¹And Jehovah said to Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.

¹さて主はサムエルに言われた、「わたしがすでにサウルを捨てて、イスラエルの王位から退けたのに、あなたはいつまで彼のために悲しむのか。角に油を満たし、それをもって行きなさい。あなたをベツレヘムびとエッサイのもとにつかわします。わたしはその子たちのうちにひとりの王を捜し得たからである」。

²And Samuel said, How shall I go? if Saul hear [it], he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah.

²サムエルは言った、「どうしてわたしは行くことができましょう。サウルがそれを聞けば、わたしを殺すでしょう」。主は言われた、「一頭の子牛を引いていって、『主に犠牲をささげるためにきました』と言いなさい。

³And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will tell thee what thou shalt do; and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

³そしてエッサイを犠牲の場所に呼びなさい。その時わたしはあなたのすることを示します。わたしがあなたに告げる人に油を注がなければならない」。

⁴And Samuel did what Jehovah said, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him, and said, Dost thou come peaceably?

⁴サムエルは主が命じられたようにして、ベツレヘムへ行った。町の長老たちは、恐れながら出て、彼を迎え、「穏やかな事のためにこられたのですか」と言った。

⁵And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah. Hallow yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he hallowed Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

⁵サムエルは言った、「穏やかな事のためです。わたしは主に犠牲をささげるためにきました。身をきよめて、犠牲の場所にわたしと共にきてください」。そしてサムエルはエッサイとその子たちをきよめて犠牲の場に招いた。

⁶And it came to pass when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah's anointed is before him.

⁶彼らがきた時、サムエルはエリアブを見て、「自分の前にいるこの人こそ、主が油をそそがれる人だ」と思った。

⁷But Jehovah said to Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him; for it is not as man seeth; for man looketh upon the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh upon the heart.

⁷しかし主はサムエルに言われた、「顔かたちや身のたけを見てはならない。わたしはすでにその人を捨てた。わたしが見るところは人とは異なる。人は外の顔かたちを見、主は心を見る」。

⁸Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither has Jehovah chosen this one.

⁸そこでエッサイはアビナダブを呼んでサムエルの前を通らせた。サムエルは言った、「主が選ばれたのはこの人でもない」。

⁹Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, Neither has Jehovah chosen this one.

⁹エッサイはシャンマを通らせたが、サムエルは言った、「主が選ばれたのはこの人でもない」。

¹⁰And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, Jehovah has not chosen these.

¹⁰エッサイは七人の子にサムエルの前を通らせたが、サムエルはエッサイに言った、「主が選ばれたのはこの人たちではない」。

¹¹And Samuel said to Jesse, Are these all the young men? And he said, There is yet the youngest remaining, and behold, he is feeding the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit at table till he come hither.

¹¹サムエルはエッサイに言った、「あなたのむすこたちは皆ここにいますか」。彼は言った、「まだ末の子が残っていますが羊を飼っています」。サムエルはエッサイに言った、「人をやって彼を連れてきなさい。彼がここに来るまで、われわれは食卓につきません」。

¹²And he sent and brought him in. And he was ruddy, and besides of a lovely countenance and beautiful appearance. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.

¹²そこで人をやって彼をつれてきた。彼は血色のよい、目のきれいな、姿の美しい人であった。主は言われた、「立ってこれに油をそそげ。これがその人である」。

¹³And Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren. And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

¹³サムエルは油の角をとって、その兄弟たちの中で、彼に油をそそいだ。この日からのち、主の霊は、はげしくダビデの上に臨んだ。そしてサムエルは立ってラマへ行った。

¹⁴And the Spirit of Jehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him.

¹⁴さて主の霊はサウルを離れ、主から来る悪霊が彼を悩ました。

¹⁵And Saul's servants said to him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles thee.

¹⁵サウルの家来たちは彼に言った、「ごらんなさい。神から来る悪霊があなたを悩ましているのです。

¹⁶Let our lord now speak; thy servants are before thee: they shall seek out a man, a skilful player on a harp; and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

¹⁶どうぞ、われわれの主君が、あなたの前に仕えている家来たちに命じて、じょうずに琴をひく者ひとりを捜させてください。神から来る悪霊があなたに臨む時、彼が手で琴をひくならば、あなたは良くなられるでしょう」。

¹⁷And Saul said to his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

¹⁷そこでサウルは家来たちに言った、「じょうずに琴をひく者を捜して、わたしのもとに連れてきなさい」。

¹⁸And one of the young men answered and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skilled in playing, and he is a valiant man and a man of war, and skilled in speech, and of good presence, and Jehovah is with him.

¹⁸その時、ひとりの若者がこたえた、「わたしはベツレヘムびとエッサイの子を見ましたが、琴がじょうずで、勇気もあり、いくさびとで、弁舌にひいで、姿の美しい人です。また主が彼と共におられます」。

¹⁹Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep.

¹⁹そこでサウルはエッサイのもとに使者をつかわして言った、「羊を飼っているあなたの子ダビデをわたしのもとによこしなさい」。

²⁰And Jesse took an ass with bread, and a flask of wine, and a kid, and sent [them] by David his son to Saul.

²⁰エッサイは、ろばにパンを負わせ、皮袋にいれたぶどう酒一袋と、やぎの子とを取って、その子ダビデの手によってサウルに送った。

²¹And David came to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him greatly; and he became his armour-bearer.

²¹ダビデはサウルのもとにきて、彼に仕えた。サウルはひじょうにこれを愛して、その武器を執る者とした。

²²And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he has found favour in my sight.

²²またサウルは人をつかわしてエッサイに言った、「ダビデをわたしに仕えさせてください。彼はわたしの心にかないました」。神から出る悪霊がサウルに臨む時、ダビデは琴をとり、手でそれをひくと、サウルは気が静まり、良くなって、悪霊は彼を離れた。

²³And it came to pass, when the [evil] spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand; and Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

²³神から出る悪霊がサウルに臨む時、ダビデは琴をとり、手でそれをひくと、サウルは気が静まり、良くなって、悪霊は彼を離れた。
