1در این جهان شرارت و بدی های زیادی را دیدم.
1There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
2خدا به بعضی کسان ثروت، دارائی و عزت می دهد طوریکه در زندگی کمبودی نمی داشته باشند، اما در عین حال خدا نمی خواهد که آن ها از دارائی و ثروت خود لذت ببرند، در عوض، بیگانه ای می آید و از ثروت آن ها استفاده می کند. این هم بیهوده است و فایده ای ندارد.
2A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
3اگر شخصی یکصد فرزند بدنیا آورد و سالهای زیادی زندگی کند، اما از خوشی های دنیا بهره ای نگیرد و جنازۀ آبرومندانه ای برایش ترتیب ندهند، می گویم که طفل سِقط شده از او بهتر است.
3If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
4زیرا که او بیهوده می آید و به تاریکی می رود و نام او در ظلمت مخفی می گردد.
4For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
5روشنی آفتاب را هرگز نمی بیند و از وجود آن خبر نمی شود، اما اقلاً غم و درد زمانه را ندیده و آسوده است.
5Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.
6برعلاوه، اگر آن شخص دو هزار سال هم زندگی کند، ولی در زندگی قانع و خوش نباشد، چه فایده ای دارد؟ سرانجام همگی به یکجا می روند.
6Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
7اشخاص دانا و احمق یکسان، برای شکم خود زحمت زیاد می کشند، ولی قانع و سیر نمی شوند.
7All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
8هر دو یک مشکل دارند، اما شخص فقیر و دانا دارای زندگی بهتری می باشد.
8For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
9بهتر است به چیزی که دارید قانع باشید و از حرص و آرزوی دارائی زیاد بپرهیزید، زیرا کار بیهوده ای است.
9Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
10سرنوشت هر چیزی از ازل تعیین شده است و ما نمی توانیم با خدائی که تواناتر از همه و سرنوشت ما را تعیین کرده است، دعوا کنیم.
10That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
11حرف زدنِ زیاد فایده ای ندارد، پس بهتر است که اصلاً حرفی نزنیم.زیرا کسی نمی داند که در این عمر کوتاه او که مثل سایه زودگذر است، چه چیزی خوب است و چه کسی می تواند پیشگوئی کند که وضع دنیا بعد از او چگونه خواهد بود.
11Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
12زیرا کسی نمی داند که در این عمر کوتاه او که مثل سایه زودگذر است، چه چیزی خوب است و چه کسی می تواند پیشگوئی کند که وضع دنیا بعد از او چگونه خواهد بود.
12For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
