1And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people collected together to Aaron, and said to him, Up, make us a god, who will go before us; for this Moses, the man that has brought us up out of the land of Egypt, -- we do not know what is become of him!
1民はモーセが山を下ることのおそいのを見て、アロンのもとに集まって彼に言った、「さあ、わたしたちに先立って行く神を、わたしたちのために造ってください。わたしたちをエジプトの国から導きのぼった人、あのモーセはどうなったのかわからないからです」。
2And Aaron said to them, Break off the golden rings that are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring [them] to me.
2アロンは彼らに言った、「あなたがたの妻、むすこ、娘らの金の耳輪をはずしてわたしに持ってきなさい」。
3Then all the people broke off the golden rings that were in their ears, and brought [them] to Aaron.
3そこで民は皆その金の耳輪をはずしてアロンのもとに持ってきた。
4And he took [them] out of their hand, and fashioned it with a chisel and made of it a molten calf: and they said, This is thy god, Israel, who has brought thee up out of the land of Egypt!
4アロンがこれを彼らの手から受け取り、工具で型を造り、鋳て子牛としたので、彼らは言った、「イスラエルよ、これはあなたをエジプトの国から導きのぼったあなたの神である」。
5And Aaron saw [it], and built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation, and said, To-morrow is a feast to Jehovah!

6And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered up burnt-offerings, and brought peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to sport.

7Then Jehovah said to Moses, Away, go down! for thy people, which thou hast brought out of the land of Egypt, is acting corruptly.
7主はモーセに言われた、「急いで下りなさい。あなたがエジプトの国から導きのぼったあなたの民は悪いことをした。
8They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them: they have made themselves a molten calf, and have bowed down to it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, This is thy god, Israel, who has brought thee up out of the land of Egypt!
8彼らは早くもわたしが命じた道を離れ、自分のために鋳物の子牛を造り、これを拝み、これに犠牲をささげて、『イスラエルよ、これはあなたをエジプトの国から導きのぼったあなたの神である』と言っている」。
9And Jehovah said to Moses, I see this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people.
9主はまたモーセに言われた、「わたしはこの民を見た。これはかたくなな民である。
10And now let me alone, that my anger may burn against them, and I may consume them; and I will make of thee a great nation.
10それで、わたしをとめるな。わたしの怒りは彼らにむかって燃え、彼らを滅ぼしつくすであろう。しかし、わたしはあなたを大いなる国民とするであろう」。
11And Moses besought Jehovah his God, and said, Why, Jehovah, doth thy wrath burn against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a strong hand?
11モーセはその神、主をなだめて言った、「主よ、大いなる力と強き手をもって、エジプトの国から導き出されたあなたの民にむかって、なぜあなたの怒りが燃えるのでしょうか。
12Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, For misfortune he has brought them out, to slay them on the mountains, and to annihilate them from the face of the earth? Turn from the heat of thine anger, and repent of this evil against thy people!
12どうしてエジプトびとに『彼は悪意をもって彼らを導き出し、彼らを山地で殺し、地の面から断ち滅ぼすのだ』と言わせてよいでしょうか。どうかあなたの激しい怒りをやめ、あなたの民に下そうとされるこの災を思い直し、
13Remember Abraham, Isaac and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou sworest by thyself, and saidst to them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give to your seed, and they shall possess [it] for ever!
13あなたのしもべアブラハム、イサク、イスラエルに、あなたが御自身をさして誓い、『わたしは天の星のように、あなたがたの子孫を増し、わたしが約束したこの地を皆あなたがたの子孫に与えて、長くこれを所有させるであろう』と彼らに仰せられたことを覚えてください」。
14And Jehovah repented of the evil that he had said he would do to his people.
14それで、主はその民に下すと言われた災について思い直された。
15And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, [with] the two tables of the testimony in his hand -- tables written on both their sides: on this side and on that were they written.
15モーセは身を転じて山を下った。彼の手には、かの二枚のあかしの板があった。板はその両面に文字があった。すなわち、この面にも、かの面にも文字があった。
16And the tables [were] God's work, and the writing was God's writing, engraven on the tables.
16その板は神の作、その文字は神の文字であって、板に彫ったものである。
17And Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, and said to Moses, There is a shout of war in the camp.
17ヨシュアは民の呼ばわる声を聞いて、モーセに言った、「宿営の中に戦いの声がします」。
18And he said, It is not the sound of a shout of victory, neither is it the sound of a shout of defeat: it is the noise of alternate singing I hear.
18しかし、モーセは言った、「勝どきの声でなく、敗北の叫び声でもない。わたしの聞くのは歌の声である」。
19And it came to pass, when he came near the camp, and saw the calf and the dancing, that Moses' anger burned, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and shattered them beneath the mountain.
19モーセが宿営に近づくと、子牛と踊りとを見たので、彼は怒りに燃え、手からかの板を投げうち、これを山のふもとで砕いた。
20And he took the calf that they had made, and burned [it] with fire, and ground it to powder, and strewed [it] on the water, and made the children of Israel drink [it].
20また彼らが造った子牛を取って火に焼き、こなごなに砕き、これを水の上にまいて、イスラエルの人々に飲ませた。
21And Moses said to Aaron, What has this people done to thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin on them?
21モーセはアロンに言った、「この民があなたに何をしたので、あなたは彼らに大いなる罪を犯させたのですか」。
22And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord burn! thou knowest the people, that they are [set] on mischief.
22アロンは言った、「わが主よ、激しく怒らないでください。この民の悪いのは、あなたがごぞんじです。
23And they said to me, Make us a god, who will go before us; for this Moses, the man that has brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what is become of him!
23彼らはわたしに言いました、『わたしたちに先立って行く神を、わたしたちのために造ってください。わたしたちをエジプトの国から導きのぼった人、あのモーセは、どうなったのかわからないからです』。
24And I said to them, Who has gold? They broke [it] off, and gave [it] me, and I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
24そこでわたしは『だれでも、金を持っている者は、それを取りはずしなさい』と彼らに言いました。彼らがそれをわたしに渡したので、わたしがこれを火に投げ入れると、この子牛が出てきたのです」。
25And Moses saw the people how they were stripped; for Aaron had stripped them to [their] shame before their adversaries.
25モーセは民がほしいままにふるまったのを見た。アロンは彼らがほしいままにふるまうに任せ、敵の中に物笑いとなったからである。
26And Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, He that is for Jehovah, [let him come] to me. And all the sons of Levi gathered to him.
26モーセは宿営の門に立って言った、「すべて主につく者はわたしのもとにきなさい」。レビの子たちはみな彼のもとに集まった。
27And he said to them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Put every man his sword upon his hip; go and return from gate to gate through the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbour.
27そこでモーセは彼らに言った、「イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる、『あなたがたは、おのおの腰につるぎを帯び、宿営の中を門から門へ行き巡って、おのおのその兄弟、その友、その隣人を殺せ』」。
28And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses; and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
28レビの子たちはモーセの言葉どおりにしたので、その日、民のうち、おおよそ三千人が倒れた。
29And Moses said, Consecrate yourselves to-day to Jehovah, yea, every man with his son, and with his brother, and bring on yourselves a blessing to-day.
29そこで、モーセは言った、「あなたがたは、おのおのその子、その兄弟に逆らって、きょう、主に身をささげた。それで主は、きょう、あなたがたに祝福を与えられるであろう」。
30And it came to pass the next day, that Moses said to the people, Ye have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to Jehovah: perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin.
30あくる日、モーセは民に言った、「あなたがたは大いなる罪を犯した。それで今、わたしは主のもとに上って行く。あなたがたの罪を償うことが、できるかも知れない」。
31And Moses returned to Jehovah, and said, Alas, this people has sinned a great sin, and they have made themselves a god of gold!
31モーセは主のもとに帰って、そして言った、「ああ、この民は大いなる罪を犯し、自分のために金の神を造りました。
32And now, if thou wilt forgive their sin ... but if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book that thou hast written.
32今もしあなたが、彼らの罪をゆるされますならば――。しかし、もしかなわなければ、どうぞあなたが書きしるされたふみから、わたしの名を消し去ってください」。
33And Jehovah said to Moses, Whoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
33主はモーセに言われた、「すべてわたしに罪を犯した者は、これをわたしのふみから消し去るであろう。
34And now go, lead the people whither I have told thee: behold, my Angel shall go before thee; but in the day of my visiting I will visit their sin upon them.
34しかし、今あなたは行って、わたしがあなたに告げたところに民を導きなさい。見よ、わたしの使はあなたに先立って行くであろう。ただし刑罰の日に、わたしは彼らの罪を罰するであろう」。そして主は民を撃たれた。彼らが子牛を造ったからである。それはアロンが造ったのである。
35And Jehovah smote the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron had made.
