¹וידבר יהוה אל משה במדבר סיני באהל מועד באחד לחדש השני בשנה השנית לצאתם מארץ מצרים לאמר׃

¹ Yahweh “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

²שאו את ראש כל עדת בני ישראל למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות כל זכר לגלגלתם׃

²“Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, every male, one by one;

³מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא בישראל תפקדו אתם לצבאתם אתה ואהרן׃

³from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them by their divisions.

⁴ואתכם יהיו איש איש למטה איש ראש לבית אבתיו הוא׃

⁴With you there shall be a man of every tribe; everyone head of his fathers’ house.

⁵ואלה שמות האנשים אשר יעמדו אתכם לראובן אליצור בן שדיאור׃

⁵These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: Of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur.

⁶לשמעון שלמיאל בן צורישדי׃

⁶Of Simeon: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

⁷ליהודה נחשון בן עמינדב׃

⁷Of Judah: Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

⁸ליששכר נתנאל בן צוער׃

⁸Of Issachar: Nethanel the son of Zuar.

⁹לזבולן אליאב בן חלן׃

⁹Of Zebulun: Eliab the son of Helon.

¹⁰לבני יוסף לאפרים אלישמע בן עמיהוד למנשה גמליאל בן פדהצור׃

¹⁰Of the children of Joseph: Of Ephraim: Elishama the son of Ammihud. Of Manasseh: Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

¹¹לבנימן אבידן בן גדעני׃

¹¹Of Benjamin: Abidan the son of Gideoni.

¹²לדן אחיעזר בן עמישדי׃

¹²Of Dan: Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

¹³לאשר פגעיאל בן עכרן׃

¹³Of Asher: Pagiel the son of Ochran.

¹⁴לגד אליסף בן דעואל׃

¹⁴Of Gad: Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

¹⁵לנפתלי אחירע בן עינן׃

¹⁵Of Naphtali: Ahira the son of Enan.”

¹⁶אלה קריאי העדה נשיאי מטות אבותם ראשי אלפי ישראל הם׃

¹⁶These are those who were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.

¹⁷ויקח משה ואהרן את האנשים האלה אשר נקבו בשמות׃

¹⁷Moses and Aaron took these men who are mentioned by name.

¹⁸ואת כל העדה הקהילו באחד לחדש השני ויתילדו על משפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה לגלגלתם׃

¹⁸They assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they declared their ancestry by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, one by one.

¹⁹כאשר צוה יהוה את משה ויפקדם במדבר סיני׃

¹⁹As Yahweh commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

²⁰ויהיו בני ראובן בכר ישראל תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות לגלגלתם כל זכר מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

²⁰The children of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, one by one, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;

²¹פקדיהם למטה ראובן ששה וארבעים אלף וחמש מאות׃

²¹those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty-six thousand five hundred.

²²לבני שמעון תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם פקדיו במספר שמות לגלגלתם כל זכר מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

²²Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, those who were numbered of it, according to the number of the names, one by one, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;

²³פקדיהם למטה שמעון תשעה וחמשים אלף ושלש מאות׃

²³those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.

²⁴לבני גד תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

²⁴Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;

²⁵פקדיהם למטה גד חמשה וארבעים אלף ושש מאות וחמשים׃

²⁵those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.

²⁶לבני יהודה תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

²⁶Of the children of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;

²⁷פקדיהם למטה יהודה ארבעה ושבעים אלף ושש מאות׃

²⁷those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Judah, were sixty-four thousand six hundred.

²⁸לבני יששכר תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

²⁸Of the children of Issachar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;

²⁹פקדיהם למטה יששכר ארבעה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות׃

²⁹those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.

³⁰לבני זבולן תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

³⁰Of the children of Zebulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;

³¹פקדיהם למטה זבולן שבעה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות׃

³¹those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.

³²לבני יוסף לבני אפרים תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

³²Of the children of Joseph, of the children of Ephraim, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;

³³פקדיהם למטה אפרים ארבעים אלף וחמש מאות׃

³³those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand five hundred.

³⁴לבני מנשה תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

³⁴Of the children of Manasseh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;

³⁵פקדיהם למטה מנשה שנים ושלשים אלף ומאתים׃

³⁵those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.

³⁶לבני בנימן תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

³⁶Of the children of Benjamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;

³⁷פקדיהם למטה בנימן חמשה ושלשים אלף וארבע מאות׃

³⁷those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty-five thousand four hundred.

³⁸לבני דן תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

³⁸Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war;

³⁹פקדיהם למטה דן שנים וששים אלף ושבע מאות׃

³⁹those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.

⁴⁰לבני אשר תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

⁴⁰Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war;

⁴¹פקדיהם למטה אשר אחד וארבעים אלף וחמש מאות׃

⁴¹those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty-one thousand five hundred.

⁴²בני נפתלי תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא׃

⁴²Of the children of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war;

⁴³פקדיהם למטה נפתלי שלשה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות׃

⁴³those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.

⁴⁴אלה הפקדים אשר פקד משה ואהרן ונשיאי ישראל שנים עשר איש איש אחד לבית אבתיו היו׃

⁴⁴These are those who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: they were each one for his fathers’ house.

⁴⁵ויהיו כל פקודי בני ישראל לבית אבתם מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא בישראל׃

⁴⁵So all those who were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war in Israel;

⁴⁶ויהיו כל הפקדים שש מאות אלף ושלשת אלפים וחמש מאות וחמשים׃

⁴⁶even all those who were numbered were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.

⁴⁷והלוים למטה אבתם לא התפקדו בתוכם׃

⁴⁷But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

⁴⁸וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר׃

⁴⁸For Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

⁴⁹אך את מטה לוי לא תפקד ואת ראשם לא תשא בתוך בני ישראל׃

⁴⁹“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, neither shall you take a census of them among the children of Israel;

⁵⁰ואתה הפקד את הלוים על משכן העדת ועל כל כליו ועל כל אשר לו המה ישאו את המשכן ואת כל כליו והם ישרתהו וסביב למשכן יחנו׃

⁵⁰but appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle, and all its furnishings; and they shall take care of it, and shall encamp around it.

⁵¹ובנסע המשכן יורידו אתו הלוים ובחנת המשכן יקימו אתו הלוים והזר הקרב יומת׃

⁵¹When the tabernacle is to move, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it up. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death.

⁵²וחנו בני ישראל איש על מחנהו ואיש על דגלו לצבאתם׃

⁵²The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their divisions.

⁵³והלוים יחנו סביב למשכן העדת ולא יהיה קצף על עדת בני ישראל ושמרו הלוים את משמרת משכן העדות׃

⁵³But the Levites shall encamp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall be responsible for the Tabernacle of the Testimony.”

⁵⁴ויעשו בני ישראל ככל אשר צוה יהוה את משה כן עשו׃

⁵⁴Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they did.
