit: Il m'a donné ces six mesures d'orge, en disant: Tu ne retourneras pas à vide vers ta belle-mère.

¹⁷ותאמר שש השערים האלה נתן לי כי אמר אל תבואי ריקם אל חמותך׃

¹⁸Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall; for the man will not rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

¹⁸Et Naomi dit: Sois tranquille, ma fille, jusqu'à ce que tu saches comment finira la chose, car cet homme ne se donnera point de repos qu'il n'ait terminé cette affaire aujourd'hui.

¹⁸ותאמר שבי בתי עד אשר תדעין איך יפל דבר כי לא ישקט האיש כי אם כלה הדבר היום׃
