¹And Sarai Abram's wife did not bear him [children]. And she had an Egyptian maidservant; and her name was Hagar.

¹アブラムの妻サライは子を産まなかった。彼女にひとりのつかえめがあった。エジプトの女で名をハガルといった。

²And Sarai said to Abram, Behold now, Jehovah has shut me up, that I do not bear. Go in, I pray thee, to my maidservant: it may be that I shall be built up by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

²サライはアブラムに言った、「主はわたしに子をお授けになりません。どうぞ、わたしのつかえめの所におはいりください。彼女によってわたしは子をもつことになるでしょう」。アブラムはサライの言葉を聞きいれた。

³And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar, the Egyptian, her maidservant, at the end of ten years that Abram had dwelt in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram, as his wife.

³アブラムの妻サライはそのつかえめエジプトの女ハガルをとって、夫アブラムに妻として与えた。これはアブラムがカナンの地に十年住んだ後であった。

⁴And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was lightly esteemed in her eyes.

⁴彼はハガルの所にはいり、ハガルは子をはらんだ。彼女は自分のはらんだのを見て、女主人を見下げるようになった。

⁵And Sarai said to Abram, My wrong be on thee! I have given my maidservant into thy bosom; and now she sees that she has conceived, I am lightly esteemed in her eyes. Jehovah judge between me and thee!

⁵そこでサライはアブラムに言った、「わたしが受けた害はあなたの責任です。わたしのつかえめをあなたのふところに与えたのに、彼女は自分のはらんだのを見て、わたしを見下さげます。どうか、主があなたとわたしの間をおさばきになるように」。

⁶And Abram said to Sarai, Behold, thy maidservant is in thy hand: do to her what is good in thine eyes. And Sarai oppressed her; and she fled from her face.

⁶アブラムはサライに言った、「あなたのつかえめはあなたの手のうちにある。あなたの好きなように彼女にしなさい」。そしてサライが彼女を苦しめたので、彼女はサライの顔を避けて逃げた。

⁷And the Angel of Jehovah found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.

⁷主の使は荒野にある泉のほとり、すなわちシュルの道にある泉のほとりで、彼女に会い、

⁸And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maidservant, whence comest thou? and whither art thou going? And she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.

⁸そして言った、「サライのつかえめハガルよ、あなたはどこからきたのですか、またどこへ行くのですか」。彼女は言った、「わたしは女主人サライの顔を避けて逃げているのです」。

⁹And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

⁹主の使は彼女に言った、「あなたは女主人のもとに帰って、その手に身を任せなさい」。

¹⁰And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

¹⁰主の使はまた彼女に言った、「わたしは大いにあなたの子孫を増して、数えきれないほどに多くしましょう」。

¹¹And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael, because Jehovah hath hearkened to thy affliction.

¹¹主の使はまた彼女に言った、「あなたは、みごもっています。あなたは男の子を産むでしょう。名をイシマエルと名づけなさい。主があなたの苦しみを聞かれたのです。

¹²And he will be a wild-ass of a man, his hand against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell before the face of all his brethren.

¹²彼は野ろばのような人となり、その手はすべての人に逆らい、すべての人の手は彼に逆らい、彼はすべての兄弟に敵して住むでしょう」。

¹³And she called the name of Jehovah who spoke to her, Thou art the ùGod who reveals himself, for she said, Also here have I seen after he has revealed himself.

¹³そこで、ハガルは自分に語られた主の名を呼んで、「あなたはエル・ロイです」と言った。彼女が「ここでも、わたしを見ていられるかたのうしろを拝めたのか」と言ったことによる。

¹⁴Therefore the well was named Beer-lahai-roi: behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

¹⁴それでその井戸は「ベエル・ラハイ・ロイ」と呼ばれた。これはカデシとベレデの間にある。

¹⁵And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.

¹⁵ハガルはアブラムに男の子を産んだ。アブラムはハガルが産んだ子の名をイシマエルと名づけた。ハガルがイシマエルをアブラムに産んだ時、アブラムは八十六歳であった。

¹⁶And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
