¹Job progovori i reče:

¹And Job answered and said,

²"Slušajte, slušajte dobro što ću reći, utjehu mi takvu barem udijelite.

²Hear attentively my speech, and let this replace your consolations.

³Otrpite da riječ jednu ja izrečem, kad završim, tad se rugajte slobodno.

³Suffer me and I will speak; and after I have spoken, mock on!

⁴Zar protiv čovjeka dižem ja optužbu? Kako da strpljenje onda ne izgubim?

⁴As for me, is my complaint to a man? or wherefore should not my spirit be impatient?

⁵Pogledajte na me: užas će vas spopast', rukom ćete svoja zakloniti usta;

⁵Mark me, and be astonished, and lay the hand upon the mouth.

⁶pomislim li na to, prestravim se i sam i čitavim svojim tad protrnem tijelom.

⁶Even when I think [thereon], I am affrighted, and trembling taketh hold of my flesh.

⁷Zašto na životu ostaju zlikovci i, što su stariji, moćniji bivaju?

⁷Wherefore do the wicked live, grow old, yea, become mighty in power?

⁸Potomstvo njihovo s njima napreduje a izdanci im se množe pred očima.

⁸Their seed is established with them in their sight, and their offspring before their eyes.

⁹Strah nikakav kuće njihove ne mori i šiba ih Božja ostavlja na miru.

⁹Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of +God upon them.

¹⁰Njihovi bikovi plode pouzdano, krave im se tele i ne jalove se.

¹⁰Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.

¹¹K'o jagnjad djeca im slobodno skakuću, veselo igraju njihovi sinovi.

¹¹They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.

¹²Oni pjevaju uz harfe i bubnjeve i vesele se uz zvukove svirale.

¹²They shout to the tambour and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.

¹³Dane svoje završavaju u sreći, u Podzemlje oni silaze spokojno.

¹³They spend their days in prosperity, and in a moment go down to Sheol.

¹⁴A govorili su Bogu: 'Ostavi nas, ne želimo znati za tvoje putove!

¹⁴And they say unto ùGod, Depart from us, for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways!

¹⁵TÓa tko je Svesilni da njemu služimo i kakva nam korist da ga zazivamo?'

¹⁵What is the Almighty that we should serve him? and what are we profited if we pray unto him?

¹⁶Zar svoju sreću u ruci ne imahu, makar do Njega ne drže ništa oni?

¹⁶Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand. The counsel of the wicked be far from me!

¹⁷Zar se luč opakog kada ugasila? Zar se na njega oborila nesreća? Zar mu u gnjevu svom On skroji sudbinu?

¹⁷How often is the lamp of the wicked put out, and cometh their calamity upon them? Doth he distribute sorrows [to them] in his anger?

¹⁸Zar je kao slama na vjetru postao, kao pljeva koju vihor svud raznosi?

¹⁸Do they become as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away?

¹⁹Hoće l' ga kaznit' Bog u njegovoj djeci? Ne, njega nek' kazni da sam to osjeti!

¹⁹+God layeth up [the punishment of] his iniquity for his children; he rewardeth him, and he shall know [it]:

²⁰Vlastitim očima nek' rasap svoj vidi, neka se napije srdžbe Svesilnoga!

²⁰His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the fury of the Almighty.

²¹TÓa što poslije smrti on za dom svoj mari kad će se presjeć' niz njegovih mjeseci?

²¹For what pleasure should he have in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off?

²²Ali tko će Boga učiti mudrosti, njega koji sudi najvišim bićima?

²²Can any teach ùGod knowledge? And he it is that judgeth those that are high.

²³Jedan umire u punom blagostanju, bez briga ikakvih, u potpunom miru,

²³One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet;

²⁴bokova od pretiline otežalih i kostiju sočne moždine prepunih.

²⁴His sides are full of fat, and the marrow of his bones is moistened;

²⁵A drugi umire s gorčinom u duši, nikad nikakve ne okusivši sreće.

²⁵And another dieth in bitterness of soul, and hath not tasted good:

²⁶Obojica leže zajedno u prahu, crvi ih jednako prekrivaju oba.

²⁶Together they lie down in the dust, and the worms cover them.

²⁷O, znam dobro kakve vaše su namjere, kakve zlosti protiv mene vi snujete.

²⁷Lo, I know your thoughts, and the devices ye wrongfully imagine against me.

²⁸Jer pitate: 'Gdje je kuća plemićeva, šator u kojem stanovahu opaki?'

²⁸For ye say, Where is the house of the noble? and where the tent of the dwellings of the wicked?

²⁹Niste li na cesti putnike pitali, zar njihovo svjedočanstvo ne primate:

²⁹Have ye not asked the wayfarers? and do ye not regard their tokens:

³⁰'Opaki je u dan nesreće pošteđen i u dan Božje jarosti veseo je.'

³⁰That the wicked is reserved for the day of calamity? They are led forth to the day of wrath.

³¹Al' na postupcima tko će mu predbacit' i tko će mu vratit' što je počinio?

³¹Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?

³²A kad ga na kraju na groblje odnesu, na grobni mu humak postavljaju stražu.

³²Yet is he carried to the graves, and watch is kept over the tomb.

³³Lake su mu grude zemlje u dolini dok za njime ide čitavo pučanstvo.

³³The clods of the valley are sweet unto him; and every man followeth suit after him, as there were innumerable before him.

³⁴O, kako su vaše utjehe isprazne! Kakva su prijevara vaši odgovori!"

³⁴How then comfort ye me in vain? Your answers remain perfidious.
