¹But a certain man in Caesarea, -- by name Cornelius, a centurion of the band called Italic,

¹Maður nokkur var í Sesareu, Kornelíus að nafni, hundraðshöfðingi í ítölsku hersveitinni.

²pious, and fearing God with all his house, [both] giving much alms to the people, and supplicating God continually,

²Hann var trúmaður og dýrkaði Guð og heimafólk hans allt. Gaf hann lýðnum miklar ölmusur og var jafnan á bæn til Guðs.

³-- saw plainly in a vision, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming unto him, and saying to him, Cornelius.

³Dag einn um nón sá hann berlega í sýn engil Guðs koma inn til sín, er sagði við hann: ,,Kornelíus!``

⁴But he, having fixed his eyes upon him, and become full of fear, said, What is it, Lord? And he said to him, Thy prayers and thine alms have gone up for a memorial before God.

⁴Hann starði á hann, varð óttasleginn og sagði: ,,Hvað er það, herra?`` Engillinn svaraði: ,,Bænir þínar og ölmusur eru stignar upp til Guðs, og hann minnist þeirra.

⁵And now send men to Joppa and fetch Simon, who is surnamed Peter.

⁵Send þú nú menn til Joppe og lát sækja Símon nokkurn, er kallast Pétur.

⁶He lodges with a certain Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.

⁶Hann gistir hjá Símoni nokkrum sútara, sem á hús við sjóinn.``

⁷And when the angel who was speaking to him had departed, having called two of his household and a pious soldier of those who were constantly with him,

⁷Þegar engillinn, sem talaði við hann, var farinn, kallaði hann á tvo heimamenn sína og guðrækinn hermann, einn þeirra, er honum voru handgengnir,

⁸and related all things to them, he sent them to Joppa.

⁹And on the morrow, as these were journeying and drawing near to the city, Peter went up on the house to pray, about the sixth hour.

⁹Daginn eftir, er þeir voru á leiðinni og nálguðust bæinn, gekk Pétur upp á húsþakið um hádegi til að biðjast fyrir.

¹⁰And he became hungry and desired to eat. But as they were making ready an ecstasy came upon him:

¹¹and he beholds the heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as a great sheet, [bound] by [the] four corners [and] let down to the earth;

¹¹sá himininn opinn og hlut nokkurn koma niður, líkan stórum dúki. Var hann látinn síga til jarðar á fjórum skautum.

¹²in which were all the quadrupeds and creeping things of the earth, and the fowls of the heaven.

¹²Þar voru á alls kyns ferfætt dýr, skriðdýr jarðar, svo og fuglar himins.

¹³And there was a voice to him, Rise, Peter, slay and eat.

¹³Og honum barst rödd: ,,Slátra nú, Pétur, og et!``

¹⁴And Peter said, In no wise, Lord; for I have never eaten anything common or unclean.

¹⁴Pétur sagði: ,,Nei, Drottinn, engan veginn, aldrei hef ég etið neitt vanheilagt né óhreint.``

¹⁵And [there was] a voice again the second time to him, What God has cleansed, do not *thou* make common.

¹⁵Aftur barst honum rödd: ,,Eigi skalt þú kalla það vanheilagt, sem Guð hefur lýst hreint!``

¹⁶And this took place thrice, and the vessel was straightway taken up into heaven.

¹⁶Þetta gjörðist þrem sinnum, og jafnskjótt var hluturinn upp numinn til himins.

¹⁷And as Peter doubted in himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold also the men who were sent by Cornelius, having sought out the house of Simon, stood at the gate,

¹⁷Meðan Pétur var að reyna að ráða í, hvað þessi sýn ætti að merkja, höfðu sendimenn Kornelíusar spurt uppi hús Símonar. Nú stóðu þeir fyrir dyrum úti

¹⁸and having called [some one], they inquired if Simon who was surnamed Peter was lodged there.

¹⁹But as Peter continued pondering over the vision, the Spirit said to him, Behold, three men seek thee;

¹⁹Pétur var enn að hugsa um sýnina, þegar andinn sagði við hann: ,,Menn eru að leita þín.

²⁰but rise up, go down, and go with them, nothing doubting, because *I* have sent them.

²⁰Flýt þér nú ofan og far hiklaust með þeim, því að ég hef sent þá.``

²¹And Peter going down to the men said, Behold, *I* am he whom ye seek: what is the cause for which ye come?

²¹Pétur gekk þá niður til mannanna og sagði: ,,Ég er sá sem þér leitið að. Hvers vegna eruð þér komnir hér?``

²²And they said, Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man, and fearing God, and borne witness to by the whole nation of the Jews, has been divinely instructed by a holy angel to send for thee to his house, and hear words from thee.

²²Þeir sögðu: ,,Kornelíus hundraðshöfðingi, réttlátur maður og guðhræddur og orðsæll af allri Gyðinga þjóð, fékk bendingu frá heilögum engli að senda eftir þér og fá þig heim til sín og heyra, hvað þú hefðir að flytja.``

²³Having therefore invited them in, he lodged them. And on the morrow, rising up he went away with them, and certain of the brethren from Joppa went with him.

²³Þá bauð hann þeim inn og lét þá gista. Daginn eftir tók hann sig upp og fór með þeim og nokkrir bræður frá Joppe með honum.

²⁴And on the morrow they came to Caesarea. But Cornelius was looking for them, having called together his kinsmen and [his] intimate friends.

²⁴Næsta dag komu þeir til Sesareu. Kornelíus bjóst við þeim og hafði boðið til sín frændum og virktavinum.

²⁵And when Peter was now coming in, Cornelius met him, and falling down did [him] homage.

²⁵Þegar Pétur kom, fór Kornelíus á móti honum, féll til fóta honum og veitti honum lotningu.

²⁶But Peter made him rise, saying, Rise up: *I* myself also am a man.

²⁶Pétur reisti hann upp og sagði: ,,Statt upp, ég er maður sem þú.``

²⁷And he went in, talking with him, and found many gathered together.

²⁷Og hann ræddi við hann og gekk inn og fann þar marga menn saman komna.

²⁸And he said to them, *Ye* know how it is unlawful for a Jew to be joined or come to one of a strange race, and to *me* God has shewn to call no man common or unclean.

²⁸Hann sagði við þá: ,,Þér vitið, að Gyðingi er bannað að eiga samneyti við annarrar þjóðar mann eða koma til hans. En Guð hefur sýnt mér, að ég á engan að kalla vanheilagan eða óhreinan.

²⁹Wherefore also, having been sent for, I came without saying anything against it. I inquire therefore for what reason ye have sent for me.

²⁹Fyrir því kom ég mótmælalaust, er eftir mér var sent. Nú spyr ég, hvers vegna þér senduð eftir mér.``

³⁰And Cornelius said, Four days ago I had been [fasting] unto this hour, and the ninth [I was] praying in my house, and lo, a man stood before me in bright clothing,

³⁰Kornelíus mælti: ,,Í þetta mund fyrir fjórum dögum var ég að biðjast fyrir að nóni í húsi mínu. Þá stóð maður frammi fyrir mér í skínandi klæðum

³¹and said, Cornelius, thy prayer has been heard, and thy alms have come in remembrance before God.

³¹og mælti: ,Kornelíus, bæn þín er heyrð, og Guð hefur minnst ölmusugjörða þinna.

³²Send therefore to Joppa and fetch Simon, who is surnamed Peter; he lodges in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea [who when he is come will speak to thee].

³²Nú skalt þú senda til Joppe eftir Símoni, er kallast Pétur. Hann gistir í húsi Símonar sútara við sjóinn.`

³³Immediately therefore I sent to thee, and *thou* hast well done in coming. Now therefore *we* are all present before God to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

³³Því sendi ég jafnskjótt til þín, og vel gjörðir þú að koma. Nú erum vér hér allir fyrir augsýn Guðs til að heyra allt, sem Drottinn hefur boðið þér.``

³⁴And Peter opening his mouth said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons,

³⁴Þá tók Pétur til máls og sagði: ,,Sannlega skil ég nú, að Guð fer ekki í manngreinarálit.

³⁵but in every nation he that fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him.

³⁵Hann tekur opnum örmum hverjum þeim, sem óttast hann og ástundar réttlæti, hverrar þjóðar sem er.

³⁶The word which he sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ, (*he* is Lord of all things,)

³⁶Orðið, sem hann sendi börnum Ísraels, þá er hann flutti fagnaðarboðin um frið fyrir Jesú Krist, sem er Drottinn allra, þekkið þér.

³⁷*ye* know; the testimony which has spread through the whole of Judaea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached --

³⁷Þér vitið, hvað gjörst hefur um alla Júdeu, en hófst í Galíleu eftir skírnina, sem Jóhannes prédikaði.

³⁸Jesus who [was] of Nazareth: how God anointed him with [the] Holy Spirit and with power; who went through [all quarters] doing good, and healing all that were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

³⁸Það er sagan um Jesú frá Nasaret, hvernig Guð smurði hann heilögum anda og krafti. Hann gekk um, gjörði gott og græddi alla, sem af djöflinum voru undirokaðir, því Guð var með honum.

³⁹*We* also [are] witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom they also slew, having hanged him on a cross.

³⁹Vér erum vottar alls þess, er hann gjörði, bæði í landi Gyðinga og í Jerúsalem. Og hann hengdu þeir upp á tré og tóku af lífi.

⁴⁰This [man] God raised up the third day and gave him to be openly seen,

⁴⁰En Guð uppvakti hann á þriðja degi og lét hann birtast,

⁴¹not of all the people, but of witnesses who were chosen before of God, *us* who have eaten and drunk with him after he arose from among [the] dead.

⁴¹ekki öllum lýðnum, heldur þeim vottum, sem Guð hafði áður kjörið, oss, sem átum og drukkum með honum, eftir að hann var risinn upp frá dauðum.

⁴²And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that *he* it is who was determinately appointed of God [to be] judge of living and dead.

⁴²Og hann bauð oss að prédika fyrir lýðnum og vitna, að hann er sá dómari lifenda og dauðra, sem Guð hefur fyrirhugað.

⁴³To him all the prophets bear witness that every one that believes on him will receive through his name remission of sins.

⁴³Honum bera allir spámennirnir vitni, að sérhver, sem á hann trúir, fái fyrir hans nafn fyrirgefningu syndanna.``

⁴⁴While Peter was yet speaking these words the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were hearing the word.

⁴⁴Meðan Pétur var enn að mæla þessi orð, kom heilagur andi yfir alla þá, er orðið heyrðu.

⁴⁵And the faithful of the circumcision were astonished, as many as came with Peter, that upon the nations also the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out:

⁴⁵Hinir trúuðu Gyðingar, sem komið höfðu með Pétri, urðu furðu lostnir, að heilögum anda, gjöf Guðs, skyldi einnig úthellt yfir heiðingjana,

⁴⁶for they heard them speaking with tongues and magnifying God. Then Peter answered,

⁴⁶því þeir heyrðu þá tala tungum og mikla Guð.

⁴⁷Can any one forbid water that these should not be baptised, who have received the Holy Spirit as we also [did]?

⁴⁷Þá mælti Pétur: ,,Hver getur varnað þess, að þeir verði skírðir í vatni? Þeir hafa fengið heilagan anda sem vér.``Og hann bauð, að þeir skyldu skírðir verða í nafni Jesú Krists. Síðan báðu þeir hann að standa við í nokkra daga.

⁴⁸And he commanded them to be baptised in the name of the Lord. Then they begged him to stay some days.

⁴⁸Og hann bauð, að þeir skyldu skírðir verða í nafni Jesú Krists. Síðan báðu þeir hann að standa við í nokkra daga.
