1در آن زمان که آپولُس در شهر قرنتس بود، پولُس از راه خشکه مسافرت می کرد تا به اِفِسُس رسید و در آنجا با تعدادی شاگردان برخورد کرد.
1And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2از آنها پرسید: «آیا وقتی ایمان آوردید، روح القدس را یافتید؟» آن ها در جواب گفتند: «نخیر، ما حتی خبر هم نداشتیم که روح القدسی وجود دارد.»
2He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3پولُس به ایشان گفت: «پس چه نوع تعمیدی گرفتید؟» گفتند: «تعمید یحیی.»
3And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4پولُس فرمود: «تعمیدی که یحیی می داد نشانۀ توبه بود و او به مردم می گفت که به آن شخصی که بعد از او می آید، یعنی به عیسی، ایمان بیاورند.»
4Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5وقتی آن ها این را شنیدند به نام عیسی خداوند تعمید گرفتند
5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6و هنگامی که پولُس بر سر آنها دست نهاد روح القدس بر آنها نازل شد و به زبانها صحبت کرده و پیشگویی می نمودند.
6And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7این مردان، جمعاً حدود دوازده نفر بودند.
7And all the men were about twelve.
8پولُس به کنیسه رفت و مدت سه ماه در آن شهر با شجاعت تمام صحبت می کرد و با استدلال مباحثه می نمود و می کوشید که شنوندگان را در مورد پادشاهی خدا متقاعد سازد.
8And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
9اما عده ای از آنها سنگدل بودند و ایمان نمی آوردند و برعکس، از طریقه خدا پیش مردم بد گوئی می کردند. بنابراین پولُس از آنها کناره گیری کرد و شاگردان را به جای دیگری برد و همه روزه در تالار سخنرانی طیرانُس مجلس بحث برپا می کرد.
9But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
10این پروگرام به مدت دو سال ادامه داشت و نتیجه آن این شد که جمیع ساکنان ایالت آسیا اعم از یهودی و یونانی کلام خداوند را شنیدند.
10And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
11خدا به دست پولُس معجزات بزرگ نشان می داد.
11And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
12به طوری که مردم دستمالها و پیش بندهایی را که با بدن پولُس تماس یافته بود، می بردند و بر بدن مریضان می گذاشتند و آنها از امراض خود شفا می یافتند و ارواح ناپاک از آنها خارج می گشت.
12So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
13اما در این زمان عده ای از جادوگران سیار یهودی خواستند که با ذکر نام عیسی خداوند ارواح ناپاک را اخراج نمایند. آنها چنین می گفتند: «ترا به عیسی که پولُس بشارت می دهد قسم می دهم.»
13Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the LORD Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
14و هفت نفر از پسران شخصی بنام اِسکیوا که یکی از سران کاهنان بود این روش را به کار می بردند.
14And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.
15اما روح ناپاک جواب داد: «من عیسی را می شناسم و دربارۀ پولُس اطلاع دارم اما شما چه کاره هستید؟»
15And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
16مردی که روح ناپاک داشت با چنان قدرتی به آنها حمله کرد که همه مغلوب شدند و برهنه و زخمی از آن خانه فرار کردند.
16And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17این موضوع به گوش همه ساکنان اِفِسُس اعم از یهودی و یونانی رسید و همه را به ترس شدید انداخت و نام عیسی خداوند در میان ایشان بیشتر مورد احترام قرارگرفت.
17And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18عدۀ زیادی از کسانی که ایمان آورده بودند پیش آمدند و اعتراف کردند که پیش از آن به جادوگری مشغول بودند.
18And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.
19و عدۀ زیادی از ساحران کتب جادوگری خود را جمع کردند و پیش مردم سوزانیدند. کتابها را که قیمت گذاشتند، معلوم شد که ارزش آن ها برابر پنجاه هزار سکۀ نقره بود.
19Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20به این ترتیب کلام خداوند منتشر می شد و قدرت بیشتری می یافت.
20So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.
21پس از این وقایع پولُس تصمیم گرفت، که از مقدونیه و یونان دیدن نماید و از آنجا به اورشلیم برود. او گفت: «بعد از رفتن به آنجا شهر روم را هم باید ببینم.»
21After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.
22پس دو نفر از همکاران خود یعنی تیموتاوس و ارسطوس را به مقدونیه فرستاد و خود او مدت بیشتری در ایالت آسیا اقامت نمود.
22So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.
23در این ایام سر و صدای زیادی دربارۀ این طریقه در اِفِسُس بلند شد.
23And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
24در آنجا شخصی بود بنام دیمیتریوسِ نقره ساز، که تصاویر نقره ای از بتکدۀ آرتمیس (دیانا) می ساخت و به این وسیله برای صنعتگران شغل خوب و مفیدی فراهم ساخته بود.
24For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;
25پس او انجمنی مرکب از آنها و همچنین صاحبان حرفه های مشابه تشکیل داد و خطاب به ایشان گفت: «ای آقایان، می دانید که سعادت زندگی ما وابسته به این صنعت است
25Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.
26و به طوری که می بینید و می شنوید، این پولُس با تبلیغات خود نه فقط در شهر ما اِفِسُس بلکه تقریباً در سرتاسر ایالت آسیا عدۀ فراوانی را به طرف خود کشیده و گمراه ساخته است و می گوید که چیزهای ساخته شده به دست انسان، به هیچ وجه خدایان نیستند.
26Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:
27پس خطر تنها در این نیست که شغل ما از اعتبار بیفتد بلکه این خطر هم هست که معبد الهۀ بزرگ ما آرتمیس بی ارزش گردد و طولی نخواهد کشید که عظمت خود الهه که مورد پرستش تمام مردم ایالت آسیا و سراسر جهان است از بین برود.»
27So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
28وقتی آن ها این را شنیدند غضبناک گشتند و فریاد می زدند: «بزرگ است آرتیمیسِ اِفِسُسیان.»
28And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
29شهر به هم ریخت و مردم غایوس و آرِستَرخُس را که از اهالی مقدونیه و از همراهان پولُس بودند دستگیر کردند و کشان کشان به تماشاخانۀ شهر بردند.
29And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
30پولُس می خواست که با جمعیت روبرو شود، اما ایمانداران نگذاشتند.
30And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
31حتی عده ای از بزرگان ایالت آسیا که با پولُس رفاقت داشتند، پیش او فرستاده و اصرار کردند که در تماشاخانۀ شهر جان خود را خطر نیندازد.
31And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.
32دراین میان دسته ای یک چیز می گفتند و دسته ای چیز دیگر، زیرا آن جماعت بسیار آشفته بود و اغلب آنها اصلاً دلیل جمع شدن خود را نمی دانستند.
32Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused: and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.
33اما عده ای گمان بردند اسکندر مسئول است، چون یهودیان او را پیش انداخته بودند. پس او با اشاره دست از مردم خواست که خاموش باشند و کوشش او این بود که در پیش این جماعت دفاع نماید.
33And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.
34اما وقتی مردم فهمیدند که اسکندر یهودی است، همه با یک صدا به مدت دو ساعت پشت سر هم فریاد می کردند: «بزرگ است آرتیمیسِ اِفِسُسیان.»
34But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
35سرانجام شاروال مردم را خاموش کرد و گفت: «ای مردان اِفِسُس، همه بدون استثناء می دانند که شهر ما اِفِسُس حافظ بتکدۀ آرتیمیسِ بزرگ و حافظ سنگ مقدسی است که از آسمان به زمین آمده است.
35And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
36و از آنجا که این حقایق غیر قابل انکار است، صلاح تان بر این است که آرام باشید و ندانسته کاری نکنید.
36Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
37این مردانی که شما به عنوان ملامت به اینجا آورده اید، نه به معبد ما دستبرد زده اند و نه نسبت به الهۀ ما سخن کفرآمیز گفته اند.
37For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.
38پس اگر دیمیتریوس و همکارانش ادعای بر ضد کسی دارند، درِ محاکم باز است و فرمانداران نیز حاضرند، آن ها می توانند در آنجا بر ضد یکدیگر شکایت نمایند.
38Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.
39اگر مسائل دیگری در پیش است، باید در یک جلسۀ رسمی حل و فصل شود.
39But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.
40زیرا این خطر در پیش است که به خاطر کار امروز ملامت به اخلالگری شویم. در حالی که هیچ دلیلی برای آن وجود ندارد و هیچ جوابی هم برای این شورش نداریم.»این را گفت و حاضران مجلس را رخصت کرد.
40For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.
41این را گفت و حاضران مجلس را رخصت کرد.
41And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
