1And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, saying,
1Pada waktu itu datanglah Yohanes Pembaptis di padang pasir di Yudea dan mulai berkhotbah.
2Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
2"Bertobatlah dari dosa-dosamu," katanya, "karena Allah akan segera memerintah sebagai Raja!"
3For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.
3Yohanes inilah orang yang dimaksudkan oleh Nabi Yesaya dalam kata-katanya ini, "Ada orang berseru-seru di padang pasir, 'Siapkanlah jalan untuk Tuhan; ratakanlah jalan bagi Dia.'"
4Now John himself had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
4Yohanes memakai pakaian dari bulu unta. Ikat pinggangnya dari kulit, dan makanannya belalang dan madu hutan.
5Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about the Jordan;
5Banyak orang dari Yerusalem, dari seluruh negeri Yudea dan dari daerah-daerah di sekitar Sungai Yordan datang kepada Yohanes.
6and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
6Mereka mengaku dosa-dosa mereka, dan Yohanes membaptis mereka di Sungai Yordan.
7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
7Banyak juga orang Farisi dan Saduki datang kepada Yohanes untuk dibaptis. Tetapi waktu ia melihat mereka datang, ia berkata kepada mereka, "Kamu orang jahat! Siapa yang mengatakan bahwa kamu dapat luput dari hukuman Allah yang akan datang?
8Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance:
8Tunjukkanlah dengan perbuatanmu bahwa kamu sudah bertobat dari dosa-dosamu.
9and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
9Jangan sangka kamu dapat lolos dari hukuman dengan berkata bahwa Abraham adalah nenek moyangmu. Ingat, dari batu-batu ini pun, Allah sanggup membuat keturunan untuk Abraham!
10And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
10Kapak sudah siap untuk menebang pohon sampai ke akar-akarnya. Setiap pohon yang tidak menghasilkan buah yang baik akan ditebang dan dibuang ke dalam api.
11I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and [in] fire:
11Saya membaptis kamu dengan air untuk menyatakan bahwa kamu sudah bertobat dari dosa-dosamu; tetapi yang akan datang sesudah saya, akan membaptis kamu dengan Roh Allah dan api. Ia lebih besar daripada saya. Untuk membawa sepatu-Nya pun saya tidak layak.
12whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.
12Di tangan-Nya ada nyiru untuk menampi semua gandum-Nya sampai bersih. Gandum akan dikumpulkan-Nya di dalam lumbung, tetapi semua sekam akan dibakar-Nya di dalam api yang tidak bisa padam."
13Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
13Pada waktu itu Yesus pergi dari Galilea ke Sungai Yordan. Di sana Ia datang pada Yohanes dan minta dibaptis.
14But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
14Tetapi Yohanes mencoba menolak permintaan-Nya itu. Yohanes berkata, "Sayalah yang seharusnya dibaptis oleh Bapak. Sekarang malah Bapak yang datang kepada saya."
15But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [it] now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him.
15Tetapi Yesus menjawab, "Biar saja untuk saat ini. Sebab dengan demikian kita melakukan semua yang dikehendaki Allah." Jadi Yohanes membaptis Yesus.
16And Jesus when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him;
16Sesudah dibaptis, Yesus segera keluar dari air di sungai itu. Tiba-tiba langit terbuka dan Yesus melihat Roh Allah turun seperti burung merpati ke atas-Nya.
17and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
17Kemudian terdengar suara Allah mengatakan, "Inilah Anak-Ku yang Kukasihi. Ia menyenangkan hati-Ku."
