1 Geiriau'r Pregethwr, mab Dafydd, brenin yn Jerwsalem:
1The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2 "Gwagedd llwyr," meddai'r Pregethwr, "gwagedd llwyr yw'r cyfan."
2Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
3 Pa elw sydd i neb yn ei holl lafur, wrth iddo ymlafnio dan yr haul?
3What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
4 Y mae cenhedlaeth yn mynd, ac un arall yn dod, ond y mae'r ddaear yn aros am byth.
4One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
5 Y mae'r haul yn codi ac yn machlud, ac yn brysio'n l i'r lle y cododd.
5The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
6 Y mae'r gwynt yn chwythu i'r de, ac yna'n troi i'r gogledd; y mae'r gwynt yn troelli'n barhaus, ac yn dod yn l i'w gwrs.
6The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
7 Y mae'r holl nentydd yn rhedeg i'r mr, ond nid yw'r mr byth yn llenwi; y mae'r nentydd yn mynd yn l i'w tarddle, ac yna'n llifo allan eto.
7All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
8 Y mae pob peth mor flinderus fel na all neb ei fynegi; ni ddigonir y llygad trwy edrych, na'r glust trwy glywed.
8All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9 Yr hyn a fu a fydd, a'r hyn a wnaed a wneir; nid oes dim newydd dan yr haul.
9The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
10 A oes unrhyw beth y gellir dweud amdano, "Edrych, dyma beth newydd"? Y mae'r cyfan yn bod ers amser maith, y mae'n bod o'n blaenau ni.
10Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
11 Ni chofir am y rhai a fu, nac ychwaith am y rhai a ddaw ar eu hl; ni chofir amdanynt gan y rhai a fydd yn eu dilyn.
11There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
12 Yr oeddwn i, y Pregethwr, yn frenin ar Israel yn Jerwsalem.
12I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 Rhoddais fy mryd ar astudio a chwilio, trwy ddoethineb, y cyfan sy'n digwydd dan y nef. Gorchwyl diflas yw'r un a roddodd Duw i bobl ymboeni yn ei gylch.
13And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
14 Gwelais yr holl bethau a ddig-wyddodd dan yr haul, ac yn wir nid yw'r cyfan ond gwagedd ac ymlid gwynt.
14I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
15 Ni ellir unioni yr hyn sydd gam, na chyfrif yr hyn sydd ar goll.
15That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16 Dywedais wrthyf fy hun, "Llwyddais i ennill mwy o ddoethineb nag unrhyw frenin o'm blaen yn Jerwsalem; cefais brofi llawer o ddoethineb a gwybodaeth."
16I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
17 Rhoddais fy mryd ar ddeall doethineb a gwybodaeth, ynfydrwydd a ffolineb, a chanfm nad oedd hyn ond ymlid gwynt.
17And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
18 Oherwydd y mae cynyddu doethineb yn cynyddu gofid, ac ychwanegu gwybodaeth yn ychwanegu poen.
18For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
