¹Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear mine utterances, and hearken to all my words.

¹だから、ヨブよ、今わたしの言うことを聞け、わたしのすべての言葉に耳を傾けよ。

²Behold now, I have opened my mouth, my tongue speaketh in my palate,

²見よ、わたしは口を開き、口の中の舌は物言う。

³My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart, and my lips shall utter knowledge purely.

³わたしの言葉はわが心の正しきを語り、わたしのくちびるは真実をもってその知識を語る。

⁴The Spirit of ùGod hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

⁴神の霊はわたしを造り、全能者の息はわたしを生かす。

⁵If thou canst, answer me; array [thy words] before me: take thy stand.

⁵あなたがもしできるなら、わたしに答えよ、わたしの前に言葉を整えて、立て。

⁶Behold, before ùGod I am as thou; I also am formed out of the clay.

⁶見よ、神に対しては、わたしもあなたと同様であり、わたしもまた土から取って造られた者だ。

⁷Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, nor my burden be heavy upon thee.

⁷見よ、わたしの威厳はあなたを恐れさせない、わたしの勢いはあなたを圧しない。

⁸Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of [thy] words: --

⁸確かに、あなたはわたしの聞くところで言った、わたしはあなたの言葉の声を聞いた。

⁹I am clean without transgression; I am pure, and there is no iniquity in me;

⁹あなたは言う、『わたしはいさぎよく、とがはない。わたしは清く、不義はない。

¹⁰Lo, he findeth occasions of hostility against me, he counteth me for his enemy;

¹⁰見よ、彼はわたしを攻める口実を見つけ、わたしを自分の敵とみなし、

¹¹He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.

¹¹わたしの足をかせにはめ、わたしのすべての行いに目をとめられる』と。

¹²Behold, I will answer thee in this, thou art not right; for +God is greater than man.

¹²見よ、わたしはあなたに答える、あなたはこの事において正しくない。神は人よりも大いなる者だ。

¹³Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

¹³あなたが『彼はわたしの言葉に少しも答えられない』といって、彼に向かって言い争うのは、どういうわけであるか。

¹⁴For ùGod speaketh once, and twice, -- [and man] perceiveth it not --

¹⁴神は一つの方法によって語られ、また二つの方法によって語られるのだが、人はそれを悟らないのだ。

¹⁵In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;

¹⁵人々が熟睡するとき、または床にまどろむとき、夢あるいは夜の幻のうちで、

¹⁶Then he openeth men's ears, and sealeth their instruction,

¹⁶彼は人々の耳を開き、警告をもって彼らを恐れさせ、

¹⁷That he may withdraw man [from his] work, and hide pride from man.

¹⁷こうして人にその悪しきわざを離れさせ、高ぶりを人から除き、

¹⁸He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from passing away by the sword.

¹⁸その魂を守って、墓に至らせず、その命を守って、つるぎに滅びないようにされる。

¹⁹He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and with constant strife in his bones;

¹⁹人はまたその床の上で痛みによって懲らされ、その骨に戦いが絶えることなく、

²⁰And his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty food;

²⁰その命は、食物をいとい、その食欲は、おいしい食物をきらう。

²¹His flesh is consumed away from view, and his bones that were not seen stick out;

²¹その肉はやせ落ちて見えず、その骨は見えなかったものまでもあらわになり、

²²And his soul draweth near to the pit, and his life to the destroyers.

²²その魂は墓に近づき、その命は滅ぼす者に近づく。

²³If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his duty;

²³もしそこに彼のためにひとりの天使があり、千のうちのひとりであって、仲保となり、人にその正しい道を示すならば、

²⁴Then he will be gracious unto him, and say, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.

²⁴神は彼をあわれんで言われる、『彼を救って、墓に下ることを免れさせよ、わたしはすでにあがないしろを得た。

²⁵His flesh shall be fresher than in childhood; he shall return to the days of his youth.

²⁵彼の肉を幼な子の肉よりもみずみずしくならせ、彼を若い時の元気に帰らせよ』と。

²⁶He shall pray unto +God, and he will receive him with favour; and he shall see his face with shoutings, and he will render unto man his righteousness.

²⁶その時、彼が神に祈るならば、神は彼を顧み、喜びをもって、み前にいたらせ、その救を人に告げ知らせられる。

²⁷He will sing before men, and say, I have sinned, and perverted what was right, and it hath not been requited to me;

²⁷彼は人々の前に歌って言う、『わたしは罪を犯し、正しい事を曲げた。しかしわたしに報復がなかった。

²⁸He hath delivered my soul from going into the pit, and my life shall see the light.

²⁸彼はわたしの魂をあがなって、墓に下らせられなかった。わたしの命は光を見ることができる』と。

²⁹Lo, all these [things] worketh ùGod twice, thrice, with man,

²⁹見よ、神はこれらすべての事をふたたび、みたび人に行い、

³⁰To bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

³⁰その魂を墓から引き返し、彼に命の光を見させられる。

³¹Mark well, Job, hearken unto me; be silent, and I will speak.

³¹ヨブよ、耳を傾けてわたしに聞け、黙せよ、わたしは語ろう。

³²If thou hast anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify thee.

³²あなたがもし言うべきことがあるなら、わたしに答えよ、語れ、わたしはあなたを正しい者にしようと望むからだ。もし語ることがないなら、わたしに聞け、黙せよ、わたしはあなたに知恵を教えよう」。

³³If not, hearken thou unto me; be silent, and I will teach thee wisdom.

³³もし語ることがないなら、わたしに聞け、黙せよ、わたしはあなたに知恵を教えよう」。
