¹そこで、わたしの子よ。あなたはキリスト・イエスにある恵みによって、強くなりなさい。

¹You therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

²そして、あなたが多くの証人の前でわたしから聞いたことを、さらにほかの者たちにも教えることのできるような忠実な人々に、ゆだねなさい。

²The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

³キリスト・イエスの良い兵卒として、わたしと苦しみを共にしてほしい。

³You therefore must endure hardship, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

⁴兵役に服している者は、日常生活の事に煩わされてはいない。ただ、兵を募った司令官を喜ばせようと努める。

⁴No soldier on duty entangles himself in the affairs of life, that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier.

⁵また、競技をするにしても、規定に従って競技をしなければ、栄冠は得られない。

⁵Also, if anyone competes in athletics, he isn’t crowned unless he has competed by the rules.

⁶労苦をする農夫が、だれよりも先に、生産物の分配にあずかるべきである。

⁶The farmers who labor must be the first to get a share of the crops.

⁷わたしの言うことを、よく考えてみなさい。主は、それを十分に理解する力をあなたに賜わるであろう。

⁷Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.

⁸ダビデの子孫として生れ、死人のうちからよみがえったイエス・キリストを、いつも思っていなさい。これがわたしの福音である。

⁸Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my Good News,

⁹この福音のために、わたしは悪者のように苦しめられ、ついに鎖につながれるに至った。しかし、神の言はつながれてはいない。

⁹in which I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal. But God’s word isn’t chained.

¹⁰それだから、わたしは選ばれた人たちのために、いっさいのことを耐え忍ぶのである。それは、彼らもキリスト・イエスによる救を受け、また、それと共に永遠の栄光を受けるためである。

¹⁰Therefore I endure all things for the chosen ones’ sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

¹¹次の言葉は確実である。「もしわたしたちが、彼と共に死んだなら、また彼と共に生きるであろう。

¹¹This saying is faithful: “For if we died with him, we will also live with him.

¹²もし耐え忍ぶなら、彼と共に支配者となるであろう。もし彼を否むなら、彼もわたしたちを否むであろう。

¹²If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he also will deny us.

¹³たとい、わたしたちは不真実であっても、彼は常に真実である。彼は自分を偽ることが、できないのである」。

¹³If we are faithless, he remains faithful. He can’t deny himself.”

¹⁴あなたは、これらのことを彼らに思い出させて、なんの益もなく、聞いている人々を破滅におとしいれるだけである言葉の争いをしないように、神のみまえでおごそかに命じなさい。

¹⁴Remind them of these things, charging them in the sight of the Lord, that they don’t argue about words, to no profit, to the subverting of those who hear.

¹⁵あなたは真理の言葉を正しく教え、恥じるところのない錬達した働き人になって、神に自分をささげるように努めはげみなさい。

¹⁵Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.

¹⁶俗悪なむだ話を避けなさい。それによって人々は、ますます不信心に落ちていき、

¹⁶But shun empty chatter, for it will go further in ungodliness,

¹⁷彼らの言葉は、がんのように腐れひろがるであろう。その中にはヒメナオとピレトとがいる。

¹⁷and those words will consume like gangrene, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;

¹⁸彼らは真理からはずれ、復活はすでに済んでしまったと言い、そして、ある人々の信仰をくつがえしている。

¹⁸men who have erred concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and overthrowing the faith of some.

¹⁹しかし、神のゆるがない土台はすえられていて、それに次の句が証印として、しるされている。「主は自分の者たちを知る」。また「主の名を呼ぶ者は、すべて不義から離れよ」。

¹⁹However God’s firm foundation stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are his,” Numbers 16:5 and, “Let every one who names the name of the Lord TR reads “Christ” instead of “the Lord” depart from unrighteousness.”

²⁰大きな家には、金や銀の器ばかりではなく、木や土の器もあり、そして、あるものは尊いことに用いられ、あるものは卑しいことに用いられる。

²⁰Now in a large house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of clay. Some are for honor, and some for dishonor.

²¹もし人が卑しいものを取り去って自分をきよめるなら、彼は尊いきよめられた器となって、主人に役立つものとなり、すべての良いわざに間に合うようになる。

²¹If anyone therefore purges himself from these, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, and suitable for the master’s use, prepared for every good work.

²²そこで、あなたは若い時の情欲を避けなさい。そして、きよい心をもって主を呼び求める人々と共に、義と信仰と愛と平和とを追い求めなさい。

²²Flee from youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

²³愚かで無知な論議をやめなさい。それは、あなたが知っているとおり、ただ争いに終るだけである。

²³But refuse foolish and ignorant questionings, knowing that they generate strife.

²⁴主の僕たる者は争ってはならない。だれに対しても親切であって、よく教え、よく忍び、

²⁴The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle towards all, able to teach, patient,

²⁵反対する者を柔和な心で教え導くべきである。おそらく神は、彼らに悔改めの心を与えて、真理を知らせ、一度は悪魔に捕えられてその欲するままになっていても、目ざめて彼のわなからのがれさせて下さるであろう。

²⁵in gentleness correcting those who oppose him: perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth,

²⁶一度は悪魔に捕えられてその欲するままになっていても、目ざめて彼のわなからのがれさせて下さるであろう。

²⁶and they may recover themselves out of the devil’s snare, having been taken captive by him to his will.
