¹Þegar þeir nálgast Jerúsalem og koma til Betfage og Betaníu við Olíufjallið, sendir hann tvo lærisveina sína

¹When they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethsphage TR & NU read “Bethphage” instead of “Bethsphage” and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

²og segir við þá: ,,Farið í þorpið hér framundan ykkur. Um leið og þið komið þangað, munuð þið finna fola bundinn, sem enginn hefur enn komið á bak. Leysið hann, og komið með hann.

²and said to them, “Go your way into the village that is opposite you. Immediately as you enter into it, you will find a young donkey tied, on which no one has sat. Untie him, and bring him.

³Ef einhver spyr ykkur: ,Hvers vegna gjörið þið þetta?` Þá svarið: ,Herrann þarf hans við, hann sendir hann jafnskjótt aftur hingað.```

³ If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs him;’ and immediately he will send him back here.”

⁴Þeir fóru og fundu folann bundinn við dyr úti á strætinu og leystu hann.

⁴They went away, and found a young donkey tied at the door outside in the open street, and they untied him.

⁵Nokkrir sem stóðu þar, sögðu við þá: ,,Hvers vegna eruð þið að leysa folann?``

⁵Some of those who stood there asked them, “What are you doing, untying the young donkey?”

⁶Þeir svöruðu eins og Jesús hafði sagt, og þeir létu þá fara.

⁶They said to them just as Jesus had said, and they let them go.

⁷Síðan færðu þeir Jesú folann og lögðu á hann klæði sín, en hann settist á bak.

⁷They brought the young donkey to Jesus, and threw their garments on it, and Jesus sat on it.

⁸Og margir breiddu klæði sín á veginn, en aðrir lim, sem þeir höfðu skorið á völlunum.

⁸Many spread their garments on the way, and others were cutting down branches from the trees, and spreading them on the road.

⁹Þeir sem á undan fóru og eftir fylgdu, hrópuðu: ,,Hósanna! Blessaður sé sá sem kemur, í nafni Drottins!

⁹Those who went in front, and those who followed, cried out, “Hosanna “Hosanna” means “save us” or “help us, we pray.” ! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Psalm 118:25-26

¹⁰Blessað sé hið komandi ríki föður vors Davíðs! Hósanna í hæstum hæðum!``

¹⁰Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

¹¹Hann fór inn í Jerúsalem og í helgidóminn. Þar leit hann yfir allt, en þar sem komið var kvöld, fór hann til Betaníu með þeim tólf.

¹¹Jesus entered into the temple in Jerusalem. When he had looked around at everything, it being now evening, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

¹²Á leiðinni frá Betaníu morguninn eftir kenndi hann hungurs.

¹²The next day, when they had come out from Bethany, he was hungry.

¹³Þá sá hann álengdar laufgað fíkjutré og fór að gá, hvort hann fyndi nokkuð á því. En þegar hann kom að því, fann hann ekkert nema blöð, enda var ekki fíknatíð.

¹³Seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came to see if perhaps he might find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.

¹⁴Hann sagði þá við tréð: ,,Enginn neyti framar ávaxtar af þér að eilífu!`` Þetta heyrðu lærisveinar hans.

¹⁴Jesus told it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” and his disciples heard it.

¹⁵Þeir komu til Jerúsalem, og hann gekk í helgidóminn og tók að reka út þá, sem voru að selja þar og kaupa, og hratt um borðum víxlaranna og stólum dúfnasalanna.

¹⁵They came to Jerusalem, and Jesus entered into the temple, and began to throw out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the seats of those who sold the doves.

¹⁶Og engum leyfði hann að bera neitt um helgidóminn.

¹⁶He would not allow anyone to carry a container through the temple.

¹⁷Og hann kenndi þeim og sagði: ,,Er ekki ritað: ,Hús mitt á að vera bænahús fyrir allar þjóðir?` En þér hafið gjört það að ræningjabæli.``

¹⁷He taught, saying to them, “Isn’t it written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations?’ Isaiah 56:7 But you have made it a den of robbers!” Jeremiah 7:11

¹⁸Æðstu prestarnir og fræðimennirnir heyrðu þetta og leituðu fyrir sér, hvernig þeir gætu ráðið hann af dögum. Þeim stóð ótti af honum, því að allur lýðurinn hreifst mjög af kenningu hans.

¹⁸The chief priests and the scribes heard it, and sought how they might destroy him. For they feared him, because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.

¹⁹Þegar leið að kvöldi, fóru þeir úr borginni.

¹⁹When evening came, he went out of the city.

²⁰Árla morguns fóru þeir hjá fíkjutrénu og sáu, að það var visnað frá rótum.

²⁰As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.

²¹Pétur minntist þess, sem gerst hafði, og segir við hann: ,,Rabbí, sjáðu! fíkjutréð, sem þú formæltir, er visnað.``

²¹Peter, remembering, said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which you cursed has withered away.”

²²Jesús svaraði þeim: ,,Trúið á Guð.

²²Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God.

²³Sannlega segi ég yður: Hver sem segir við fjall þetta: ,Lyft þér upp, og steyp þér í hafið,` og efar ekki í hjarta sínu, heldur trúir, að svo fari sem hann mælir, honum mun verða að því.

²³ For most certainly I tell you, whoever may tell this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening; he shall have whatever he says.

²⁴Fyrir því segi ég yður: Hvers sem þér biðjið í bæn yðar, þá trúið, að þér hafið öðlast það, og yður mun það veitast.

²⁴ Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them, and you shall have them.

²⁵Og þegar þér eruð að biðja, þá fyrirgefið, ef yður þykir nokkuð við einhvern, til þess að faðir yðar á himnum fyrirgefi einnig yður misgjörðir yðar. [

²⁵ Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.

²⁶Ef þér fyrirgefið ekki, mun faðir yðar á himnum ekki heldur fyrirgefa misgjörðir yðar. ]``

²⁶ But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your transgressions.”

²⁷Þeir koma aftur til Jerúsalem, og þegar hann var á gangi í helgidóminum, koma til hans æðstu prestarnir, fræðimennirnir og öldungarnir

²⁷They came again to Jerusalem, and as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders came to him,

²⁸og segja við hann: ,,Með hvaða valdi gjörir þú þetta? Hver gaf þér það vald, að þú gjörir þetta?``

²⁸and they began saying to him, “By what authority do you do these things? Or who gave you this authority to do these things?”

²⁹Jesús sagði við þá: ,,Ég vil leggja eina spurningu fyrir yður. Svarið henni, og ég mun segja yður, með hvaða valdi ég gjöri þetta.

²⁹Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

³⁰Var skírn Jóhannesar frá himni eða frá mönnum? Svarið mér!``

³⁰ The baptism of John—was it from heaven, or from men? Answer me.”

³¹Þeir ráðguðust hver við annan um þetta og sögðu: ,,Ef vér svörum: Frá himni, spyr hann: Hví trúðuð þér honum þá ekki?

³¹They reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we should say, ‘From heaven;’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
