1و اما دربارۀ خوراک های تقدیم شده به بُتها: البته همان طور که شما می گوئید: «همۀ ما اشخاص دانائی هستیم.» ولی چنین دانشی آدم را مغرور می سازد، اما محبت بنا می کند.
1Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
2اگر کسی گمان می کند که بر همه چیز واقف است، واقعاً آنطوری که باید و شاید هنوز چیزی نمی داند.
2And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
3اما کسی که خدا را دوست دارد، به وسیلۀ خدا شناخته شده است.
3But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
4پس دربارۀ خوراک هایی که به بُتها تقدیم شده است: ما می دانیم که بُت واقعیت ندارد و خدای دیگری جز خدای یکتا نیست.
4As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
5حتی اگر به قول آن ها خدایانی در آسمان و زمین وجود داشته باشد، (همانطور که می بینیم آن ها به این گونه خدایان و خداوندان عقیده دارند)
5For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
6برای ما فقط یک خدا هست ـ یعنی خدای پدر که آفرینندۀ همه چیز است و ما برای او زندگی می کنیم و فقط یک خداوند وجود دارد، یعنی عیسی مسیح که همه چیز به وسیلۀ او آفریده شد و ما در او زیست می کنیم.
6But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
7اما همۀ مردم این را نمی دانند، بعضی چنان با بُتها خو گرفته اند که تا به امروز خوردن خوراک هایی را که به بُتها تقدیم شده، خوردن قربانی بُتها می دانند و هر وقت از آن بخورند وجدان ضعیف شان آلوده می گردد.
7Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
8البته خوراک، ما را به خدا نزدیکتر نخواهد ساخت؛ نه از خوردن آن غذاها نفعی عاید ما می شود نه از نخوردن آن ها ضرری.
8But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
9اما متوجه باشید، مبادا این آزادی عمل شما به نحوی باعث لغزش اشخاص ضعیف گردد.
9But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your's become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
10اگر کسی تو را که شخص دانایی هستی بر سر دسترخوان بتکده نشسته ببیند، آیا این عمل تو کسی را که دارای وجدان ضعیفی است، به خوردن قربانی های بُت تشویق نخواهد کرد؟
10For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
11پس روشنفکری تو باعث می شود، برادر ضعیفی که مسیح به خاطر او مُرد نابود شود.
11And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
12و به این ترتیب شما نسبت به برادران خود گناه می کنید و وجدان ضعیف آن ها را جریحه دار می سازید و از این بدتر، نسبت به خود مسیح هم گناه می کنید!بنابراین، اگر خوراکی را که می خورم باعث لغزش برادرم شود، تا ابد گوشت نخواهم خورد، مبادا باعث لغزش او بشوم.
12But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
13بنابراین، اگر خوراکی را که می خورم باعث لغزش برادرم شود، تا ابد گوشت نخواهم خورد، مبادا باعث لغزش او بشوم.
13Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.
