1And Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: —
2Tokony handahatra hevi-dravina va ny olon-kendry, ka hameno ny kibony amin'ny rivotra avy any atsinanana va,
2Doth a wise man answer [with] vain knowledge? And fill [with] an east wind his belly?
3Ary hamaly amin'ny teny tsy mahasoa sy ny teny tsy mahatsara?
3To reason with a word not useful? And speeches — no profit in them?
4Eny, foananao ny fahatahorana an'Andriamanitra, ary tampenanao ny fivavahana eo anatrehany;[Na: hamavoinao]
4Yea, thou dost make reverence void, And dost diminish meditation before God.
5Fa ny helokao no manesika ny vavanao, ary mianatra ny lelan'ny fetsy ianao.[Na: Tsy maneho ny helokao va ny vavanao, Na dia mianatra ny lelan'ny fetsy aza ianao?]
5For thy mouth teacheth thine iniquity, And thou chooseth the tongue of the subtile.
6Ny vavanao ihany no manameloka anao, fa tsy izaho; Ary ny molotrao ihany no mamely anao.
6Thy mouth declareth thee wicked, and not I, And thy lips testify against thee.
7Hianao va no voalohany izay nateraka ho olombelona? Na naloaky ny kibo talohan'ny tendrombohitra va ianao?
7The first man art thou born? And before the heights wast thou formed?
8Isan'ny mpihevitra teo amin'Andriamanitra va ianao, ka voarombakao ho anao irery ny fahendrena?
8Of the secret counsel of God dost thou hear? And withdrawest thou unto thee wisdom?
9Inona no fantatrao, ka tsy mba fantatray koa, na saina azonao, ka tsy ato aminay koa?
9What hast thou known, and we know not? Understandest thou — and it is not with us?
10Ny anti-panahy sy ny fotsy volo dia misy ato aminay, eny, olona ela niainana noho ny rainao aza.
10Both the gray-headed And the very aged [are] among us — Greater than thy father [in] days.
11Ataonao ho tsinontsinona va ny fampiononana avy amin'Andriamanitra sy ny teny natao aminao amin'ny fahalemem-panahy?
11Too few for thee are the comforts of God? And a gentle word [is] with thee,
12Nahoana no dia entin'ny fonao ianao? Ary nahoana no mipipy foana ny masonao,
12What — doth thine heart take thee away? And what — are thine eyes high?
13Ka miefonefona amin'Andriamanitra ianao, sady miteniteny foana ny vavanao?
13For thou turnest against God thy spirit? And hast brought out words from thy mouth:
14Inona ny zanak'olombelona no mba hadio izy? Ary izay tera-behivavy no mba ho marina?
14What [is] man that he is pure, And that he is righteous, one born of woman?
15Indro, ireo anjeliny aza tsy mahatoky Azy, ary ny lanitra aza tsy madio eo imasony;[Heb. masina]
15Lo, in His holy ones He putteth no credence, And the heavens have not been pure in His eyes.
16Koa mainka fa izay vetaveta sy tena ratsy, dia ny olona izay misotro heloka toa rano!
16Also — surely abominable and filthy Is man drinking as water perverseness.
17Hanambara aminao aho, ka mihainoa ahy fa izay efa hitako no holazaiko,
17I shew thee — hearken to me — And this I have seen and declare:
18Dia zavatra notorin'ny olon-kendry, fa tsy nafeniny, dia izay azony avy tamin'ny razany;
18Which the wise declare — And have not hid — from their fathers.
19Ireny ihany no nomena ny tany, ary tsy nisy olona hafa firenena nisisika teo aminy.
19To them alone was the land given, And a stranger passed not over into their midst:
20Ny ratsy fanahy mijalijaly amin'ny androny rehetra, dia amin'ny taona rehetra voatendry ho an'ny lozabe.
20`All days of the wicked he is paining himself, And few years have been laid up for the terrible one.
21Feo mampitahotra no ren'ny sofiny; Ary na dia miadana aza izy, dia avy hamely azy ihany ny mpandroba.
21A fearful voice [is] in his ears, In peace doth a destroyer come to him.
22Tsy manantena ho afaka amin'ny maizina izy; Andrasan'ny sabatra izy.
22He believeth not to return from darkness, And watched [is] he for the sword.
23Mirenireny hitady izay hohaniny izy ka manao hoe: Aiza re? Fantany fa antomotra azy ny andro maizina.
23He is wandering for bread — `Where [is] it?` He hath known that ready at his hand Is a day of darkness.
24Fahoriana sy fahaporitana no mampitahotra azy; Mandresy azy ireo tahaka ny mpanjaka efa vonona ho amin'ny ady,[Na: Alahelo sy ahiahy]
24Terrify him do adversity and distress, They prevail over him As a king ready for a boaster.
25Satria naninjitra ny tanany hanohitra an'Andriamanitra izy Ary nirehareha hanohitra ny Tsitoha.
25For he stretched out against God his hand, And against the Mighty he maketh himself mighty.
26Mimaona amin'ny fahamafian-katoka hamely Azy izy, dia amin'ny foitran'ampingany matevina,
26He runneth unto Him with a neck, With thick bosses of his shields.
27Satria efa matavitavy tarehy izy, ary mivalon-kotraka ny valahany;
27For he hath covered his face with his fat, And maketh vigour over [his] confidence.
28Ary monina ao an-tanana rava izy, dia ao an-trano tokony tsy hitoeran'olona, izay efa voatendry ho korontam-bato.
28And he inhabiteth cities cut off, houses not dwelt in, That have been ready to become heaps.
29Tsy hanan-karena izy, sady tsy haharitra ny heriny, ka tsy ho vokatra ambonin'ny tany ny fananany.[Heb. hilonjehitra amin'ny tany toy ny vary efa vokatra]
29He is not rich, nor doth his wealth rise, Nor doth he stretch out on earth their continuance.
30Tsy ho afaka amin'ny maizina izy; ny solofony hikainkona azon'ny lelafo; ho levon'ny fofonain'Andriamanitra izy.
30He turneth not aside from darkness, His tender branch doth a flame dry up, And he turneth aside at the breath of His mouth!
31Aoka tsy ho voafitaka hatoky zava-poana izy; fa zava-poana no ho valiny homena azy.
31Let him not put credence in vanity, He hath been deceived, For vanity is his recompence.
32Raha mbola tsy tonga aza ny androny, dia manjo azy izany, ary tsy ho maitso ny sampany.
32Not in his day is it completed, And his bending branch is not green.
33Ho tahaka ny voaloboka manintsana ny voany manta izy ary ho tahaka ny hazo oliva mampiraraka ny voniny.
33He shaketh off as a vine his unripe fruit, And casteth off as an olive his blossom.

34For the company of the profane [is] gloomy, And fire hath consumed tents of bribery.
35Torontoronina fampahoriana izy ka miteraka fandozana, ary ny kibony mamorom-pitaka.
35To conceive misery, and to bear iniquity, Even their heart doth prepare deceit.
