¹{To the chief Musician. Of the sons of Korah. A Psalm.} Hear this, all ye peoples; give ear, all inhabitants of the world:

¹もろもろの民よ、これを聞け、すべて世に住む者よ、耳を傾けよ。

²Both men of low and men of high degree, rich and poor alike.

²低きも高きも、富めるも貧しきも、共に耳を傾けよ。

³My mouth shall speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding:

³わが口は知恵を語り、わが心は知識を思う。

⁴I will incline mine ear to a parable, I will open my riddle upon the harp.

⁴わたしは耳をたとえに傾け、琴を鳴らして、わたしのなぞを解き明かそう。

⁵Wherefore should I fear in the days of adversity, [when] the iniquity of my supplanters encompasseth me? --

⁵わたしをしえたげる者の不義がわたしを取り囲む悩みの日に、どうして恐れなければならないのか。

⁶They depend upon their wealth, and boast themselves in the abundance of their riches. ...

⁶彼らはおのが富をたのみ、そのたからの多いのを誇る人々である。

⁷None can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him,

⁷まことに人はだれも自分をあがなうことはできない。そのいのちの価を神に払うことはできない。

⁸(For the redemption of their soul is costly, and must be given up for ever,)

⁸とこしえに生きながらえて、墓を見ないためにそのいのちをあがなうには、あまりに価高くて、それを満足に払うことができないからである。

⁹That he should still live perpetually, [and] not see corruption.

⁹まことに賢い人も死に、愚かな者も、獣のような者も、ひとしく滅んで、その富を他人に残すことは人の見るところである。

¹⁰For he seeth that wise men die; all alike, the fool and the brutish perish, and they leave their wealth to others.

¹⁰たとい彼らはその地を自分の名をもって呼んでも、墓こそ彼らのとこしえのすまい、世々彼らのすみかである。

¹¹Their inward thought is, that their houses are for ever, their dwelling-places from generation to generation: they call the lands after their own names.

¹¹人は栄華のうちに長くとどまることはできない、滅びうせる獣にひとしい。

¹²Nevertheless, man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

¹²これぞ自分をたのむ愚かな者どもの成りゆき、自分の分け前を喜ぶ者どもの果である。〔セラ

¹³This their way is their folly, yet they that come after them delight in their sayings. Selah.

¹³彼らは陰府に定められた羊のように死が彼らを牧するであろう。彼らはまっすぐに墓に下り、そのかたちは消えうせ、陰府が彼らのすまいとなるであろう。

¹⁴Like sheep are they laid in Sheol: Death feedeth on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their comeliness shall be for Sheol to consume, that there be no habitation for them.

¹⁴しかし神はわたしを受けられるゆえ、わたしの魂を陰府の力からあがなわれる。〔セラ

¹⁵But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol: for he will receive me. Selah.

¹⁵人が富を得るときも、その家の栄えが増し加わるときも、恐れてはならない。

¹⁶Be not afraid when a man becometh rich, when the glory of his house is increased:

¹⁶彼が死ぬときは何ひとつ携え行くことができず、その栄えも彼に従って下って行くことはないからである。

¹⁷For when he dieth, he shall carry nothing away; his glory shall not descend after him.

¹⁷たとい彼が生きながらえる間、自分を幸福と思っても、またみずから幸な時に、人々から称賛されても、

¹⁸Though he blessed his soul in his lifetime, -- and men will praise thee when thou doest well to thyself, --

¹⁸彼はついにおのれの先祖の仲間に連なる。彼らは絶えて光を見ることがない。人は栄華のうちに長くとどまることはできない。滅びうせる獣にひとしい。

¹⁹It shall go to the generation of his fathers: they shall never see light.

¹⁹人は栄華のうちに長くとどまることはできない。滅びうせる獣にひとしい。

²⁰Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
