¹تنها یک شخص حکیم می تواند معنی هر چیزی را بداند. حکمت روی انسان را روشن می سازد و سختی چهرۀ او تبدیل می شود.

¹Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.

²چون سوگند وفاداری خورده اید، از امر پادشاه اطاعت کنید.

²I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.

³پادشاه هر کاری را که بخواهد می تواند بکند، پس از وظیفه ای که بدوش شما گذاشته است، سرپیچی نکنید.

³Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.

⁴فرمان پادشاه قدرت دارد و کسی نمی تواند به او بگوید: «چه می کنی؟»

⁴Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?

⁵کسی که فرمانبردار او باشد ضرر نمی بیند و مرد دانا می داند که چه وقت و چطور امر او را بجا آورد،

⁵Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.

⁶زیرا برای اجرای هر امری، هرچند مشکل و به مفاد انسان نباشد، یک وقت معین و طریق خاصی به کار است.

⁶Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.

⁷هیچ کسی از آینده خبر ندارد و کسی هم نمی تواند به او بگوید که در آینده چه رخ می دهد.

⁷For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?

⁸کسی نیست که بر روح تسلط داشته باشد تا روح خود را نگهدارد و کسی نمی داند که چه روزی مرگ او فرا می رسد. مرگ، جنگی است که از آن گریزی نیست و هیچ کسی نمی تواند با فریب و حیله خود را از آن برهاند.

⁸There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.

⁹من در مورد آنچه که در جهان رخ می دهد، فکر کردم و دیدم که چطور یک انسان بر انسان دیگر به جهت ضررش حکمرانی می کند.

⁹All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.

¹⁰آنگاه دیدم که مردم شریر مُردند و زیر خاک رفتند، اما مردمی که پس از مراسم تدفین آن ها برگشتند، از آن ها در همان شهری که ظلم می کردند، تعریف و توصیف نمودند. این هم یک کار پوچ و بیهوده است.

¹⁰And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.

¹¹چرا مردم همیشه آماده برای گناه کردن هستند؟ بخاطری که گناهکار بزودی جزا نمی بیند.

¹¹Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

¹²گرچه ممکن است یک گناهکار صد بار گناه کند و باز هم زنده بماند، اما آن کسانی که از خدا می ترسند و به او احترام می کنند، سعادتمند می شوند.

¹²Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:

¹³کسی که گناه می کند، روی سعادت را نمی بیند. عمر او مثل سایه ای زودگذر بوده در جوانی می میرد، زیرا از خدا نمی ترسد و به او احترام ندارد.

¹³But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.

¹⁴بیهودگی دیگری را هم در دنیا دیدم که بسا اوقات مجازاتی را که باید گناهکاران ببینند، به مردم راستکار می رسد و مکافات راستکاران را مردم بدکار می گیرند. این هم معنی ندارد.

¹⁴There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

¹⁵پس من به این نتیجه رسیدم که انسان باید بخورد و بنوشد و لذت ببرد تا اقلاً در ميان زحمات‏ این زندگی که خدا در دنیا به او داده است، نتیجه ای بگیرد.

¹⁵Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.

¹⁶در زندگی خود شب و روز سعی و تلاش کردم تا همه چیزی را که در دنیا رخ می دهند، بدانم و حکمت بیاموزم.اما تلاش من بجائی نرسید و دانستم که انسان کارهای خدا را درک کرده نمی تواند و هر قدر زیادتر بکوشیم باز هم از درک کارهای او عاجز می مانیم. مردم حکیم هم ادعا می کنند ‏که همه را می دانند، ولی فکر آن ها بیهوده است.

¹⁶When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)

¹⁷اما تلاش من بجائی نرسید و دانستم که انسان کارهای خدا را درک کرده نمی تواند و هر قدر زیادتر بکوشیم باز هم از درک کارهای او عاجز می مانیم. مردم حکیم هم ادعا می کنند ‏که همه را می دانند، ولی فکر آن ها بیهوده است.

¹⁷Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
