1{An instruction. Of Ethan the Ezrahite.} I will sing of the loving-kindness of Jehovah for ever; with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness from generation to generation.

2For I said, Loving-kindness shall be built up for ever; in the very heavens wilt thou establish thy faithfulness.

3I have made a covenant with mine elect, I have sworn unto David my servant:

4Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne from generation to generation. Selah.
4[Du sier:] Jeg har gjort en pakt med min utvalgte, jeg har svoret David, min tjener:
5And the heavens shall celebrate thy wonders, O Jehovah, and thy faithfulness in the congregation of the saints.
5Til evig tid vil jeg grunnfeste ditt avkom, og jeg vil bygge din trone fra slekt til slekt. Sela.
6For who in the heaven can be compared to Jehovah? [who] among the sons of the mighty shall be likened to Jehovah?

7ùGod is greatly to be feared in the council of the saints, and terrible for all that are round about him.

8Jehovah, God of hosts, who is like unto thee, the strong Jah? And thy faithfulness is round about thee.

9*Thou* rulest the pride of the sea: when its waves arise, *thou* stillest them.
9Herre, hærskarenes Gud, hvem er sterk som du, Herre? Og din trofasthet er rundt omkring dig.
10Thou hast crushed Rahab as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with the arm of thy strength.
10Du er den som hersker over havets overmot; når dets bølger reiser sig, lar du dem legge sig.
11Thine are the heavens, the earth also is thine; the world and its fulness, *thou* hast founded them.
11Du har sønderknust Rahab* som en ihjelslått; med din styrkes arm har du spredt dine fiender. / {* SLM 87, 4.}
12The north and the south, *thou* hast created them: Tabor and Hermon triumph in thy name.
12Dig hører himlene til, dig også jorden; jorderike og alt det som fyller det - du har grunnfestet dem;
13Thine is the arm of might: strong is thy hand, high is thy right hand.
13nord og syd - du har skapt dem; Tabor og Hermon jubler over ditt navn.
14Righteousness and judgment are the foundation of thy throne; loving-kindness and truth go before thy face.
14Du har en arm med velde; sterk er din hånd, ophøiet er din høire hånd.
15Blessed is the people that know the shout of joy: they walk, O Jehovah, in the light of thy countenance.
15Rettferd og rett er din trones grunnvoll; nåde og sannhet går frem for ditt åsyn.
16In thy name are they joyful all the day, and in thy righteousness are they exalted.
16Salig er det folk som kjenner til jubel*; Herre, i ditt åsyns lys skal de vandre. / {* nemlig over Herren, sin konge.}
17For thou art the glory of their strength; and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.
17I ditt navn skal de fryde sig hele dagen, og ved din rettferdighet blir de ophøiet.
18For Jehovah is our shield, and the Holy One of Israel, our king.
18For du er deres styrkes pryd, og ved din godhet ophøier du vårt horn.
19Then thou spakest in vision of thy Holy One, and saidst, I have laid help upon a mighty one; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.
19For Herren er vårt skjold, og Israels Hellige vår konge.
20I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:
20Dengang* talte du i et syn til dine fromme** og sa: Jeg har nedlagt hjelp hos en helt, jeg har ophøiet en ung mann av folket. / {* SLM 89, 4. 5.} / {** Guds folk.}
21With whom my hand shall be established; and mine arm shall strengthen him.
21Jeg har funnet David, min tjener, jeg har salvet ham med min hellige olje.
22No enemy shall exact upon him, nor the son of wickedness afflict him;
22Min hånd skal alltid være med ham, og min arm skal gi ham styrke.
23But I will beat down his adversaries before his face, and will smite them that hate him.
23Fienden skal ikke plage ham, og den urettferdige skal ikke undertrykke ham.
24And my faithfulness and my loving-kindness shall be with him, and by my name shall his horn be exalted.
24Men jeg vil sønderknuse hans motstandere for hans åsyn og slå dem som hater ham.
25And I will set his hand in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
25Og min trofasthet og min miskunnhet skal være med ham, og i mitt navn skal hans horn ophøies.
26*He* shall call unto me, Thou art my father, my ùGod, and the rock of my salvation;
26Og jeg vil la ham legge sin hånd på havet og sin høire hånd på elvene.
27And as to me, I will make him firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
27Han skal rope til mig: Du er min far, min Gud og min frelses klippe.
28My loving-kindness will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him;
28Og jeg vil gjøre ham til den førstefødte, til den høieste blandt kongene på jorden.
29And I will establish his seed for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
29Jeg vil bevare min miskunnhet mot ham til evig tid, og min pakt skal stå fast for ham.
30If his sons forsake my law, and walk not in mine ordinances;
30Og jeg vil la hans avkom bli til evig tid og hans trone som himmelens dager.
31If they profane my statutes, and keep not my commandments:
31Dersom hans barn forlater min lov og ikke vandrer i mine bud,
32Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.
32dersom de krenker mine forskrifter og ikke holder mine befalinger,
33Nevertheless my loving-kindness will I not utterly take from him, nor belie my faithfulness;
33da vil jeg hjemsøke deres synd med ris og deres misgjerning med plager.
34My covenant will I not profane, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
34Men min miskunnhet vil jeg ikke ta fra ham, og min trofasthet skal ikke svikte;
35Once have I sworn by my holiness; I will not lie unto David:
35jeg vil ikke bryte min pakt og ikke forandre hvad som gikk ut fra mine leber.
36His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me;
36Ett har jeg svoret ved min hellighet, sannelig, for David vil jeg ikke lyve:
37It shall be established for ever as the moon, and the witness in the sky is firm. Selah.
37Hans avkom skal bli til evig tid, og hans trone som solen for mitt åsyn.
38But thou hast rejected and cast off; thou hast been very wroth with thine anointed:
38Som månen skal den stå evindelig, og vidnet i det høie er trofast. Sela.
39Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant; thou hast profaned his crown to the ground:
39Og du har forkastet og forsmådd, du er blitt harm på din salvede.
40Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strongholds to ruin.
40Du har rystet av dig pakten med din tjener, du har vanhelliget hans krone ned i støvet.
41All that pass by the way plunder him; he is become a reproach to his neighbours.
41Du har revet ned alle hans murer, du har lagt hans festninger i grus.
42Thou hast exalted the right hand of his oppressors; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice:
42Alle de som går forbi på veien, har plyndret ham; han er blitt til hån for sine naboer.
43Yea, thou hast turned back the edge of his sword, and hast not made him stand in the battle.
43Du har ophøiet hans motstanderes høire hånd, du har gledet alle hans fiender.
44Thou hast made his brightness to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground;
44Og du lot hans skarpe sverd vike og lot ham ikke holde stand i striden.
45The days of his youth hast thou shortened; thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.
45Du har gjort ende på hans glans og kastet hans trone i støvet.
46How long, Jehovah, wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy fury burn like fire?
46Du har forkortet hans ungdoms dager, du har dekket ham med skam. Sela.
47Remember, as regards me, what life is. Wherefore hast thou created all the children of men to be vanity?
47Hvor lenge, Herre, vil du skjule dig evindelig? Hvor lenge skal din harme brenne som ild?
48What man liveth, and shall not see death? Shall he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah.
48Kom dog i hu hvor kort mitt liv er, hvor forgjengelige du har skapt alle menneskenes barn!
49Where, Lord, are thy former loving-kindnesses, [which] thou swarest unto David in thy faithfulness?
49Hvem er den mann som lever og ikke ser døden, som frir sin sjel fra dødsrikets vold? Sela.
50Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants -- that I bear in my bosom [that of] all the mighty peoples --
50Hvor er, Herre, dine forrige nådegjerninger, som du tilsvor David i din trofasthet?
51Wherewith thine enemies, O Jehovah, have reproached, wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed.
51Kom i hu, Herre, dine tjeneres vanære, at jeg må bære alle de mange folk i mitt skjød,
52Blessed be Jehovah for evermore! Amen, and Amen.
52at dine fiender håner, Herre, at de håner din salvedes fotspor!
53Lovet være Herren til evig tid! Amen, amen.
