¹Þá tók Jesús enn að tala við þá í dæmisögum og mælti:

¹Jesus answered and spoke again in parables to them, saying,

²,,Líkt er um himnaríki og konung einn, sem gjörði brúðkaup sonar síns.

² “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who made a marriage feast for his son,

³Hann sendi þjóna sína að kalla til brúðkaupsins þá, sem boðnir voru, en þeir vildu ekki koma.

³ and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast, but they would not come.

⁴Aftur sendi hann aðra þjóna og mælti: ,Segið þeim, sem boðnir voru: Veislu mína hef ég búið, uxum mínum og alifé er slátrað, og allt er tilbúið, komið í brúðkaupið.`

⁴ Again he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner. My cattle and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the marriage feast!”’

⁵En þeir skeyttu því ekki. Einn fór á akur sinn, annar til kaupskapar síns,

⁵ But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise,

⁶en hinir tóku þjóna hans, misþyrmdu þeim og drápu.

⁶ and the rest grabbed his servants, and treated them shamefully, and killed them.

⁷Konungur reiddist, sendi út her sinn og lét tortíma morðingjum þessum og brenna borg þeirra.

⁷ When the king heard that, he was angry, and sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

⁸Síðan segir hann við þjóna sína: ,Brúðkaupsveislan er tilbúin, en hinir boðnu voru ekki verðugir.

⁸ “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited weren’t worthy.

⁹Farið því út á vegamót, og bjóðið í brúðkaupið hverjum þeim sem þér finnið.`

⁹ Go therefore to the intersections of the highways, and as many as you may find, invite to the marriage feast.’

¹⁰Þjónarnir fóru út á vegina og söfnuðu öllum, sem þeir fundu, vondum og góðum, svo að brúðkaupssalurinn varð alskipaður gestum.

¹⁰ Those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together as many as they found, both bad and good. The wedding was filled with guests.

¹¹Konungur gekk þá inn að sjá gestina og leit þar mann, sem var ekki búinn brúðkaupsklæðum.

¹¹ But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who didn’t have on wedding clothing,

¹²Hann segir við hann: ,Vinur, hvernig ert þú hér kominn og ert ekki í brúðkaupsklæðum?` Maðurinn gat engu svarað.

¹² and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here not wearing wedding clothing?’ He was speechless.

¹³Konungur sagði þá við þjóna sína: ,Bindið hann á höndum og fótum og varpið honum í ystu myrkur. Þar verður grátur og gnístran tanna.`

¹³ Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness; there is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.’

¹⁴Því að margir eru kallaðir, en fáir útvaldir.``

¹⁴ For many are called, but few chosen.”

¹⁵Þá gengu farísearnir burt og tóku saman ráð sín, hvernig þeir gætu flækt hann í orðum.

¹⁵Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might entrap him in his talk.

¹⁶Þeir senda til hans lærisveina sína ásamt Heródesarsinnum, og þeir segja: ,,Meistari, vér vitum, að þú ert sannorður og kennir Guðs veg í sannleika, þú hirðir ekki um álit neins, enda gjörir þú þér engan mannamun.

¹⁶They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God in truth, no matter whom you teach, for you aren’t partial to anyone.

¹⁷Seg oss því, hvað þér líst? Leyfist að gjalda keisaranum skatt eða ekki?``

¹⁷Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”

¹⁸Jesús þekkti illsku þeirra og sagði: ,,Hví freistið þér mín, hræsnarar?

¹⁸But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?

¹⁹Sýnið mér peninginn, sem goldinn er í skatt.`` Þeir fengu honum denar.

¹⁹ Show me the tax money.” They brought to him a denarius.

²⁰Hann spyr: ,,Hvers mynd og yfirskrift er þetta?``

²⁰He asked them, “Whose is this image and inscription?”

²¹Þeir svara: ,,Keisarans.`` Hann segir: ,,Gjaldið þá keisaranum það, sem keisarans er, og Guði það, sem Guðs er.``

²¹They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

²²Þegar þeir heyrðu þetta, undruðust þeir, og þeir yfirgáfu hann og gengu burt.

²²When they heard it, they marveled, and left him, and went away.

²³Sama dag komu til hans saddúkear, en þeir neita því, að upprisa sé til, og sögðu við hann:

²³On that day Sadducees (those who say that there is no resurrection) came to him. They asked him,

²⁴,,Meistari, Móse segir: ,Deyi maður barnlaus, þá skal bróðir hans ganga að eiga konu bróður síns og vekja honum niðja.`

²⁴saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed for his brother.’

²⁵Hér voru með oss sjö bræður. Sá fyrsti kvæntist og dó. Hann átti engan niðja og eftirlét því bróður sínum konuna.

²⁵Now there were with us seven brothers. The first married and died, and having no seed left his wife to his brother.

²⁶Eins varð um næsta og þriðja og þá alla sjö.

²⁶In the same way, the second also, and the third, to the seventh.

²⁷Síðast allra dó konan.

²⁷After them all, the woman died.

²⁸Kona hvers þeirra sjö verður hún í upprisunni? Allir höfðu þeir átt hana.``

²⁸In the resurrection therefore, whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had her.”

²⁹En Jesús svaraði þeim: ,,Þér villist, því að þér þekkið ekki ritningarnar né mátt Guðs.

²⁹But Jesus answered them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.

³⁰Í upprisunni kvænast menn hvorki né giftast. Þeir eru sem englar á himni.

³⁰ For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like God’s angels in heaven.

³¹En um upprisu dauðra hafið þér ekki lesið það sem Guð segir við yður:

³¹ But concerning the resurrection of the dead, haven’t you read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,

³²,Ég er Guð Abrahams, Guð Ísaks og Guð Jakobs.` Ekki er hann Guð dauðra, heldur lifenda.``

³² ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ Exodus 3:6 God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

³³En mannfjöldinn hlýddi á og undraðist mjög kenningu hans.

³³When the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

³⁴Þegar farísear heyrðu, að hann hafði gjört saddúkea orðlausa, komu þeir saman.

³⁴But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together.

³⁵Og einn þeirra, sem var lögvitringur, vildi freista hans og spurði:

³⁵One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him.

³⁶,,Meistari, hvert er hið æðsta boðorð í lögmálinu?``

³⁶“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”

³⁷Hann svaraði honum: ,,,Elska skalt þú Drottin, Guð þinn, af öllu hjarta þínu, allri sálu þinni og öllum huga þínum.`

³⁷Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ Deuteronomy 6:5

³⁸Þetta er hið æðsta og fremsta boðorð.

³⁸ This is the first and great commandment.

³⁹Annað er þessu líkt: ,Þú skalt elska náunga þinn eins og sjálfan þig.`

³⁹ A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Leviticus 19:18

⁴⁰Á þessum tveimur boðorðum hvílir allt lögmálið og spámennirnir.``

⁴⁰ The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

⁴¹Meðan farísearnir voru saman komnir, spurði Jesús þá:

⁴¹Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,

⁴²,,Hvað virðist yður um Krist? Hvers son er hann?`` Þeir svara: ,,Davíðs.``

⁴²saying, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “Of David.”

⁴³Hann segir: ,,Hvernig getur þá Davíð, innblásinn andanum, kallað hann drottin? Hann segir:

⁴³He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,

⁴⁴Drottinn sagði við minn drottin: Set þig mér til hægri handar, þangað til ég gjöri óvini þína að fótskör þinni.

⁴⁴ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit on my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?’ Psalm 110:1

⁴⁵Fyrst Davíð kallar hann drottin, hvernig getur hann þá verið sonur hans?``Enginn gat svarað honum einu orði, og frá þeim degi þorði enginn að spyrja hann neins framar.

⁴⁵ “If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”

⁴⁶Enginn gat svarað honum einu orði, og frá þeim degi þorði enginn að spyrja hann neins framar.

⁴⁶No one was able to answer him a word, neither did any man dare ask him any more questions from that day forth.
