¹אהובי אל תאמינו לכל רוח כי אם בחנו הרוחות אם מאלהים המה כי נביאי שקר רבים יצאו לעולם׃

¹Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

²בזאת תכירו את רוח אלהים כל רוח המודה בישוע המשיח כי בא בבשר מאלהים הוא׃

²By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,

³וכל רוח אשר איננו מודה בישוע האדון כי בא בבשר לא מאלהים הוא וזה הוא רוח צר המשיח אשר שמעתם עליו כי בוא יבא ועתה הנה הוא בעולם׃

³and every spirit who doesn’t confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God, and this is the spirit of the Antichrist, of whom you have heard that it comes. Now it is in the world already.

⁴אתם הבנים הנכם מאלהים ונצחתם אתם כי אשר בכם גדול הוא מאשר בעולם׃

⁴You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.

⁵המה מן העולם על כן מהעולם ידברו והעולם ישמע אליהם׃

⁵They are of the world. Therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them.

⁶ואנחנו מאלהים הננו היודע את האלהים ישמע אלינו ואשר איננו מאלהים לא ישמע אלינו בזאת נכיר את רוח האמת ואת רוח התועה׃

⁶We are of God. He who knows God listens to us. He who is not of God doesn’t listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

⁷אהובי נאהב נא איש את רעהו כי האהבה מאלהים היא וכל אשר יאהב נולד מאלהים וידע את האלהים׃

⁷Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God, and knows God.

⁸ואשר איננו אהב לא ידע את האלהים כי האלהים הוא אהבה׃

⁸He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.

⁹בזאת נראתה אהבת האלהים לנו כי שלח האלהים את בנו את יחידו לעולם למען נחיה על ידו׃

⁹By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

¹⁰בזאת היא האהבה לא שאנחנו אהבנו את האלהים כי אם הוא אהב אותנו וישלח את בנו לכפרה על חטאתינו׃

¹⁰In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice “atoning sacrifice” is from the Greek “hilasmos,” an appeasing, propitiating, or the means of appeasement or propitiation—the sacrifice that turns away God’s wrath because of our sin. for our sins.

¹¹אהובי אם ככה אהב אתנו האלהים גם אנחנו חיבים לאהבה איש את רעהו׃

¹¹Beloved, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another.

¹²את האלהים לא ראה איש מעולם ואם נאהב איש את רעהו האלהים יעמד בקרבנו ואהבתו נשלמה בנו׃

¹²No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us.

¹³בזאת נדע אשר בו נקום והוא בנו כי נתן לנו מרוחו׃

¹³By this we know that we remain in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

¹⁴ואנחנו חזינו ונעידה כי האב שלח את הבן מושיע העולם׃

¹⁴We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world.

¹⁵כל המודה כי ישוע הוא בן האלהים האלהים שכן בו והוא באלהים׃

¹⁵Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him, and he in God.

¹⁶ואנחנו ידענו ונאמן באהבה אשר אלהים אהב אתנו האלהים הוא אהבה והעמד באהבה עמד באלהים והאלהים עמד בו׃

¹⁶We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.

¹⁷ובזאת נשלמה בנו האהבה בהיות לנו בטחון ביום הדין כי כמהו כן גם אנחנו בעולם הזה׃

¹⁷In this love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so are we in this world.

¹⁸אין אימה באהבה כי אם האהבה השלמה תגרש את האימה כי באימה מעצבה ואשר באימה איננו שלם באהבה׃

¹⁸There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.

¹⁹אנחנו אהבים אתו כי הוא קדם לאהבה אתנו׃

¹⁹We love him, because he first loved us.

²⁰כי יאמר איש אהב אני את האלהים והוא שנא את אחיו כזב הוא כי אשר לא יאהב את אחיו אשר הוא ראה איככה יוכל לאהב את האלהים אשר איננו ראה אתו׃

²⁰If a man says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?

²¹וזאת המצוה יש לנו מאתו כי האהב את האלהים יאהב גם את אחיו׃

²¹This commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should also love his brother.
