¹در همان روز بعد از آنکه شائول با داود حرف زد، یُوناتان علاقۀ زیادی به داود پیدا کرد و او را برابر جان خود دوست می داشت.

¹And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

²و شائول داود را پیش خود نگهداشت و نگذاشت که به خانۀ پدر خود برگردد.

²And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

³و یُوناتان با داود پیمان دوستی بست، زیرا او را مثل جان خود دوست می داشت.

³Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

⁴بعد یُوناتان ردای خود را از تن کشید و به داود داد و حتی شمشیر و کمان و کمربند خود را هم به او بخشید.

⁴And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

⁵و داود در هر مأموریتی که شائول به او می داد، موفق می شد. بنابران شائول او را به عنوان یکی از افسران سپاه خود مقرر کرد و از این امر هم مردم و هم سپاهیان خشنود شدند.

⁵And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.

⁶وقتیکه داود پس از کشتن فلسطینی به خانه بر می گشت، زنها از تمام شهرهای اسرائیل با ساز و دایره و دیگر آلات موسیقی رقص کنان به استقبال شائول پادشاه آمده سرود خوشی می نواختند

⁶And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music.

⁷و می خواندند: «شائول هزاران نفر را و داود ده ها هزار نفر را کشته است.»

⁷And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

⁸شائول بسیار قهر شد و سخنان آن ها خوشش نیامد و با خود گفت: «به داود اعتبار ده ها هزار را داده اند و به من هزاران را. تنها چیزیکه باقی می مانَد پادشاهی است که به او بدهند.»

⁸And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

⁹بنابران، از همان روز کینۀ داود را بدل گرفت و به او بدبین شد.

⁹And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

¹⁰روز دیگر روح پلید از جانب خداوند بر شائول آمد و او را در خانه اش دیوانه می ساخت. داود برای اینکه او را آرام سازد، مثل سابق برایش چنگ می نواخت.

¹⁰And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.

¹¹اما شائول نیزه ای را که به دست داشت، بسوی داود پرتاب کرد تا او را در دیوار میخ کند، ولی داود دو بار خود را کنار کشید.

¹¹And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.

¹²شائول از داود می ترسید، زیرا خداوند با او بود، اما از شائول جدا شده بود.

¹²And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.

¹³بنابران، شائول او را از حضور خود بیرون راند و به عنوان فرمانده هزار نفری مقررش کرد. با آنهم داود در پیش مردم محترم بود

¹³Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

¹⁴و در هر کاری که می کرد، موفق می شد، زیرا خداوند با او بود.

¹⁴And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.

¹⁵وقتی شائول موفقیت او را در همه کارها دید، زیادتر ترسید.

¹⁵Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.

¹⁶اما همه مردم اسرائیل و یهودا داود را دوست داشتند، زیرا که آن ها را کمک و راهنمائی می کرد.

¹⁶But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

¹⁷یکروز شائول به داود گفت: «میخواهم دختر بزرگ خود، میراب را به تو بدهم که زن تو شود، ولی به یک شرط که تو باید در جنگهای خداوند با دشمنان دلاورانه بجنگی.» منظور شائول این بود که داود باید به دست فلسطینی ها کشته شود نه به دست خود او.

¹⁷And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD's battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.

¹⁸داود گفت: «من چه کسی هستم و خاندان پدرم و قوم من کیست که داماد پادشاه شوم؟»

¹⁸And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?

¹⁹اما وقتی داود آماده شد که با میراب، دختر شائول عروسی کند، معلوم شد که او را قبلاً به عدرئیل داده بود.

¹⁹But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.

²⁰در عین حال، میکال، دختر دیگر شائول، عاشق داود شد. چون به شائول خبر رسید، خوشحال شد، چونکه مطابق نقشه اش بود.

²⁰And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.

²¹و با خود گفت: «دختر خود را به داود می دهم که به اینوسیله دست فلسطینی ها به او برسد و او را از بین ببرند.» بنابران، شائول بار دوم به داود پیشنهاد کرد که دامادش بشود.

²¹And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.

²²پس به خادمان خود گفت که این خبر خصوصی را به داود برسانند و آنها به داود بگویند: «پادشاه از تو بسیار راضی است و همه کارکنان او هم ترا دوست دارند. پس حالا باید پیشنهاد پادشاه را قبول کنی و داماد او بشوی.»

²²And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law.

²³وقتی خادمان شاه، پیام او را به داود رساندند، داود به آن ها گفت: «آیا منِ بیچاره و مسکین قدرت و توانائی آنرا دارم که داماد پادشاه شوم؟»

²³And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

²⁴خادمان شاه رفتند و جواب داود را به او دادند.

²⁴And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.

²⁵شائول گفت بروید و به داود بگوئید که من مهریه نمی خواهم. در عوض برای من صد پوست آلۀ تناسلی فلسطینی ها را بیاور تا از دشمنانم انتقام گرفته شود. منظور شائول این بود که داود به دست فلسطینی ها بقتل برسد.

²⁵And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

²⁶وقتی خادمان شاه به داود خبر دادند، او این پیشنهاد را پسندید و موافقه کرد که داماد شاه بشود. پس داود پیش از زمان معین،

²⁶And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired.

²⁷با سپاه خود رفت و دو صد فلسطینی را کشت و پوست آلۀ تناسلی شانرا بریده به شاه داد تا شرط او به جا آورده شود و بحیث داماد شاه قبول گردد. شائول هم دختر خود میکال را به او داد.

²⁷Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

²⁸آنگاه شائول دانست که خداوند با داود است و مردم هم او را بسیار دوست دارند،

²⁸And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul's daughter loved him.

²⁹پس زیادتر از پیشتر از داود می ترسید و دشمنی و نفرت او به داود روز بروز اضافه تر می شد.هر وقتیکه سپاه فلسطینی ها حمله می کرد، موفقیت داود در شکست آن ها زیادتر از دیگر افسران نظامی شائول بود.

²⁹And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually.

³⁰هر وقتیکه سپاه فلسطینی ها حمله می کرد، موفقیت داود در شکست آن ها زیادتر از دیگر افسران نظامی شائول بود.

³⁰Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
