¹And Samuel said to Saul, Jehovah sent *me* to anoint thee king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken to the voice of the words of Jehovah.

¹さて、サムエルはサウルに言った、「主は、わたしをつかわし、あなたに油をそそいで、その民イスラエルの王とされました。それゆえ、今、主の言葉を聞きなさい。

²Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: I have considered what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

²万軍の主は、こう仰せられる、『わたしは、アマレクがイスラエルにした事、すなわちイスラエルがエジプトから上ってきた時、その途中で敵対したことについて彼らを罰するであろう。

³Now go and smite Amalek, and destroy utterly all that they have, and spare them not, but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

³今、行ってアマレクを撃ち、そのすべての持ち物を滅ぼしつくせ。彼らをゆるすな。男も女も、幼な子も乳飲み子も、牛も羊も、らくだも、ろばも皆、殺せ』」。

⁴And Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

⁴サウルは民を呼び集め、テライムで人数を調べたところ、歩兵は二十万、ユダの人は一万であった。

⁵And Saul came to the city of the Amalekites, and set an ambush in the valley.

⁵そしてサウルはアマレクの町へ行って、谷に兵を伏せた。

⁶And Saul said to the Kenites, Go, depart, and go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt. And the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

⁶サウルはケニびとに言った、「さあ、あなたがたはアマレクびとを離れて、下っていってください。彼らと一緒にあなたがたを滅ぼすようなことがあってはならない。あなたがたは、イスラエルの人々がエジプトから上ってきた時、親切にしてくれたのですから」。そこでケニびとはアマレクびとを離れて行った。

⁷And Saul smote Amalek from Havilah as thou comest to Shur, which is opposite to Egypt.

⁷サウルはアマレクびとを撃って、ハビラからエジプトの東にあるシュルにまで及んだ。

⁸And he took Agag the king of Amalek alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

⁸そしてアマレクびとの王アガグをいけどり、つるぎをもってその民をことごとく滅ぼした。

⁹And Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep and oxen, and beasts of the second bearing, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not devote them to destruction; but everything that was mean and weak, that they destroyed utterly.

⁹しかしサウルと民はアガグをゆるし、また羊と牛の最も良いもの、肥えたものならびに小羊と、すべての良いものを残し、それらを滅ぼし尽すことを好まず、ただ値うちのない、つまらない物を滅ぼし尽した。

¹⁰And the word of Jehovah came to Samuel, saying,

¹⁰その時、主の言葉がサムエルに臨んだ、

¹¹It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned away from following me, and hath not fulfilled my words. And Samuel was much grieved; and he cried to Jehovah all night.

¹¹「わたしはサウルを王としたことを悔いる。彼がそむいて、わたしに従わず、わたしの言葉を行わなかったからである」。サムエルは怒って、夜通し、主に呼ばわった。

¹²And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning. And it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set him up a monument, and has turned about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.

¹²そして朝サウルに会うため、早く起きたが、サムエルに告げる人があった、「サウルはカルメルにきて、自分のために戦勝記念碑を建て、身をかえして進み、ギルガルへ下って行きました」。

¹³And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, Blessed art thou of Jehovah: I have fulfilled the word of Jehovah.

¹³サムエルがサウルのもとへ来ると、サウルは彼に言った、「どうぞ、主があなたを祝福されますように。わたしは主の言葉を実行しました」。

¹⁴And Samuel said, What [means] then this bleating of sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of oxen which I hear?

¹⁴サムエルは言った、「それならば、わたしの耳にはいる、この羊の声と、わたしの聞く牛の声は、いったい、なんですか」。

¹⁵And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites, because the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice to Jehovah thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

¹⁵サウルは言った、「人々がアマレクびとの所から引いてきたのです。民は、あなたの神、主にささげるために、羊と牛の最も良いものを残したのです。そのほかは、われわれが滅ぼし尽しました」。

¹⁶And Samuel said to Saul, Stay, that I may tell thee what Jehovah has said to me this night. And he said to him, Say on.

¹⁶サムエルはサウルに言った、「おやめなさい。昨夜、主がわたしに言われたことを、あなたに告げましょう」。サウルは彼に言った、「言ってください」。

¹⁷And Samuel said, Was it not when thou wast little in thine eyes that thou [becamest] the head of the tribes of Israel, and Jehovah anointed thee king over Israel?

¹⁷サムエルは言った、「たとい、自分では小さいと思っても、あなたはイスラエルの諸部族の長ではありませんか。主はあなたに油を注いでイスラエルの王とされた。

¹⁸And Jehovah sent thee on a way and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

¹⁸そして主はあなたに使命を授け、つかわして言われた、『行って、罪びとなるアマレクびとを滅ぼし尽せ。彼らを皆殺しにするまで戦え』。

¹⁹Why then didst thou not hearken to the voice of Jehovah, but didst fall upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of Jehovah?

¹⁹それであるのに、どうしてあなたは主の声に聞き従わないで、ぶんどり物にとびかかり、主の目の前に悪をおこなったのですか」。

²⁰And Saul said to Samuel, I have indeed hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and have gone the way which Jehovah sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

²⁰サウルはサムエルに言った、「わたしは主の声に聞き従い、主がつかわされた使命を帯びて行き、アマレクの王アガグを連れてきて、アマレクびとを滅ぼし尽しました。

²¹But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the choicest of the devoted things, to sacrifice to Jehovah thy God in Gilgal.

²¹しかし民は滅ぼし尽すべきもののうち最も良いものを、ギルガルで、あなたの神、主にささげるため、ぶんどり物のうちから羊と牛を取りました」。

²²And Samuel said, Has Jehovah delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, As in hearkening to the voice of Jehovah? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, Attention than the fat of rams.

²²サムエルは言った、「主はそのみ言葉に聞き従う事を喜ばれるように、燔祭や犠牲を喜ばれるであろうか。見よ、従うことは犠牲にまさり、聞くことは雄羊の脂肪にまさる。

²³For rebellion is [as] the sin of divination, And selfwill is [as] iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, He hath also rejected thee from being king.

²³そむくことは占いの罪に等しく、強情は偶像礼拝の罪に等しいからである。あなたが主のことばを捨てたので、主もまたあなたを捨てて、王の位から退けられた」。

²⁴And Saul said to Samuel, I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of Jehovah, and thy words; for I feared the people, and hearkened to their voice.

²⁴サウルはサムエルに言った、「わたしは主の命令とあなたの言葉にそむいて罪を犯しました。民を恐れて、その声に聞き従ったからです。

²⁵And now, I pray thee, forgive my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah.

²⁵どうぞ、今わたしの罪をゆるし、わたしと一緒に帰って、主を拝ませてください」。

²⁶And Samuel said to Saul, I will not turn again with thee; for thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, and Jehovah has rejected thee from being king over Israel.

²⁶サムエルはサウルに言った、「あなたと一緒に帰りません。あなたが主の言葉を捨てたので、主もあなたを捨てて、イスラエルの王位から退けられたからです」。

²⁷And as Samuel turned to go away, [Saul] laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

²⁷こうしてサムエルが去ろうとして身をかえした時、サウルがサムエルの上着のすそを捕えたので、それは裂けた。

²⁸Then Samuel said to him, Jehovah has rent the kingdom of Israel from thee to-day, and has given it to thy neighbour, who is better than thou.

²⁸サムエルは彼に言った、「主はきょう、あなたからイスラエルの王国を裂き、もっと良いあなたの隣人に与えられた。

²⁹And also the Hope of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.

²⁹またイスラエルの栄光は偽ることもなく、悔いることもない。彼は人ではないから悔いることはない」。

³⁰And he said, I have sinned; honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah thy God.

³⁰サウルは言った、「わたしは罪を犯しましたが、どうぞ、民の長老たち、およびイスラエルの前で、わたしを尊び、わたしと一緒に帰って、あなたの神、主を拝ませてください」。

³¹So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped Jehovah.

³¹そこでサムエルはサウルのあとについて帰った。そしてサウルは主を拝んだ。

³²And Samuel said, Bring ye near to me Agag the king of Amalek. And Agag came to him gaily. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

³²時にサムエルは言った、「わたしの所にアマレクびとの王アガグを引いてきなさい」。アガグはうれしそうにサムエルの所にきた。アガグは「死の苦しみはきっと過ぎ去ったのだ」と思った。

³³And Samuel said, As thy sword has made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless above women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal.

³³サムエルは言った、「あなたのつるぎは多くの女に子供を失わせた。そのようにあなたの母も女のうちで最も無惨に子供を失う者となるであろう」。サムエルはギルガルで主の前に、アガグを寸断した。

³⁴And Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

³⁴そしてサムエルはラマに行き、サウルは故郷のギベアに上って、その家に帰った。サムエルは死ぬ日まで、二度とサウルを見なかった。しかしサムエルはサウルのために悲しんだ。また主はサウルをイスラエルの王としたことを悔いられた。

³⁵And Samuel saw Saul no more until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned over Saul; and Jehovah repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.

³⁵サムエルは死ぬ日まで、二度とサウルを見なかった。しかしサムエルはサウルのために悲しんだ。また主はサウルをイスラエルの王としたことを悔いられた。
