1سلیمان معاهده ای با فرعون، پادشاه مصر امضاء کرد و با دختر او عروسی نمود و عروس خود را به شهر داود آورد تا بنای قصر خود و عبادتگاه خداوند را تمام کند و دیوارهای اطراف اورشلیم را بسازد.
1And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
2چون تا آن زمان هنوز عبادتگاهی آباد نشده بود مردم اسرائیل در تپه ها قربانی می کردند.
2Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the LORD, until those days.
3سلیمان خداوند را دوست داشت و مطابق هدایات پدر خود، داود رفتار می کرد، ولی او هم قربانی ها و نذرهای خود را در تپه ها تقدیم می نمود.
3And Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.
4روزی پادشاه برای ادای قربانی به جِبعون رفت، زیرا در آنجا یک تپۀ بلندی بود و سلیمان یکهزار قربانی سوختنی بر قربانگاه آنجا تقدیم کرد.
4And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5در جِبعون سلیمان خداوند را در خواب دید. خداوند به او گفت: «بگو که برایت چه بدهم؟»
5In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
6سلیمان جواب داد: «تو به پدرم داود، بسیار مهربان بودی، زیرا که او یک شخص صادق، راستکار و امین بود و از همه احکام تو پیروی می کرد. تو امروز احسان و مهربانی خود را با بخشیدن تخت او به من زیادتر نشان دادی.
6And Solomon said, Thou hast showed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
7ای خداوند، خدای من، حالا که این بنده ات را بجای پدرم، داود، پادشاه ساختی و هرچند که من طفل ضعیفی هستم که دست راست و چپ خود را نمی شناسم.
7And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
8و افتخار آنرا دادی که در بین قوم برگزیده ات، یعنی این ملت بزرگی که بی شمارند و حساب شده نمی توانند زندگی کنم،
8And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
9بنابران به بنده ات عقل و دانش عطا فرما تا بتوانم بر قوم برگزیدۀ تو با عدل و انصاف حکومت کنم و فرق خوب و بد را بدانم، زیرا بدون کمک تو هیچ کسی نمی تواند این قوم بزرگ را اداره کند.»
9Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
10خداوند از این خواهش سلیمان راضی شد.
10And the speech pleased the LORD, that Solomon had asked this thing.
11و به سلیمان فرمود: «بخاطریکه این خواهش را از من کردی و برای خود عمر دراز، ثروت و انتقام از دشمنانت را نخواستی و تقاضا نمودی که به تو فهم و دانش عطا کنم تا خوبی و راستی را بدانی.
11And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;
12بنابران هرچه که خواستی برایت می دهم. بتو آنقدر فهم و حکمت می بخشم که هیچ کسی مثل تو نبوده و هیچ شخصی هم بعد از تو نباشد.
12Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
13همچنان چیزهائی را هم که از من نخواستی به تو می دهم. ترا صاحب ثروت و جلال و افتخار می سازم که هیچکدام پادشاه همزمانت با تو برابری کرده نتواند.
13And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honor: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
14و اگر در راه من قدم بگذاری، فرایض و احکام مرا مثل پدرت، داود بجا آوری، من هم به تو عمر دراز می بخشم.»
14And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.
15سلیمان بیدار شد و دانست که خواب دیده است. بعد به اورشلیم رفت و در مقابل صندوق پیمان خداوند ایستاد و قربانی های سوختنی و صلح برای خداوند تقدیم کرد و برای همه خدمتگاران خود یک مهمانی داد.
15And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
16یکروز دو زن بدکاره پیش پادشاه آمدند و در حضور او ایستادند.
16Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.
17یکی از آن دو زن گفت: «آقای من، این زن و من در یک خانه زندگی می کنیم. چندی پیش طفلی بدنیا آوردم.
17And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
18سه روز بعد از تولد طفلم این زن هم صاحب یک طفل شد. ما دو نفر تنها بودیم و بجز از ما کسی دیگری در خانه نبود.
18And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.
19اما یک شب وقتی این زن خواب بود پسرش زیر پهلویش شد و مُرد.
19And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
20پس نیم شب برخاست و در حالیکه من خواب بودم پسر مرا از پهلویم گرفت و پسر مُردۀ خود را در بغل من قرار داد.
20And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.
21وقتیکه صبح برخاستم که طفل را شیر بدهم دیدم که طفل مُرده است و پسر من نیست.»
21And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.
22زن دومی گفت: «نی، طفل زنده پسر من است. طفل مرده پسر تو است.» زن اولی گفت: «نی، طفل مرده از تو است و طفل زنده پسر من است.» به این ترتیب آن دو زن در حضور پادشاه دعوا می کردند.
22And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
23بالاخره پادشاه گفت: «هر کدام تان دعوا دارد که طفل زنده از او است و طفل مرده به دیگری تعلق دارد.»
23Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
24پس گفت: «یک شمشیر برایم بیاورید.» وقتی شمشیر را آوردند،
24And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.
25پادشاه گفت: «حالا طفل را دو نیم کنید و به هر کدام نیم طفل را بدهید.»
25And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.
26در این وقت مادر اصلی، دلش برای پسرش سوخت و به پادشاه گفت: «آقای من، لطفاً طفل را نکشید. او را به این زن بدهید.» زن دومی گفت: «نی، این طفل نه از تو باشد و نه از من، دو نیمش کنید.»
26Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
27آن وقت پادشاه گفت: «طفل را نکشید او را به زن اولی بدهید ـ او مادر واقعی اش می باشد.»از این قضاوت حکیمانۀ پادشاه تمام مردم اسرائیل خبر شدند و همگی را ترس فرا گرفت، چون دانستند که آن قضاوت، نتیجۀ حکمت خداداد او بود.
27Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.
28از این قضاوت حکیمانۀ پادشاه تمام مردم اسرائیل خبر شدند و همگی را ترس فرا گرفت، چون دانستند که آن قضاوت، نتیجۀ حکمت خداداد او بود.
28And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.
