¹مگر من آزاد و مختار نیستم؟ مگر من رسول نیستم؟ آیا من خداوند ما عیسی را ندیده ام؟ مگر شما نتیجۀ کار من در خداوند نیستید؟

¹Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?

²اگر دیگران رسالت مرا قبول نداشته باشند، شما باید مرا رسول بدانید زیرا وجود شما در خداوند بهترین دلیل رسالت من است.

²If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.

³این است جواب من به آنانی که در مورد من انتقاد می کنند:

³Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,

⁴آیا، این حق را نداریم که غذای خود را از کلیساها تأمین کنیم؟

⁴Have we not power to eat and to drink?

⁵آیا ما مانند دیگر رسولان و برادران خداوند و پِترُس، حق نداریم در مسافرت های خود همسر مسیحی با خود داشته باشیم؟

⁵Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

⁶آیا فقط من و برنابا باید برای امرار معاش زحمت بکشیم؟

⁶Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?

⁷آیا هرگز شنیده اید که عسکر با خرج خود خدمت کند؟ یا کسی در تاکستان خود انگور کاشته و از میوۀ آن نخورد؟ یا کدام چوپان است که گله ای را چوپانی کرده و از شیر آن استفاده نکند؟

⁷Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

⁸آیا به مثال های انسانی متوسل شده ام؟ آیا شریعت نیز همین را نمی گوید؟

⁸Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?

⁹زیرا در تورات موسی نوشته شده است: «هنگامی که گاو خرمن را می کوبد دهانش را نبند.» آیا خدا در فکر گاوان است؟

⁹For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?

¹⁰یا واقعاً به خاطر ما بود که این گونه سخن گفت؟ البته در مورد ما نوشته شده است. زیرا آنکه قلبه می کند و آنکه خرمن را می کوبد، به امید شریک شدن در حاصل کار می کند.

¹⁰Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

¹¹ما در میان شما بذر روحانی کاشتیم آیا جای تعجب است، اگر از شما کمک مادی بگیریم؟

¹¹If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

¹²هرگاه دیگران چنین توقعی از شما دارند، آیا ما نباید توقع بیشتر داشته باشیم؟ در هر صورت ما از حق خود استفاده ننموده ایم بلکه همه چیز را تحمل کرده ایم تا مانعی بر سر راه پیشرفت انجیل مسیح نگذارده باشیم.

¹²If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

¹³مگر نمی دانید آنها که خدمت عبادتگاه را می کنند، از آنچه به عبادتگاه اهداء می شود می خورند و نیز خادمین قربانگاه از قربانی های آن حصه می گیرند؟

¹³Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

¹⁴به همین طریق، خداوند امر کرده است کسانی که بشارت می دهند، معاش خود را از آن راه تأمین کنند.

¹⁴Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

¹⁵اما من از هیچ یک از این حقوق استفاده نکرده ام و این را هم به آن منظور نمی نویسم که برای خود چنین حقی کسب کنم، برای من مرگ بهتر است از این که کسی افتخارات مرا بیهوده سازد.

¹⁵But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.

¹⁶اگر من بشارت دهم نمی توانم فخر کنم، زیرا در انجام آن مجبور هستم! وای بر من اگر بشارت ندهم!

¹⁶For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!

¹⁷اگر کار خود را از روی علاقه انجام دهم، اجر می گیرم و اگر از روی علاقه انجام ندهم، باز هم وظیفه ای است که به من سپرده شده و باید انجام دهم.

¹⁷For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.

¹⁸پس اجر من چیست؟ اجر من این است که وقتی بشارت می دهم، انجیل را مفت و مجانی به دیگران می رسانم! یعنی من از حقوق خود به عنوان یک مبشر صرف نظر می کنم.

¹⁸What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.

¹⁹زیرا اگر چه کاملاً آزادم و بردۀ کسی نیستم، خود را غلام همه ساخته ام تا به وسیلۀ من عدۀ زیادی به مسیح ایمان آورند.

¹⁹For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

²⁰از این سبب وقتی با یهودیان هستم، مانند یک یهودی زندگی می کنم و وقتی که بین کسانی هستم، که تابع شریعت موسی هستند مانند آن ها رفتار می کنم. (اگر چه من تابع شریعت نیستم.)

²⁰And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

²¹و برای اینکه غیر یهودیان که شریعت موسی را ندارند به مسیح ایمان آورند، همرنگ آنها شدم. (منظورم نافرمانی از شریعت خدا نیست، چون در واقع من تحت فرمان مسیح هستم.)

²¹To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

²²همچنین در میان اشخاص ضعیف مثل آن ها ضعیف شدم تا به وسیلۀ من آن ها به مسیح ایمان آورند. در واقع با همه همرنگ شده ام تا به نحوی وسیلۀ نجات آن ها بشوم.

²²To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

²³همۀ این کارها را به خاطر انجیل انجام می دهم تا در برکات آن شریک شوم.

²³And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

²⁴مگر نمی دانید که در مسابقۀ دَوِش، اگرچه همۀ شرکت کنندگان می دوند، ولی فقط یک نفر جایزه می گیرد؟ شما نیز طوری بدوید که آن جایزه نصیب شما شود.

²⁴Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

²⁵ورزشکاری که خود را برای مسابقه آماده می سازد، سخت می کوشد و از زیاده روی خودداری می کند. آن ها چنین می کنند تا تاجِ گُلی را که زود پژمرده می شود به دست آورند، ولی ما این کار را به خاطر تاجی که تا ابد باقی می ماند انجام می دهیم.

²⁵And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

²⁶بنابراین من می دوم ولی نه بدون هدف، من مُشت می زنم اما نه مثل کسی که به هوا مُشت می زند.بدن خود را زحمت می دهم و آن را تحت فرمان خود در می آورم، مبادا پس از این که دیگران را به مسابقه دعوت کردم، خود من از شرکت در آن محروم باشم.

²⁶I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

²⁷بدن خود را زحمت می دهم و آن را تحت فرمان خود در می آورم، مبادا پس از این که دیگران را به مسابقه دعوت کردم، خود من از شرکت در آن محروم باشم.

²⁷But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
