¹بعد داود از نایُوت رامه پیش یُوناتان آمد و گفت: «من چه کرده ام؟ قصور من چیست و چه گناهی پیش پدرت کرده ام که قصد کشتن مرا دارد؟»

¹And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?

²یُوناتان گفت: «خدا نکند! کسی ترا نمی کشد. پدرم هیچ کار جزئی یا مهم را بدون صلاح و مشورۀ من نمی کند. پس چرا این کار را از من پنهان نماید؟ این امر حقیقت ندارد.»

²And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will show it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

³داود جواب داد: «پدرت خوب می داند که من و تو دوست هستیم، بنابران، نخواست در این مورد چیزی به تو بگوید که مبادا غمگین شوی. بنام خداوند و بسر تو قسم است که مرگ از من فقط یک قدم فاصله دارد.»

³And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

⁴یُوناتان از داود پرسید: «چه می خواهی که برایت بکنم؟»

⁴Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.

⁵داود جواب داد: «فردا مهتاب نو می شود و من باید با پدرت یکجا غذا صرف کنم، اما من فردا می روم و در مزرعه ای پنهان می شوم. و تا شام روز سوم در همانجا می مانم.

⁵And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.

⁶اگر پدرت دلیل نبودن مرا بر سر دسترخوان بپرسد، بگو که من از تو خواهش کردم تا به من اجازه بدهی که به شهر خود به بیت لحم بروم و در مراسم قربانی سالانه با خانوادۀ خود باشم.

⁶If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

⁷اگر بگوید: «خوب» آنوقت می دانم که خطری برایم نیست. اما اگر قهر شد، آنگاه مرگ من حتمی است.

⁷If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.

⁸بنابران، از تو خواهش می کنم که از روی لطف به من کمک نمائی، زیرا ما قول دوستی بهم داده ایم. و اگر خطائی از من سرزده باشد، خودت مرا بکش، اما مرا پیش پدرت نبر.»

⁸Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?

⁹یُوناتان گفت: «باور نمیکنم! اگر می دانستم که پدرم قصد بدی به تو دارد، آیا به تو نمی گفتم؟»

⁹And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?

¹⁰داود گفت: «چطور بدانم که پدرت بالای من قهر است یا نی؟»

¹⁰Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly?

¹¹یُوناتان به داود گفت: «بیا که به مزرعه برویم.» و هر دو براه افتادند.

¹¹And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

¹²یُوناتان به داود گفت: «در حضور خداوند، خدای اسرائیل به تو وعده می دهم که فردا یا پس فردا، همراه پدرم دربارۀ تو حرف می زنم و فوراً به تو اطلاع می دهم که او در مورد تو چه فکر می کند.

¹²And Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and show it thee;

¹³اگر دیدم که قهر است و قصد کشتن ترا دارد، به جان خودم قسم می خورم که به تو خبر می دهم تا بتوانی بسلامتی فرار کنی و خداوند یار و نگهبان تو باشد، همانطوریکه از پدرم بوده است!

¹³The LORD do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will show it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

¹⁴و یادت باشد، پس از آنکه خداوند همه دشمنانت را از روی زمین محو کرد، دوستی و مهربانی خداوندی را نه تنها به من، بلکه به بازماندگانم هم نشان بدهی.»

¹⁴And thou shalt not only while yet I live show me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not:

¹⁵پس یُوناتان با خاندان داود پیمان بست و داود قسم سخت خورد که اگر به عهد خود وفا نکنند، لعنت باد بر آن ها.

¹⁵But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.

¹⁶و یُوناتان دوباره داود را قسم داد و این بار بخاطر محبتی بود که با او داشت، زیرا داود را برابر جان خود دوست می داشت.

¹⁶So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the LORD even require it at the hand of David's enemies.

¹⁷یُوناتان گفت: «فردا مهتاب نو می شود و چون به سر دسترخوان نباشی جایت خالی می باشد.

¹⁷And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

¹⁸و تا پس فردا همگی از غیبت تو آگاه می شوند و دلیل آنرا می پرسند. پس مثل پیشتر در مخفی گاه خود، در کنار تودۀ سنگ بمان.

¹⁸Then Jonathan said to David, To morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.

¹⁹من می آیم و سه تیر به آن طرف طوری پرتاب می کنم که گویا هدفی را نشانه گرفته ام.

¹⁹And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.

²⁰آنگاه یکنفر را می فرستم که تیرها را پیدا کند. و اگر به او بگویم: «تیر ها به این طرف تو اند، برو آن ها را بیاور.» پس بدانی که خیر و خیریت است و مطمئن باش که هیچ خطری متوجه تو نیست.

²⁰And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.

²¹و اگر به او بگویم: «پیشتر برو، تیرها در آن طرف تو اند.» به این معنی است که تو باید فوراً از اینجا بروی، زیرا خدا ترا نجات داده است.

²¹And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; as the LORD liveth.

²²و از خدا می خواهم که به ما کمک کند تا به عهد و پیمان خود وفادار باشیم، زیرا که او شاهد پیمان ما بوده است.»

²²But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the LORD hath sent thee away.

²³پس داود خود را در مزرعه پنهان کرد و وقتیکه مهتاب نو شد، پادشاه برای صرف غذا آماده شد

²³And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD be between thee and me for ever.

²⁴و قرار عادت بجای مخصوص خود کنار دیوار نشست. یُوناتان مقابل او قرار گرفت و اَبنیر پهلوی شائول نشست. اما جای داود خالی بود.

²⁴So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.

²⁵شائول در آنروز چیزی نگفت و گمان کرد که حادثه ای برای داود رُخداده است و ممکن است برای شرکت در این مراسم پاک نبوده است. بلی، حتماً همین طور است.

²⁵And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.

²⁶اما فردای آن، یعنی در روز دوم ماه، باز هم جای داود خالی بود. پس شائول از پسر خود یُوناتان پرسید: «چرا پسر یسی برای صرف غذا نمی آید؟ نه دیروز اینجا بود و نه امروز.»

²⁶Nevertheless Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.

²⁷یُوناتان جواب داد: «داود پیش من بسیار زاری کرد که به او اجازه بدهم به بیت لحم برود؛

²⁷And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?

²⁸او از من خواهش کرد و گفت: «اجازه بده که بروم، زیرا خانوادۀ من می خواهد مراسم قربانی را برگزار کند و برادرم به من امر کرده است که در آنجا حاضر باشم. بنابران، اگر بمن لطف داری بگذار که بروم و برادرانم را ببینم.» همین دلیل او نتوانست که برای نان خوردن بحضور شاه حاضر شود.»

²⁸And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem:

²⁹آنگاه شائول بر یُوناتان بسیار قهر شد و به او گفت: «ای ناخلف! تو پسر یسی را برای این انتخاب کردی که خود را رسوا کنی و مادرت را بی آبرو.

²⁹And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favor in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king's table.

³⁰و تا که پسر یسی بروی زمین زنده باشد، تو به پادشاهی نمی رسی. پس برو و او را به نزد من بیاور و او باید کشته شود.»

³⁰Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?

³¹و یُوناتان از پدر خود پرسید: «چرا او باید کشته شود؟ گناه او چیست؟»

³¹For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.

³²آنوقت شائول نیزه ای را که در دست داشت بقصد کشتن او بطرف او انداخت. چون یُوناتان دانست که پدرش دست از کشتن داود نمی کشد،

³²And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?

³³بسیار قهر شد و از سر دسترخوان برخاست و در روز دوم ماه هم چیزی نخورد، زیرا بخاطر داود خیلی غمگین بود و پدرش هم او را خجالت داده بود.

³³And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

³⁴صبح روز دیگر، یُوناتان با یک پسر جوان به وعده گاه خود، در مزرعه پیش داود رفت.

³⁴So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

³⁵به جوان گفت: «برو تیری را که می زنم پیدا کن.» آن جوان در حالیکه می دوید، یُوناتان تیر را طوری می انداخت که از او دورتر می افتاد.

³⁵And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

³⁶وقتی آن جوان به جائی رسید که تیر یُوناتان خورده بود،

³⁶And he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

³⁷یُوناتان از پشت سر او صدا کرد: «زود شو. عجله کن. ایستاد نشو.» جوان تیرها را جمع کرد و پیش آقای خود آمد.

³⁷And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?

³⁸اما البته آن جوان مقصد یُوناتان را نفهمید. فقط یُوناتان و داود می دانستند که چه می کنند.

³⁸And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

³⁹بعد یُوناتان اسلحۀ خود را به آن جوان داد و به او گفت که آنرا به شهر ببرد.

³⁹But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

⁴⁰بمجردیکه آن جوان از آنجا رفت، داود از کنار تودۀ سنگ برخاست روی بخاک افتاد و سه مرتبه سجده کرد. آندو یکدیگر را بوسیدند و یکجا بگریه افتادند. و غم و غصۀ داود زیادتر از یُوناتان بود.یُوناتان به داود گفت: «بخیر بروی. ما بنام خداوند قسم خورده ایم و من و تو خود را و اولادۀ خود را برای همیشه به دست او سپرده ایم.» بعد هردو از هم جدا شدند و یُوناتان به شهر برگشت.

⁴⁰And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.

⁴¹یُوناتان به داود گفت: «بخیر بروی. ما بنام خداوند قسم خورده ایم و من و تو خود را و اولادۀ خود را برای همیشه به دست او سپرده ایم.» بعد هردو از هم جدا شدند و یُوناتان به شهر برگشت.

⁴¹And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.

⁴²And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
