¹パリサイ人のひとりで、その名をニコデモというユダヤ人の指導者があった。

¹Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

²この人が夜イエスのもとにきて言った、「先生、わたしたちはあなたが神からこられた教師であることを知っています。神がご一緒でないなら、あなたがなさっておられるようなしるしは、だれにもできはしません」。

²The same came to him by night, and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”

³イエスは答えて言われた、「よくよくあなたに言っておく。だれでも新しく生れなければ、神の国を見ることはできない」。

³Jesus answered him, “Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, The word translated “anew” here and in John 3:7 (anothen) also means “again” and “from above”. he can’t see the Kingdom of God.”

⁴ニコデモは言った、「人は年をとってから生れることが、どうしてできますか。もう一度、母の胎にはいって生れることができましょうか」。

⁴Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?”

⁵イエスは答えられた、「よくよくあなたに言っておく。だれでも、水と霊とから生れなければ、神の国にはいることはできない。

⁵Jesus answered, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can’t enter into the Kingdom of God!

⁶肉から生れる者は肉であり、霊から生れる者は霊である。

⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

⁷あなたがたは新しく生れなければならないと、わたしが言ったからとて、不思議に思うには及ばない。

⁷ Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’

⁸風は思いのままに吹く。あなたはその音を聞くが、それがどこからきて、どこへ行くかは知らない。霊から生れる者もみな、それと同じである」。

⁸ The wind The same Greek word (pneuma) means wind, breath, and spirit. blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

⁹ニコデモはイエスに答えて言った、「どうして、そんなことがあり得ましょうか」。

⁹Nicodemus answered him, “How can these things be?”

¹⁰イエスは彼に答えて言われた、「あなたはイスラエルの教師でありながら、これぐらいのことがわからないのか。

¹⁰Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things?

¹¹よくよく言っておく。わたしたちは自分の知っていることを語り、また自分の見たことをあかししているのに、あなたがたはわたしたちのあかしを受けいれない。

¹¹ Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know, and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness.

¹²わたしが地上のことを語っているのに、あなたがたが信じないならば、天上のことを語った場合、どうしてそれを信じるだろうか。

¹² If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

¹³天から下ってきた者、すなわち人の子のほかには、だれも天に上った者はない。

¹³ No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.

¹⁴そして、ちょうどモーセが荒野でへびを上げたように、人の子もまた上げられなければならない。

¹⁴ As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

¹⁵それは彼を信じる者が、すべて永遠の命を得るためである」。

¹⁵ that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

¹⁶神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。

¹⁶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

¹⁷神が御子を世につかわされたのは、世をさばくためではなく、御子によって、この世が救われるためである。

¹⁷ For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.

¹⁸彼を信じる者は、さばかれない。信じない者は、すでにさばかれている。神のひとり子の名を信じることをしないからである。

¹⁸ He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.

¹⁹そのさばきというのは、光がこの世にきたのに、人々はそのおこないが悪いために、光よりもやみの方を愛したことである。

¹⁹ This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.

²⁰悪を行っている者はみな光を憎む。そして、そのおこないが明るみに出されるのを恐れて、光にこようとはしない。

²⁰ For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed.

²¹しかし、真理を行っている者は光に来る。その人のおこないの、神にあってなされたということが、明らかにされるためである。

²¹ But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.”

²²こののち、イエスは弟子たちとユダヤの地に行き、彼らと一緒にそこに滞在して、バプテスマを授けておられた。

²²After these things, Jesus came with his disciples into the land of Judea. He stayed there with them, and baptized.

²³ヨハネもサリムに近いアイノンで、バプテスマを授けていた。そこには水がたくさんあったからである。人々がぞくぞくとやってきてバプテスマを受けていた。

²³John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came, and were baptized.

²⁴そのとき、ヨハネはまだ獄に入れられてはいなかった。

²⁴For John was not yet thrown into prison.

²⁵ところが、ヨハネの弟子たちとひとりのユダヤ人との間に、きよめのことで争論が起った。

²⁵There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John’s disciples with some Jews about purification.

²⁶そこで彼らはヨハネのところにきて言った、「先生、ごらん下さい。ヨルダンの向こうであなたと一緒にいたことがあり、そして、あなたがあかしをしておられたあのかたが、バプテスマを授けており、皆の者が、そのかたのところへ出かけています」。

²⁶They came to John, and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, the same baptizes, and everyone is coming to him.”

²⁷ヨハネは答えて言った、「人は天から与えられなければ、何ものも受けることはできない。

²⁷John answered, “A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.

²⁸『わたしはキリストではなく、そのかたよりも先につかわされた者である』と言ったことをあかししてくれるのは、あなたがた自身である。

²⁸You yourselves testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’

²⁹花嫁をもつ者は花婿である。花婿の友人は立って彼の声を聞き、その声を聞いて大いに喜ぶ。こうして、この喜びはわたしに満ち足りている。

²⁹He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. This, my joy, therefore is made full.

³⁰彼は必ず栄え、わたしは衰える。

³⁰He must increase, but I must decrease.

³¹上から来る者は、すべてのものの上にある。地から出る者は、地に属する者であって、地のことを語る。天から来る者は、すべてのものの上にある。

³¹He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

³²彼はその見たところ、聞いたところをあかししているが、だれもそのあかしを受けいれない。

³²What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness.

³³しかし、そのあかしを受けいれる者は、神がまことであることを、たしかに認めたのである。

³³He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true.

³⁴神がおつかわしになったかたは、神の言葉を語る。神は聖霊を限りなく賜うからである。

³⁴For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure.

³⁵父は御子を愛して、万物をその手にお与えになった。御子を信じる者は永遠の命をもつ。御子に従わない者は、命にあずかることがないばかりか、神の怒りがその上にとどまるのである」。

³⁵The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.

³⁶御子を信じる者は永遠の命をもつ。御子に従わない者は、命にあずかることがないばかりか、神の怒りがその上にとどまるのである」。

³⁶One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys The same word can be translated “disobeys” or “disbelieves” in this context. the Son won’t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
