¹Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

²in the highpriesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

²Yang menjabat imam-imam agung ialah Hanas dan Kayafas. Pada tahun itulah Allah berbicara kepada Yohanes, anak Zakharia di padang pasir.

³And he came into all the region round about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto remission of sins;

³Maka Yohanes pergi ke mana-mana di seluruh daerah Sungai Yordan dan menyampaikan berita dari Allah. Yohanes berseru, "Bertobatlah dari dosa-dosamu, dan kamu harus dibaptis, supaya Allah mengampuni kamu."

⁴as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.

⁴Itu sesuai dengan yang tertulis di dalam buku Nabi Yesaya: "Ada orang berseru-seru di padang pasir, 'Siapkanlah jalan untuk Tuhan, ratakanlah jalan bagi Dia.

⁵Every valley shall be filled, And every mountain and hill shall be brought low; And the crooked shall become straight, And the rough ways smooth;

⁵Setiap lembah hendaklah ditimbun, setiap gunung dan bukit diratakan. Jalan yang berliku-liku hendaklah diluruskan, dan jalan yang lekak-lekuk diratakan.

⁶And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

⁶Orang-orang di seluruh dunia akan melihat Allah menyelamatkan manusia!'"

⁷He said therefore to the multitudes that went out to be baptized of him, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁷Banyak orang datang kepada Yohanes untuk dibaptis. Yohanes berkata kepada mereka, "Kamu orang jahat! Siapa yang mengatakan bahwa kamu dapat luput dari hukuman Allah yang akan datang?

⁸Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

⁸Tunjukkanlah dengan perbuatanmu bahwa kamu sudah bertobat dari dosa-dosamu! Jangan mulai berkata bahwa Abraham adalah nenek moyangmu. Ingat: Dari batu-batu ini pun Allah sanggup membuat keturunan untuk Abraham!

⁹And even now the axe also lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

⁹Kapak sudah siap untuk menebang pohon sampai ke akar-akarnya. Setiap pohon yang tidak menghasilkan buah yang baik akan ditebang dan dibuang ke dalam api."

¹⁰And the multitudes asked him, saying, What then must we do?

¹⁰"Jadi, apa yang harus kami buat?" tanya orang-orang kepada Yohanes.

¹¹And he answered and said unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath food, let him do likewise.

¹¹Yohanes menjawab, "Orang yang mempunyai dua helai baju, harus memberikan sehelai kepada yang tidak punya; dan orang yang mempunyai makanan, harus membagikannya."

¹²And there came also publicans to be baptized, and they said unto him, Teacher, what must we do?

¹²Penagih-penagih pajak juga datang kepada Yohanes untuk dibaptis. Mereka bertanya, "Bapak Guru, apa yang harus kami buat?"

¹³And he said unto them, Extort no more than that which is appointed you.

¹³Yohanes menjawab, "Janganlah menagih lebih banyak dari apa yang sudah ditetapkan."

¹⁴And soldiers also asked him, saying, And we, what must we do? And he said unto them, Extort from no man by violence, neither accuse [any one] wrongfully; and be content with your wages.

¹⁴Ada juga prajurit yang bertanya, "Bagaimana dengan kami? Apa yang harus kami buat?" Yohanes menjawab, "Jangan memeras siapa pun dan jangan merampas uang dengan tuduhan-tuduhan palsu. Puaslah dengan gajimu!"

¹⁵And as the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether haply he were the Christ;

¹⁵Pada waktu itu orang-orang mulai bertanya-tanya, apakah Yohanes Raja Penyelamat yang mereka nantikan.

¹⁶John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but there cometh he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and [in] fire:

¹⁶Itu sebabnya Yohanes berkata kepada mereka semua, "Saya membaptis kamu dengan air, tetapi nanti akan datang Orang yang lebih besar daripada saya. Membuka tali sepatu-Nya pun saya tidak layak. Ia akan membaptis kamu dengan Roh Allah dan api.

¹⁷whose fan is in his hand, thoroughly to cleanse his threshing-floor, and to gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

¹⁷Di tangan-Nya ada nyiru untuk menampi semua gandum-Nya sampai bersih. Gandum akan dikumpulkan-Nya di dalam lumbung, tetapi semua sekam akan dibakar-Nya di dalam api yang tidak bisa padam!"

¹⁸With many other exhortations therefore preached he good tidings unto the people;

¹⁸Demikianlah Yohanes menasihati orang-orang dengan berbagai-bagai cara, pada waktu ia mewartakan Kabar Baik.

¹⁹but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother's wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,

¹⁹Tetapi Herodes, penguasa Galilea, ditegur oleh Yohanes mengenai perkawinannya dengan Herodias, istri saudaranya, dan mengenai semua kejahatan lain yang telah diperbuatnya.

²⁰added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.

²⁰Tetapi Herodes malah menambah kejahatan-kejahatannya dengan memasukkan Yohanes ke dalam penjara.

²¹Now it came to pass, when all the people were baptized, that, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

²¹Setelah semua orang itu dibaptis, Yesus juga dibaptis. Dan ketika Ia sedang berdoa, langit terbuka,

²²and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

²²dan Roh Allah turun ke atas-Nya berupa burung merpati. Lalu terdengar suara Allah mengatakan, "Engkaulah Anak-Ku yang Kukasihi. Engkau menyenangkan hati-Ku."

²³And Jesus himself, when he began [to teach], was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the [son] of Heli,

²³Pada waktu Yesus mulai pekerjaan-Nya, Ia berumur kira-kira tiga puluh tahun. Menurut pendapat orang, Ia anak Yusuf, anak Eli,

²⁴the [son] of Matthat, the [son] of Levi, the [son] of Melchi, the [son] of Jannai, the [son] of Joseph,

²⁴anak Matat, anak Lewi, anak Malkhi, anak Yanai, anak Yusuf,

²⁵the [son] of Mattathias, the [son] of Amos, the [son] of Nahum, the [son] of Esli, the [son] of Naggai,

²⁵anak Matica, anak Amos, anak Nahum, anak Hesli, anak Nagai,

²⁶the [son] of Maath, the [son] of Mattathias, the [son] of Semein, the [son] of Josech, the [son] of Joda,

³⁸the [son] of Enos, the [son] of Seth, the [son] of Adam, the [son] of God.
