1Now in those days comes John the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh.
2กล่าวว่า "ท่านทั้งหลายจงกลับใจเสียใหม่ เพราะว่าอาณาจักรแห่งสวรรค์มาใกล้แล้ว"
3For this is he who has been spoken of through Esaias the prophet, saying, Voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: prepare ye the way of [the] Lord, make straight his paths.
3ยอห์นผู้นี้แหละซึ่งตรัสถึงโดยอิสยาห์ศาสดาพยากรณ์ว่า `เสียงผู้ร้องในถิ่นทุรกันดารว่า ท่านจงเตรียมมรรคาขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า จงกระทำหนทางของพระองค์ให้ตรงไป'
4And John himself had his garment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and wild honey.
4เสื้อผ้าของยอห์นผู้นี้ทำด้วยขนอูฐ และท่านใช้หนังสัตว์คาดเอว อาหารของท่านคือตั๊กแตนและน้ำผึ้งป่า
5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the country round the Jordan,
5ขณะนั้นชาวกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม และคนทั่วแคว้นยูเดีย และคนทั่วลุ่มแม่น้ำจอร์แดน ก็ออกไปหายอห์น
6and were baptised by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
6และได้รับบัพติศมาจากยอห์นในแม่น้ำจอร์แดน ด้วยการสารภาพความผิดบาปของตน
7But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath?
7ครั้นยอห์นเห็นพวกฟาริสีและพวกสะดูสีพากันมาเป็นอันมากเพื่อจะรับบัพติศมา ท่านจึงกล่าวแก่เขาว่า "โอ เจ้าชาติงูร้าย ใครได้เตือนเจ้าให้หนีจากพระอาชญาซึ่งจะมาถึงนั้น
8Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance.
8เหตุฉะนั้นจงพิสูจน์การกลับใจของเจ้าด้วยผลที่เกิดขึ้น
9And do not think to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father; for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
9อย่านึกเหมาเอาในใจว่า เรามีอับราฮัมเป็นบิดา เพราะเราบอกเจ้าทั้งหลายว่า พระเจ้าทรงฤทธิ์สามารถจะให้บุตรเกิดขึ้นแก่อับราฮัมจากก้อนหินเหล่านี้ได้
10And already the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.
10บัดนี้ขวานวางไว้ที่โคนต้นไม้แล้ว ดังนั้นทุกต้นที่ไม่เกิดผลดีจะต้องตัดแล้วโยนทิ้งในกองไฟ
11*I* indeed baptise you with water to repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not fit to bear; *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire;
11เราให้เจ้าทั้งหลายรับบัพติศมาด้วยน้ำ แสดงว่ากลับใจใหม่ก็จริง แต่พระองค์ผู้จะมาภายหลังเรา ทรงมีอิทธิฤทธิ์ยิ่งกว่าเราอีก ซึ่งเราไม่คู่ควรแม้จะถือฉลองพระบาทของพระองค์ พระองค์จะทรงให้เจ้าทั้งหลายรับบัพติศมาด้วยพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์และด้วยไฟ
12whose winnowing fan [is] in his hand, and he shall thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and shall gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
12พระหัตถ์ของพระองค์ถือพลั่วพร้อมแล้ว และจะทรงชำระลานข้าวของพระองค์ให้ทั่ว พระองค์จะทรงเก็บข้าวของพระองค์ไว้ในยุ้งฉาง แต่พระองค์จะทรงเผาแกลบด้วยไฟที่ไม่รู้ดับ"
13Then comes Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptised of him;
13แล้วพระเยซูเสด็จจากแคว้นกาลิลีมาหายอห์นที่แม่น้ำจอร์แดน เพื่อจะรับบัพติศมาจากท่าน
14but John urgently forbad him, saying, *I* have need to be baptised of thee; and comest *thou* to me?
14แต่ยอห์นทูลห้ามพระองค์ว่า "ข้าพระองค์ต้องการจะรับบัพติศมาจากพระองค์ ควรหรือที่พระองค์จะเสด็จมาหาข้าพระองค์"
15But Jesus answering said to him, Suffer [it] now; for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffers him.
15และพระเยซูตรัสตอบยอห์นว่า "บัดนี้จงยอมเถิด เพราะสมควรที่เราทั้งหลายจะกระทำตามสิ่งชอบธรรมทุกประการ" แล้วท่านก็ยอมทำตามพระองค์
16And Jesus, having been baptised, went up straightway from the water, and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him:
16และพระเยซูเมื่อพระองค์ทรงรับบัพติศมาแล้ว ในทันใดนั้นก็เสด็จขึ้นจากน้ำ และดูเถิด ท้องฟ้าก็แหวกออก และพระองค์ได้ทอดพระเนตรเห็นพระวิญญาณของพระเจ้าเสด็จลงมาดุจนกเขาและสถิตอยู่บนพระองค์
17and behold, a voice out of the heavens saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my delight.
17และดูเถิด มีพระสุรเสียงตรัสจากฟ้าสวรรค์ว่า "ท่านผู้นี้เป็นบุตรที่รักของเรา เราชอบใจท่านมาก"
