¹چندین سال بعد، در دوران پادشاهی اُردشیر پادشاه فارس، شخصی بود به نام عِزرا. او از نسل هارون کاهن اعظم و شجره نامه اش به این شرح بود: عِزرا پسر سَرایا، پسر عَزریا، پسر حِلقیا،

¹Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

²پسر شلوم، پسر صادوق، پسر اَخِیطُوب،

²The son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,

³پسر اَمَریا، پسر عَزریا، پسر مِرایوت،

³The son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,

⁴پسر زِرَحیا، پسر عزی، پسر بُقی،

⁴The son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki,

⁵پسر اَبیشُوع، پسر فِنیحاس، پسر اَلِعازار، پسر هارون.

⁵The son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest:

⁶عِزرا شخصی بود فاضل و دارای دانش عمیق در شریعتی که خداوند، خدای اسرائیل، به موسی داده بود. چون عِزرا از برکت خداوند، خدای خود، برخوردار بود هرچه می خواست پادشاه فارس به او می داد. در هفتمین سال سلطنت اُردشیر، عِزرا به اتفاق گروهی از یهودیان که شامل کاهنان، لاویان، سرایندگان، نگهبانان و کارکنان و خادمین عبادتگاه بود از بابل عازم اورشلیم شد.

⁶This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.

⁷آن ها در اولین روز ماه اول، بابل را ترک کردند و با کمک خدا در روز اول ماه پنجم وارد اورشلیم شدند.

⁷And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

⁸عِزرا تمام زندگی خود را برای مطالعۀ شریعت خداوند و تعلیم دادن احکام آن به مردم اسرائیل صرف کرده بود.

⁸And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.

⁹اُردشیر پادشاه نوشتۀ زیر را به عِزرا، کاهن فاضل که دانشی عمیق از قوانین و احکام الهی داشت، داد:

⁹For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.

¹⁰«از طرف اُردشیر پادشاه به عِزرای کاهن و عالم در شریعت خدای آسمان.

¹⁰For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.

¹¹من به این وسیله فرمان می دهم که در سرتاسر امپراطوری من به تمام قوم اسرائیل و کاهنان و لاویانی که مایل هستند همراه تو بروند، اجازه داده شود به اورشلیم برگردند.

¹¹Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest, the scribe, even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD, and of his statutes to Israel.

¹²من، به اتفاق هفت مشاور خویش به تو ماًموریت می دهیم تا به اورشلیم و یهودیه بروی و وضع آنها را بر رسی کنی و ببینی آیا شریعت خدایت که به تو سپرده شده است اطاعت می شود یا نه.

¹²Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace, and at such a time.

¹³تو باید هدایای طلا و نقره ای را که من و مشاورینم مایلیم به خدای اسرائیل که عبادتگاهش در اورشلیم است تقدیم بنمائیم، با خود ببری.

¹³I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.

¹⁴تو همچنین باید تمام طلا و نقره ای را که در سراسر ایالت بابل جمع می کنی و هدایائی را که قوم اسرائیل و کاهنان آن ها برای عبادتگاه خدای خود در اورشلیم می دهند با خود ببری.

¹⁴Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand;

¹⁵تو باید با دقت آن ها را صرف خرید گاو، قوچ، بره، غلات و شراب نمائی و آن ها را بر قربانگاهِ عبادتگاه اورشلیم تقدیم کنی.

¹⁵And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem,

¹⁶تو می توانی آنچه را که از طلا و نقره باقی می ماند مطابق ارادۀ خدای خود برای تهیۀ هرچه که خودت و مردمت می خواهید صرف کنی.

¹⁶And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem:

¹⁷تو باید تمام ظروفی را که برای استفاده در خدمات عبادتگاه به تو داده شده در اورشلیم به خدا تقدیم کنی.

¹⁷That thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meat offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.

¹⁸و هر چیز دیگری که برای عبادتگاه نیاز داری می توانی از خزانۀ سلطنتی بگیری.

¹⁸And whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God.

¹⁹من به تمام خزانه داران ایالت غربی دریای فرات امر می دهم که هرچه عِزرای کاهن و عالم در شریعت خدای آسمان می خواهد،

¹⁹The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem.

²⁰یعنی تا سه هزار و چهار صد کیلوگرام نقره، ده هزار کیلوگرام گندم، دو هزار لیتر شراب، دو هزار لیتر روغن زیتون و نمک فوراً به او داده شود.

²⁰And whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have occasion to bestow, bestow it out of the king's treasure house.

²¹در تهیۀ هر چیز دیگری که خدای آسمان برای عبادتگاه خود می خواهد باید خیلی دقیق باشی و نباید کاری کنی که او نسبت به من و کسانی که بعد از من حکومت می کنند، خشمگین شود.

²¹And I, even I Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that whatsoever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily,

²²اخذ هرنوع مالیات از کاهنان، لاویان، سرایندگان، نگهبانان و هر که به عبادتگاه وابسته است اکیداً ممنوع می باشد.

²²Unto an hundred talents of silver, and to an hundred measures of wheat, and to an hundred baths of wine, and to an hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much.

²³تو، عِزرا، با حکمتی که خدا به تو داده است حاکمان و داورانی را که بر طبق شریعت خدای تو زیست کرده اند، برای حکومت بر تمام مردم ایالت غربی دریای فرات انتخاب کن. تو باید آن شریعت را به هر که نمی داند بیاموزی.

²³Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?

²⁴اگر کسی شریعت خدای تو یا قوانین پادشاه را اطاعت نکند باید فوراً به مجازات برسد. مجازات چنین فردی ممکن است مرگ، یا تبعید، یا مصادرۀ اموال یا زندان باشد.»

²⁴Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.

²⁵عِزرا گفت: «سپاس بر نام خداوند، خدای اجداد ما! او پادشاه را ترغیب کرد که به عبادتگاهش در اورشلیم احترام گذارد.با لطف خدا، من مورد توجه پادشاه و مشاورینش و تمام ماًمورین عالیرتبۀ او قرار گرفته ام. خداوند، خدایم، به من شهامت بخشید و من توانستم بسیاری از سران قوم اسرائیل را تشویق کنم تا همراه من برگردند.»

²⁵And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not.

²⁶با لطف خدا، من مورد توجه پادشاه و مشاورینش و تمام ماًمورین عالیرتبۀ او قرار گرفته ام. خداوند، خدایم، به من شهامت بخشید و من توانستم بسیاری از سران قوم اسرائیل را تشویق کنم تا همراه من برگردند.»

²⁶And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.

²⁷Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem:

²⁸And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king's mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.
