¹And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee, for he would not walk in Judaea, because the Jews sought to kill him.

¹Eftir þetta fór Jesús um Galíleu. Hann vildi ekki fara um Júdeu, sökum þess að Gyðingar sátu um líf hans.

²Now the tabernacles, the feast of the Jews, was near.

²Nú fór að hátíð Gyðinga, laufskálahátíðin.

³His brethren therefore said to him, Remove hence and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou doest;

³Þá sögðu bræður hans við hann: ,,Flyt þig héðan og farðu til Júdeu, til þess að lærisveinar þínir sjái líka verkin þín, sem þú gjörir.

⁴for no one does anything in secret and himself seeks to be [known] in public. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world:

⁴Því enginn starfar í leynum, ef hann vill verða alkunnur. Fyrst þú vinnur slík verk, þá opinbera sjálfan þig heiminum.``

⁵for neither did his brethren believe on him.

⁵Því jafnvel bræður hans trúðu ekki á hann.

⁶Jesus therefore says to them, My time is not yet come, but your time is always ready.

⁶Jesús sagði við þá: ,,Minn tími er ekki enn kominn, en yður hentar allur tími.

⁷The world cannot hate you, but me it hates, because I bear witness concerning it that its works are evil.

⁷Heimurinn getur ekki hatað yður. Mig hatar hann, af því ég vitna um hann, að verk hans eru vond.

⁸Ye, go ye up to this feast. I go not up to this feast, for *my* time is not yet fulfilled.

⁸Þér skuluð fara upp eftir á hátíðina. Ég fer ekki til þessarar hátíðar, því minn tími er ekki enn kominn.``

⁹Having said these things to them he abode in Galilee.

⁹Þetta sagði hann þeim og var kyrr í Galíleu.

¹⁰But when his brethren had gone up, then he himself also went up to the feast, not openly, but as in secret.

¹⁰Þegar bræður hans voru farnir upp eftir til hátíðarinnar, fór hann samt líka upp eftir, ekki svo menn vissu, heldur nánast á laun.

¹¹The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

¹¹Gyðingar voru að leita að honum á hátíðinni og spurðu, hvar hann væri.

¹²And there was much murmuring concerning him among the crowds. Some said, He is [a] good [man]; others said, No; but he deceives the crowd.

¹²Manna á meðal var margt um hann talað. Sumir sögðu: ,,Hann er góður,`` en aðrir sögðu: ,,Nei, hann leiðir fjöldann í villu.``

¹³However, no one spoke openly concerning him on account of [their] fear of the Jews.

¹³Þó talaði enginn opinskátt um hann af ótta við Gyðinga.

¹⁴But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.

¹⁴Er hátíðin var þegar hálfnuð, fór Jesús upp í helgidóminn og tók að kenna.

¹⁵The Jews therefore wondered, saying, How knows this [man] letters, having never learned?

¹⁵Gyðingar urðu forviða og sögðu: ,,Hvernig hefur þessi maður orðið lærður og hefur þó ekki fræðslu notið?``

¹⁶Jesus therefore answered them and said, My doctrine is not mine, but [that] of him that has sent me.

¹⁶Jesús svaraði þeim: ,,Kenning mín er ekki mín, heldur hans, er sendi mig.

¹⁷If any one desire to practise his will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is of God, or [that] I speak from myself.

¹⁷Sá sem vill gjöra vilja hans, mun komast að raun um, hvort kenningin er frá Guði eða ég tala af sjálfum mér.

¹⁸He that speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he that seeks the glory of him that has sent him, he is true, and unrighteousness is not in him.

¹⁸Sá sem talar af sjálfum sér, leitar eigin heiðurs, en sá sem leitar heiðurs þess, er sendi hann, er sannorður og í honum ekkert ranglæti.

¹⁹Has not Moses given you the law, and no one of you practises the law? Why do ye seek to kill me?

¹⁹Gaf Móse yður ekki lögmálið? Samt heldur enginn yðar lögmálið. Hví sitjið þér um líf mitt?``

²⁰The crowd answered [and said], Thou hast a demon: who seeks to kill thee?

²⁰Fólkið ansaði: ,,Þú ert haldinn illum anda. Hver situr um líf þitt?``

²¹Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one work, and ye all wonder.

²¹Jesús svaraði þeim: ,,Eitt verk gjörði ég, og þér undrist það allir.

²²Therefore Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and ye circumcise a man on sabbath.

²²Móse gaf yður umskurnina _ hún er að vísu ekki frá Móse, heldur feðrunum _ og þér umskerið mann jafnvel á hvíldardegi.

²³If a man receives circumcision on sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be violated, are ye angry with me because I have made a man entirely sound on sabbath?

²³Fyrst maður er umskorinn á hvíldardegi, til þess að lögmál Móse verði ekki brotið, hví reiðist þér mér, að ég gjörði manninn allan heilan á hvíldardegi?

²⁴Judge not according to sight, but judge righteous judgment.

²⁴Dæmið ekki eftir útliti, dæmið réttlátan dóm.``

²⁵Some therefore of those of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?

²⁵Þá sögðu nokkrir Jerúsalembúar: ,,Er þetta ekki sá, sem þeir sitja um að lífláta?

²⁶and behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers then indeed recognised that this is the Christ?

²⁶Og nú er hann að tala á almannafæri, og þeir segja ekkert við hann. Skyldu nú höfðingjarnir hafa komist að raun um, að hann sé Kristur?

²⁷But [as to] this [man] we know whence he is. Now [as to] the Christ, when he comes, no one knows whence he is.

²⁷Nei, vér vitum, hvaðan þessi maður er. Þegar Kristur kemur, veit enginn, hvaðan hann er.``

²⁸Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me and ye know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye do not know.

²⁸Jesús var að kenna í helgidóminum, og nú kallaði hann: ,,Bæði þekkið þér mig og vitið hvaðan ég er. Þó er ég ekki kominn af sjálfum mér. En sá er sannur, sem sendi mig, og hann þekkið þér ekki.

²⁹I know him, because I am from him, and *he* has sent me.

²⁹Ég þekki hann, því ég er frá honum og hann sendi mig.``

³⁰They sought therefore to take him; and no one laid his hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come.

³⁰Nú ætluðu þeir að grípa hann, en enginn lagði hendur á hann, því stund hans var enn ekki komin.

³¹But many of the crowd believed on him, and said, Will the Christ, when he comes, do more signs than those which this [man] has done?

³¹En af alþýðu manna tóku margir að trúa á hann og sögðu: ,,Mun Kristur gjöra fleiri tákn, þegar hann kemur, en þessi maður hefur gjört?``

³²The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they might take him.

³²Farísear heyrðu, að fólk var að skrafa þetta um hann, og æðstu prestar og farísear sendu þjóna að taka hann höndum.

³³Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while I am with you, and I go to him that has sent me.

³³Þá sagði Jesús: ,,Enn verð ég hjá yður skamma stund, og þá fer ég aftur til þess, sem sendi mig.

³⁴Ye shall seek me and shall not find [me], and where I am ye cannot come.

³⁴Þér munuð leita mín og eigi finna. Þér getið ekki komist þangað sem ég er.``

³⁵The Jews therefore said to one another, Where is he about to go that we shall not find him? Is he about to go to the dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

³⁵Þá sögðu Gyðingar sín á milli: ,,Hvert skyldi hann ætla að fara, svo að vér finnum hann ekki? Hann ætlar þó ekki að fara til Gyðinga, sem dreifðir eru meðal Grikkja og kenna Grikkjum?

³⁶What word is this which he said, Ye shall seek me and shall not find [me]; and where I am ye cannot come?

³⁶Hvað var hann að segja: ,Þér munuð leita mín og eigi finna, og þér getið ekki komist þangað sem ég er`?``

³⁷In the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried saying, If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink.

³⁷Síðasta daginn, hátíðardaginn mikla, stóð Jesús þar og kallaði: ,,Ef nokkurn þyrstir, þá komi hann til mín og drekki.

³⁸He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

³⁸Sá sem trúir á mig, _ frá hjarta hans munu renna lækir lifandi vatns, eins og ritningin segir.``

³⁹But this he said concerning the Spirit, which they that believed on him were about to receive; for [the] Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

³⁹Þarna átti hann við andann, er þeir skyldu hljóta, sem á hann trúa. Því enn var andinn ekki gefinn, þar eð Jesús var ekki enn dýrlegur orðinn.

⁴⁰[Some] out of the crowd therefore, having heard this word, said, This is truly the prophet.

⁴⁰Þá sögðu nokkrir úr mannfjöldanum, sem hlýddu á þessi orð: ,,Þessi er sannarlega spámaðurinn.``

⁴¹Others said, This is the Christ. Others said, Does then the Christ come out of Galilee?

⁴¹Aðrir mæltu: ,,Hann er Kristur.`` En sumir sögðu: ,,Mundi Kristur þá koma frá Galíleu?

⁴²Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes of the seed of David, and from the village of Bethlehem, where David was?

⁴²Hefur ekki ritningin sagt, að Kristur komi af kyni Davíðs og frá Betlehem, þorpinu þar sem Davíð var?``

⁴³There was a division therefore in the crowd on account of him.

⁴³Þannig greindi menn á um hann.

⁴⁴But some of them desired to take him, but no one laid hands upon him.

⁴⁴Nokkrir þeirra vildu grípa hann, en þó lagði enginn hendur á hann.

⁴⁵The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, Why have ye not brought him?

⁴⁵Nú komu þjónarnir til æðstu prestanna og faríseanna, sem sögðu við þá: ,,Hvers vegna komuð þér ekki með hann?``

⁴⁶The officers answered, Never man spoke thus, as this man [speaks].

⁴⁶Þjónarnir svöruðu: ,,Aldrei hefur nokkur maður talað þannig.``

⁴⁷The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also deceived?

⁴⁷Þá sögðu farísearnir: ,,Létuð þér þá einnig leiðast afvega?

⁴⁸Has any one of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?

⁴⁸Ætli nokkur af höfðingjunum hafi farið að trúa á hann, eða þá af faríseum?

⁴⁹But this crowd, which does not know the law, are accursed.

⁴⁹Þessi almúgi, sem veit ekkert í lögmálinu, hann er bölvaður!``

⁵⁰Nicodemus says to them (being one of themselves),

⁵⁰Nikódemus, sem kom til hans fyrrum og var einn af þeim, segir við þá:

⁵¹Does our law judge a man before it have first heard from himself, and know what he does?

⁵¹,,Mundi lögmál vort dæma mann, nema hann sé yfirheyrður áður og að því komist, hvað hann hefur aðhafst?``

⁵²They answered and said to him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search and look, that no prophet arises out of Galilee.

⁵²Þeir svöruðu honum: ,,Ert þú nú líka frá Galíleu? Gáðu að og sjáðu, að enginn spámaður kemur úr Galíleu.``[Nú fór hver heim til sín.

⁵³And every one went to his home.
