¹Be not thou envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them;

¹悪を行う人をうらやんではならない、また彼らと共におることを願ってはならない。

²for their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

²彼らはその心に強奪を計り、そのくちびるに人をそこなうことを語るからである。

³Through wisdom is a house built, and by understanding it is established;

³家は知恵によって建てられ、悟りによって堅くせられ、

⁴and by knowledge are the chambers filled with all precious and pleasant substance.

⁴また、へやは知識によってさまざまの尊く、麗しい宝で満たされる。

⁵A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

⁵知恵ある者は強い人よりも強く、知識ある人は力ある人よりも強い。

⁶For with good advice shalt thou make thy war; and in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

⁶良い指揮によって戦いをすることができ、勝利は多くの議する者がいるからである。

⁷Wisdom is too high for a fool: he will not open his mouth in the gate.

⁷知恵は高くて愚かな者の及ぶところではない、愚かな者は門で口を開くことができない。

⁸He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a master of intrigues.

⁸悪を行うことを計る者を人はいたずら者ととなえる。

⁹The purpose of folly is sin, and the scorner is an abomination to men.

⁹愚かな者の計るところは罪であり、あざける者は人に憎まれる。

¹⁰[If] thou losest courage in the day of trouble, thy strength is small.

¹⁰もしあなたが悩みの日に気をくじくならば、あなたの力は弱い。

¹¹Deliver them that are taken forth unto death, and withdraw not from them that stagger to slaughter.

¹¹死地にひかれゆく者を助け出せ、滅びによろめきゆく者を救え。

¹²If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not, will not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? And he that preserveth thy soul, he knoweth it; and he rendereth to man according to his work.

¹²あなたが、われわれはこれを知らなかったといっても、心をはかる者はそれを悟らないであろうか。あなたの魂を守る者はそれを知らないであろうか。彼はおのおのの行いにより、人に報いないであろうか。

¹³Eat honey, my son, for it is good; and a honeycomb is sweet to thy taste:

¹³わが子よ、蜜を食べよ、これは良いものである、また、蜂の巣のしたたりはあなたの口に甘い。

¹⁴so consider wisdom for thy soul; if thou hast found it, there shall be a result, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

¹⁴知恵もあなたの魂にはそのようであることを知れ。それを得るならば、かならず報いがあって、あなたの望みは、すたらない。

¹⁵Lay not wait, O wicked [man], against the dwelling of the righteous; lay not waste his resting-place.

¹⁵悪しき者がするように、正しい者の家をうかがってはならない、その住む所に乱暴をしてはならない。

¹⁶For the righteous falleth seven times, and riseth up again; but the wicked stumble into disaster.

¹⁶正しい者は七たび倒れても、また起きあがる、しかし、悪しき者は災によって滅びる。

¹⁷Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth;

¹⁷あなたのあだが倒れるとき楽しんではならない、彼のつまずくとき心に喜んではならない。

¹⁸lest Jehovah see it, and it be evil in his sight, and he turn away his anger from him.

¹⁸主はそれを見て悪いこととし、その怒りを彼から転じられる。

¹⁹Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, [and] be not envious of the wicked:

¹⁹悪を行う者のゆえに心を悩ましてはならない、よこしまな者をうらやんではならない。

²⁰for there shall be no future to the evil [man]; the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

²⁰悪しき者には後の良い報いはない、よこしまな者のともしびは消される。

²¹My son, fear Jehovah and the king: meddle not with them that are given to change.

²¹わが子よ、主と王とを恐れよ、そのいずれにも不従順であってはならない。

²²For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?

²²その災はたちまち起るからである。この二つの者からくる滅びをだれが知り得ようか。

²³These things also come from the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

²³これらもまた知恵ある者の箴言である。片寄ったさばきをするのは、よくない。

²⁴He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous, peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him;

²⁴悪しき者に向かって、「あなたは正しい」という者を、人々はのろい、諸民は憎む。

²⁵but to them that rebuke [him] shall be delight, and a good blessing cometh upon them.

²⁵悪しき者をせめる者は恵みを得る、また幸福が与えられる。

²⁶He kisseth the lips who giveth a right answer.

²⁶正しい答をする者は、くちびるに、口づけするのである。

²⁷Prepare thy work without, and put thy field in order, and afterwards build thy house.

²⁷外で、あなたの仕事を整え、畑で、すべての物をおのれのために備え、その後あなたの家を建てるがよい。

²⁸Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and wouldest thou deceive with thy lips?

²⁸ゆえなく隣り人に敵して、証言をしてはならない、くちびるをもって欺いてはならない。

²⁹Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me, I will render to the man according to his work.

²⁹「彼がわたしにしたように、わたしも彼にしよう、わたしは人がしたところにしたがって、その人に報いよう」と言ってはならない。

³⁰I went by the field of a sluggard, and by the vineyard of a man void of understanding;

³⁰わたしはなまけ者の畑のそばと、知恵のない人のぶどう畑のそばを通ってみたが、

³¹and lo, it was all grown over with thistles, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and its stone wall was broken down.

³¹いばらが一面に生え、あざみがその地面をおおい、その石がきはくずれていた。

³²Then I looked, I took it to heart; I saw, I received instruction:

³²わたしはこれをみて心をとどめ、これを見て教訓を得た。

³³-- A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest!

³³「しばらく眠り、しばらくまどろみ、手をこまぬいて、またしばらく休む」。それゆえ、貧しさは盗びとのように、あなたに来、乏しさは、つわもののように、あなたに来る。

³⁴So shall thy poverty come [as] a roving plunderer, and thy penury as an armed man.
