1ابراهیم از ممری کوچ کرد و به جنوب کنعان رفت و در محلی بین قادِش و شور ساکن شد. مدتی بعد، وقتی که در جرار زندگی می کردند،
1And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.
2او دربارۀ زن خود ساره گفت: «او خواهر من است.» بنابرین ابی ملک سلطان جرار فرستاد تا ساره را برای او بیاورند.
2And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
3یک شب خدا در رؤیا به ابی ملک ظاهر شد و فرمود: «تو خواهی مُرد، زیرا این زنی که گرفته ای شوهر دارد.»
3But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.
4ابی ملک هنوز با ساره همخواب نشده بود. پس گفت: «ای خداوند من بی گناهم. آیا من و مردمانم را نابود می کنی؟
4But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, LORD, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?
5ابراهیم خودش گفت که این زن خواهر او است و آن زن هم همین را گفت. من این کار را از روی راستی کرده ام و گناهی مرتکب نشده ام.»
5Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.
6خدا در رؤیا به او جواب داد: «بلی، من می دانم که تو از روی بی خبری این کار را کرده ای و به همین دلیل تو را از گناه باز داشتم و نگذاشتم به او نزدیک شوی.
6And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
7اما حالا، این زن را به نزد شوهرش بفرست. او یک نبی است، برای تو دعا می کند و تو نمی میری. اما اگر تو زن را پس ندهی، تو و تمام مردمانت هلاک می شوید.»
7Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
8صبح روز بعد ابی ملک تمام درباریان را فرا خواند و برای آن ها تعریف کرد که چه واقعه شده است. همۀ آن ها ترسیدند.
8Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.
9پس ابی ملک ابراهیم را صدا کرد و از او پرسید: «این چه کاری بود که با ما کردی؟ من به تو چه بدی کرده ام که کم بود تو این بلا را بر سر من و سرزمین من بیاوری؟ هیچ کس چنین کاری نمی کند که تو با من کردی.
9Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
10تو چرا این کار را کردی؟»
10And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?
11ابراهیم جواب داد: «من فکر کردم در این جا کسی از خدا نمی ترسد و مرا خواهند کشت تا زنم را از من بگیرند.
11And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.
12در حقیقت او خواهر من هم هست. او دختر پدر من است، ولی دختر مادرم نیست و من با او ازدواج کرده ام.
12And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
13پس وقتی خدا مرا از خانۀ پدری ام به سرزمین بیگانه فرستاد، من به زنم گفتم: تو می توانی لطف خود را به من این طور نشان بدهی که به همه بگوئی: او برادر من است.»
13And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt show unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
14بعد از این ابی ملک ساره را به ابراهیم سپرد و علاوه بر آن گوسفندان و گاوها و بزها و غلامان بسیاری به او بخشید.
14And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.
15همچنین به ابراهیم گفت: «تمام این سرزمین مال من است. در هر جای آن که می خواهی اقامت کن.»
15And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.
16او به ساره گفت: «من به نشانۀ این که تو بی گناه هستی، هزار مثقال نقره به برادرت می دهم تا همه بدانند که تو هیچ کار خلافی نکرده ای.»به خاطر آنچه برای ساره، زن ابراهیم اتفاق افتاده بود، خداوند تمام زنان اهل خانۀ ابی ملک را نازا کرد. بنابرین ابراهیم برای ابی ملک دعا کرد و خدا او را با زن و کنیزانش شفا داد تا بتوانند صاحب اولاد شوند.
16And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.
17به خاطر آنچه برای ساره، زن ابراهیم اتفاق افتاده بود، خداوند تمام زنان اهل خانۀ ابی ملک را نازا کرد. بنابرین ابراهیم برای ابی ملک دعا کرد و خدا او را با زن و کنیزانش شفا داد تا بتوانند صاحب اولاد شوند.
17So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.
18For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.
