²Ich will meinen Mund zu einem Spruche öffnen, will Rätsel vortragen aus alter Zeit,

³was wir gehört und gelernt und was unsre Väter uns erzählt haben.

⁴Es wurde ihren Söhnen nicht vorenthalten, sondern sie haben dem spätern Geschlecht den Ruhm des HERRN erzählt, seine Macht und seine Wunder, die er getan,

⁷daß diese auf Gott ihr Vertrauen setzten und nicht vergäßen die Taten Gottes und seine Gebote befolgten

⁸und nicht würden wie ihre Väter, ein abtrünniges und widerspenstiges Geschlecht, ein Geschlecht, das kein festes Herz hatte, und dessen Geist nicht treu war gegen Gott.

⁹Die Kinder Ephraims, geübte Bogenschützen, wandten um am Tage der Schlacht.

¹⁰Sie bewahrten den Bund Gottes nicht und wollten nicht nach seinem Gesetze wandeln.

¹¹Und sie vergaßen seine Taten und seine Wunder, die er ihnen erzeigt.

¹²Vor ihren Vätern hatte er Wunder getan im Lande Ägypten, im Gefilde Zoan.

¹⁵Er spaltete Felsen in der Wüste und tränkte sie wie mit großen Fluten,

¹⁶und ließ Bäche aus dem Felsen hervorspringen und Wasser herabfließen in Strömen.

¹⁷Dennoch fuhren sie fort, wider ihn zu sündigen und den Höchsten zu erzürnen in der Wüste.

¹⁷Heoi ka hara ano ratou ki a ia: whakatoi ana ki te Runga Rawa i te koraha.

¹⁸Und sie versuchten Gott in ihrem Herzen, indem sie Speise forderten nach ihrem Gelüste.

¹⁹Und sie redeten wider Gott und sprachen: «Kann Gott einen Tisch bereiten in der Wüste?

²⁰Siehe, er hat den Felsen geschlagen, daß Wasser flossen und Bäche sich ergossen. Kann er aber auch Brot geben? Wird er seinem Volke Fleisch verschaffen?»

²¹Darum, als der HERR das hörte, ward er entrüstet, und Feuer entbrannte wider Jakob, ja, Zorn stieg auf über Israel,

²²weil sie Gott nicht glaubten und nicht auf seine Hilfe vertrauten.

²³Und er gebot den Wolken droben und öffnete die Türen des Himmels;

²⁵Der Mensch aß Engelsbrot; er sandte ihnen Speise genug.

²⁶Er erregte den Ostwind am Himmel und führte durch seine Kraft den Südwind herbei,

²⁷ließ Fleisch auf sie regnen wie Staub und beschwingte Vögel wie Sand am Meer,

²⁸und ließ sie fallen mitten in ihr Lager, rings um ihre Wohnung her.

²⁹Da aßen sie und wurden allzu satt; was sie gewünscht hatten, gewährte er ihnen.

³⁰Sie hatten sich ihres Gelüstes noch nicht entschlagen, und ihre Speise war noch in ihrem Munde,

³¹als der Zorn Gottes sich wider sie erhob und die Fetten unter ihnen erwürgte und die Jungmannschaft Israels darniederstürzte.

³²Trotz alledem sündigten sie weiter und glaubten nicht an seine Wunder.

³²Ahakoa pa katoa tenei, i hara ano ratou, kihai ano i whakapono ki ana mahi whakamiharo.

³³Darum ließ er ihre Tage wie einen Hauch vergehen und ihre Jahre durch plötzlichen Untergang.

³⁴Wenn er sie tötete, so suchten sie ihn und kehrten sich wieder zu Gott

³⁵und dachten daran, daß Gott ihr Fels sei, und Gott, der Höchste, ihr Erlöser.

³⁶Aber sie heuchelten ihm mit ihrem Munde und logen mit ihren Zungen;

³⁶Otiia kei te patipati o ratou mangai ki a ia, a teka ana o ratou arero ki a ia.

³⁷denn ihr Herz war nicht aufrichtig gegen ihn, und sie hielten nicht treu an seinem Bund.

³⁷Kihai hoki to ratou ngakau i tika ki a ia; kihai ano ratou i u ki tana kawenata.

³⁸Er aber war barmherzig und vergab die Schuld und vertilgte sie nicht und hat oftmals seinen Zorn abgewandt und nicht allen seinen Grimm erweckt;

³⁹denn er dachte daran, daß sie Fleisch seien, ein Wind, der hinfährt und nicht wiederkehrt.

⁴⁰Wie oft empörten sie sich wider ihn in der Wüste und betrübten ihn in der Einöde!

⁴¹Und sie versuchten Gott immer wieder und kränkten den Heiligen Israels.

⁴²Sie sind seiner Hand nicht eingedenk gewesen, des Tages, da er sie vom Feinde erlöste;

⁴³da er seine Zeichen tat in Ägypten und seine Wunder im Gefilde Zoan;

⁴⁵da er Ungeziefer unter sie sandte, das sie fraß, und Frösche, die sie verderbten;

⁴⁶da er den Fressern ihre Früchte gab und den Heuschrecken ihre Erzeugnisse;

⁴⁷da er ihre Weinstöcke mit Hagel schlug und ihre Maulbeerbäume mit Schlossen

⁴⁷Whakamatea ana e ia a ratou waina ki te whatu, a ratou rakau hikamora ki te haupapa.

⁴⁸und ihr Vieh dem Hagel preisgab und ihre Herden den Wetterstrahlen;

⁴⁸Tukua ana e ia a ratou kararehe ma te whatu, a ratou kahui ma nga uira.

⁴⁹da er gegen sie die Glut seines Zornes entsandte, Grimm und Ungnade und Drangsal, Scharen von Unglücksengeln;

⁴⁹I tukua whakareretia e ia ki a ratou tona riri, aritarita, weriweri, me te raruraru; he whakaeke na nga anahera kino.

⁵⁰da er seinem Zorn den Lauf ließ, ihre Seele nicht vor dem Tod bewahrte, sondern ihr Leben der Pest preisgab;

⁵¹da er alle Erstgeburt in Ägypten schlug, die Erstlinge ihrer Kraft in den Hütten Hams.

⁵²Und er ließ sein Volk ausziehen wie Schafe und leitete sie wie eine Herde in der Wüste

⁵³und führte sie sicher, daß sie sich nicht fürchteten; ihre Feinde aber bedeckte das Meer.

⁵⁴Und er brachte sie in die Grenzen seines Heiligtums; zu diesem Berg, den seine Rechte erworben.

⁵⁴Na ka kawea ratou e ia ki te rohe o tona wahi tapu, ki tenei maunga, i hokona nei e tona matau.

⁵⁵Und er vertrieb vor ihnen her die Heiden und teilte ihnen das Erbe aus mit der Meßschnur und ließ in ihren Zelten die Stämme Israels wohnen.

⁵⁶Aber sie versuchten und erzürnten den höchsten Gott und hielten seine Zeugnisse nicht,

⁵⁷sondern wichen zurück und fielen ab wie ihre Väter; sie gingen fehl wie ein trügerischer Bogen.

⁵⁸Und sie reizten ihn zum Zorn durch ihre Höhen und zur Eifersucht durch ihre Götzen.

⁵⁸Na ko o ratou wahi tiketike hei whakapataritari i a ia; ko o ratou whakapakoko hei mea i a ia kia hae.

⁵⁹Gott hörte es und entrüstete sich und verabscheute Israel sehr.

⁵⁹I te rongonga o te Atua, ka riri, ka tino whakarihariha hoki ki a Iharaira.

⁶⁰Und er verließ seine Wohnung zu Silo, das Zelt, wo er unter den Menschen wohnte,

⁶¹und gab seine Macht in Gefangenschaft und seine Herrlichkeit in Feindeshand,

⁶²und überlieferte sein Volk dem Schwert und war entrüstet über sein Erbe.

⁶³Seine Jünglinge hat das Feuer verzehrt, und seine Jungfrauen mußten ohne Brautlied bleiben.

⁶⁴Seine Priester sind durchs Schwert gefallen, und seine Witwen konnten nicht weinen.

⁶⁴I hinga o ratou tohunga i te hoari; kihai hoki i tangi a ratou pouaru.

⁶⁵Da erwachte der Herr wie ein Schlafender, wie ein Starker, der sich Mut zugetrunken.

⁶⁵Na ka maranga te Ariki ano ko tetahi i te moe, me te tangata kaha e hamama ana i te waina.

⁶⁶Und er schlug seine Feinde zurück, ewige Schande fügte er ihnen zu.

⁶⁶A patua iho e ia a muri o ona hoariri, meinga ana ratou e ia hei taunutanga mo ake tonu atu.

⁶⁷Und er verwarf das Zelt Josephs und erwählte nicht den Stamm Ephraim,

⁶⁸sondern erwählte den Stamm Juda, den Berg Zion, welchen er liebt.

⁶⁹Und er baute sein Heiligtum wie Himmelshöhen, gleich der Erde, die er auf ewig gegründet hat.

⁷⁰Und er erwählte seinen Knecht David und nahm ihn von den Schafhürden weg.

⁷¹Da er den tragenden Schafen nachging, holte er ihn, daß er weiden sollte Jakob, sein Volk, und Israel, sein Erbe.

⁷¹Mauria ana mai e ia i te whai i nga hipi whaereere, hei whangai i a Hakopa, i tana iwi, i a Iharaira hoki, i tona kainga tupu.

⁷²Und er weidete sie mit aller Treue seines Herzens und leitete sie mit geschickter Hand.
