¹And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

¹Da tok Elifas fra Teman til orde og sa:

²Can a man be profitable to ùGod? surely it is unto himself that the wise man is profitable.

²Kan vel en mann være til gagn for Gud? Nei, bare sig selv gagner den forstandige.

³Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if thou art righteous? And is it gain [to him] that thou makest thy ways perfect?

³Er det til nogen nytte for den Allmektige at du er rettferdig, eller til nogen vinning at du vandrer ulastelig?

⁴Will he reason with thee for fear of thee? Will he enter with thee into judgment?

⁴Er det for din gudsfrykts skyld han refser dig eller går i rette med dig?

⁵Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities without end?

⁵Er ikke din ondskap stor og dine misgjerninger uten ende?

⁶For thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked.

⁶Du tok jo pant av dine brødre uten grunn og drog klærne av de nakne.

⁷Thou hast not given water to the fainting to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

⁷Du gav ikke den trette vann å drikke, og den sultne nektet du brød.

⁸But the powerful man, he had the land; and the man of high rank dwelt in it.

⁸Men den som gikk frem med vold, han fikk landet i eie, og den som var høit aktet, bodde i det.

⁹Widows hast thou sent empty away, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁹Enker har du latt fare tomhendt, og farløses armer blev knust.

¹⁰Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

¹⁰Derfor er det snarer rundt omkring dig, og en hastig redsel forferder dig.

¹¹Or darkness, that thou canst not see, and floods of waters cover thee.

¹¹Eller ser du ikke mørket og den vannflom som dekker dig?

¹²Is not +God in the height of the heavens? And behold the summit of the stars: how exalted are they!

¹²Er ikke Gud høi som himmelen? Og se de øverste stjerner, hvor høit de står!

¹³And thou sayest, What doth ùGod know? will he judge through the dark cloud?

¹³Og du sier: Hvad vet Gud? Kan han vel dømme gjennem mørket?

¹⁴Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh on the vault of the heavens.

¹⁴Skyene er et dekke for ham, så han ikke ser noget, og på himmelens hvelving vandrer han.

¹⁵Dost thou mark the ancient path which wicked men have trodden?

¹⁵Vil du følge den sti som syndens menn vandret på i de gamle dager,

¹⁶Who were carried off before the time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood;

¹⁶de som blev bortrykket før tiden, og under hvis føtter grunnen fløt bort som en strøm,

¹⁷Who said unto ùGod, Depart from us! and what could the Almighty do to them?

¹⁷de menn som sa til Gud: Vik fra oss, og som spurte hvad den Allmektige vel skulde kunne gjøre for dem,

¹⁸Yet he filled their houses with good. But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁸enda han hadde fylt deres hus med det som var godt? - Men de ugudeliges tanker er lang fra mine tanker. -

¹⁹The righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn:

¹⁹De rettferdige så det* og gledet sig, og de uskyldige spottet dem: / {* JBS 22, 16.}

²⁰Is not he who rose against us destroyed, and doth not the fire consume his residue?

²⁰Sannelig, våre fiender er tilintetgjort, og ild har fortært deres overflod.

²¹Reconcile thyself now with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

²¹Forlik dig nu med ham, så vil du få fred! Og så skal lykke times dig.

²²Receive, I pray thee, instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.

²²Ta imot lærdom av hans munn og legg dig hans ord på hjerte!

²³If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up. If thou remove unrighteousness far from thy tents,

²³Vender du om til den Allmektige, da skal din lykke bli bygget op igjen; men du må få urett bort fra dine telt.

²⁴And put the precious ore with the dust, and [the gold of] Ophir among the stones of the torrents,

²⁴Kast ditt gull i støvet og ditt Ofir-gull blandt bekkenes stener!

²⁵Then the Almighty will be thy precious ore, and silver heaped up unto thee;

²⁵Så skal den Allmektige være ditt gull, være som dynger av sølv for dig,

²⁶Yea, then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto +God:

²⁶for da skal du glede dig i den Allmektige og løfte ditt åsyn til Gud.

²⁷Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows;

²⁷Du skal bede til ham, og han skal høre dig, og du skal opfylle dine løfter,

²⁸And thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and light shall shine upon thy ways.

²⁸og setter du dig noget fore, da skal det lykkes for dig, og over dine veier skal det skinne lys;

²⁹When they are made low, then thou shalt say, Rise up! and he shall save him that is of downcast eyes.

²⁹når de fører nedover, skal du si: Opover! Han skal frelse den som slår sitt øie ned;

³⁰[Even] him that is not innocent shall he deliver; yea, he shall be delivered by the pureness of thy hands.

³⁰han skal redde endog den som ikke er uskyldig; ved dine henders renhet skal han bli reddet*. / {* når du beder for ham. 1TI 2, 8. JAK 5 16.}
